If reviewers had 2 weeks to play it they should be able to play only 4 hrs a day and finish all 8 stories

I can play that much per day even with a job and I'm not a reviewer, should be easy

This is just making my somewhat crazy theory more plausible.

The corner shadows/vignette over the screen? That's not just for style. All 8 individual stories are flashbacks being told by each of the characters. Once you beat all the individual stories it flashes forward to the endgame where everyone is actually journeying together.

Now this I wish I hadn't clicked, because it's a cool idea that I'll be annoyed I was "spoiled" for if true, and a little disappointed it didn't end up this way if false, hah.

The adventure complete, the heroes gaze out at the sunset over the kingdom they have saved together.

An old farmer, having witnessed the epic final struggle against the forces of darkness, stands and admires the heroes. He cracks a smile and chuckles.

"In the end, they truly were the Octopath Travelers."

"tell me another story about the Octopath Travelers"

Man this thread is a rollercoaster.

I should stop reading it and find out if the storylines connect when I play the game myself, will be a massive holy crap moment if they do

They're not actually there because they're telling each other the stories of their travels, hence the whole story-swapping mechanic at taverns literally being called "Hear a Tale" and the interaction scenes looking like they're taking place on a theatre stage.

This probably won't actually be the case, but still... something to think about.
Imagine them in the office
  • Employee a "They will be expecting a twist this time, what shall we do?"
  • Employee b, "Lets do this same twist, they will never see it coming".

I wouldn't expect all that much of the final scenario, if there is one. If the condition is that you need to complete all 8 quests, then the real benefit is just tying up loose ends and having a "true" final boss that requires that you've completed most of the game's challenges, and can actually have major scenes that utilize the full cast, because characters are actually required to trigger it and thus aren't considered side characters. I'd guess it is some conflict/crisis and final dungeon, more than some 5-10 hour scenario.

What about the guy who was 50+ hours in, and said he'd seen nothing hinting at interconnection?

Is it at the absolute endgame?
it sounds like there isn't any and some people might just have to be OK with it. It doesn't mean the game or the stories will be bad, it just means they might not interconnect in a large or meaningful way. I guess we'll see. really looking forward to seeing these reviews.. it's gonna be a ride either way.

I just decided to throw caution to the wind and order it. I typically like leisurely, easy turn based RPGs and from some testimonials this one is slightly challenging but I'll give it a try with an open mind. The last JRPG I played was Bravely Default and I liked it and this seems at least comparable.

The developers themselves said the game could take over 100 hours to complete with side quests so 50+ hours can mean that he's not even past the half-mark of the story. Speculations seem to imply that the convergence (if it happens) will come later in the game. We will have to see basically.

Well, he was still at chapter 2 for most characters based on his progress markers. He just took his sweet time playing the game (and not knowing there's quick travel). The twinfinite preview was also at 50 hours too and unless she broke embargo rules, I would guess their progress speeds are similar.

I completely understand the people that want to peace out because the narrative isn't a big interconnected story.

However for me OP feels like D&D. Loose heroes banding together for whatever. I really just want to explore the world and play with the combat.

Can't wait for Friday!!

What's the easiest way to get the game early? Does it release on the Japanese store before Friday etc?

It's not out yet I know this, but how can one of the greatest rpg factories not make a central storyline with a through plot containing all of the characters. I just don't get the point of 8 individual stories. At that point honestly if this is what it is, this should've been episodic over the span of a year, Hitman style. I have it ordered from Amazon but if reviews hit and there's is no central storyline I'll probably be sending this back. I like my RPGs to have character development and relationships. Major factor in why I love xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Ys Viii

always thought reviewers would put all other other work aside when working on a review, but seems like that's not the case?

I mean, people very often aren't just "reviewers". They likely have other writing to do and can't just constantly play the game, especially if they're working on developing stories where they need to stay in contact with sources, etc. Maybe it's the case if you're a freelancer... but then you're also going to be submitting other pitches, doing other writing, etc., right?

It's just Square Enix.

But seriously that's simply not the game they wanted to make, I guess? There's plenty to love in Octopath that's not an unified plot and group chemistry.

We have known about the name "Octopath Traveler" since January of last year. It was quite obvious even back then that the game was going to be about travelling down 8 paths, it's not exactly a massive surprise. You should probably cancel right now then because if there is any coming together of the story it won't happen until the very end of the game.

I know but maybe bigger firms like IGN can afford to lose one staff temporarily for two weeks for a very important release.
Just can't imagine in a two week time limit one need to finish a 80 to 100 hr game, organize his thoughts, write drafts and present a quality 2000-word review, that sounds really overwhelming.

All speculation though.

My apologies if this has been answered already but have been casually following this thread to avoid spoilers... But do we know if there is a way to prevent overleveling for the individual chapters?

My understanding is that the later chapters for the individual characters stories, you will need your characters to be higher leveled. And that characters not in the party don't receive experience. Wouldn't this create issues with the leveling curve if, say, you started with Cyrus, played through his 3rd chapter, and then went back to do Chapter 2 for other characters? Since Cyrus always has to be around, and will now be at a higher level?

I know in Xenoblade games I run into issues where I avoid/miss unique monsters or quests and then come back to them waaaaaay overleveled and feel like I missed out on some of the challenge. If this assumption is true about Octopath Traveler, then wouldn't it incentive you to finish all the Chapter 2s in a row, and swap people in and out regularly? Maybe have 3 different sets of teams to rotate through stories. If they were able to counteract this, then it will be nice to just do chapters at a whim and not worry about it.

I admit, like a lot of people, I have been putting way too much thought into what character I want to start with. I really liked Primrose's playstyle in the demo. I like the idea of Cyrus' story. I really like the idea of the Thief and Merchant skills. In general, I really like that a lot of the base classes are the more quirky classes akin to Final Fantasy ones... Kind of avoiding Olberic because I am tired of main heroes in JRPGs with swords. The prospect of playing through the whole game with a thief, merchant, or scholar is really compelling.

I'm thinking if there is a connected story it unlocks after you beat all chapters for all characters.

Chapters and enemies scale to an extent with your progress. This is observable in the recent demo. Unknown how precisely earlier chapters continue to scale, but the Chapter 1s scale at least enough to ferry the player seamlessly into Chapter 2's level recommendation floor of ~22, and I suspect they would scale higher the more chapters you complete, accounting for the possible decision to defer some people's recruitment to later in the game—though their bosses mechanically probably wouldn't become as complicated as subsequent ones.

That's literally what turning off corner shadows does, though. There are no other shadows on the edge...

This is what I'm referring to:
Corner shadows on

Corner shadows off

In both shots, there's this weird, very intrusive red haze that ruins everything. It's ugly.
But i know I've seen screens of this game without that. In fact, most screens that I see are absolutely gorgeous. They're what prompted me to download the demo after resisting for so long.

It has me bummed out big time.

OK thanks for this, that would be great if they do scale well as you play. The prospect of having to very meticulously play all the Chapter 2s in a row to avoid overleveling would be insanely tedious. The freedom of just latching on and pursuing whichever other stories you want is going to be neat. Whoever the last story you complete, you will probably end up getting the highest leveled enemies, with that logic. Could be cool comparing people's experiences.

It what you are describing is a personal preference, which has nothing to do with Square or the quality. A centralized story is not better nor worse than 8 smaller, separate and more personal stories. Whether in books or any other media.

I have 40 minutes left in the demo and have Therion and Haanit and I can't decide if I should chase down another character, a side story or wait till Friday and maybe even start all over fresh.

This game is so good.

I'd even be happy if nothing comes together at all. Or only wraps up in the end.
