No, it wasn't. That happened because it was suggested by Toriyama. It's why this also happened in the manga.
He obliterates Cell, who got killed by 50% of Gohans strength. I'd say he's a bit below SS3 Buu Saga Goku. The way Broly loses in the movies are complete ass pulls that would never happen in the main continuity and the villain can't win the movies.
Frieza uncovers Broly, starts being racist and then Broly chases Frieza across the universe until they reach earth
Goku Goes to u6 where he gets sick, and because of the needles in hospital he starts to cry, but that was a mistake because Broly was having a bad day in the next Room because he had to eat carrot, that with Goku crying makes Broly Go berseker yelling cacarrot and wants to punch Goku

Agreed. It's part of the character's appeal. Broly's musculature needs to be bursting at the seams.
I mean that from a meta sense, yes. So we went like 20 years of him being a villain( a really horrible villain) to possibly being redeemed? Lame. If anything I personally always loved Cooler and would love to see him folded into the canon.

Actually screw SS4. If we're making Broly cannon for the movie then the only attack that can finish him off is the Dragon Fist

Hell even if is just Goku but imagine that they made canon the best 3 things from the movies.

Broly lost to USSJ Goku with a powerup, and then in his return was basically on par with adult Gohan (who is weaker than teen Gohan), and defeated by Gohan/Trunks/Goten who all would have lost to Dabura. Even if you took the old movies as canon, he's a lightweight compared to SSJ2 Vegeta or Goku, meaning he's probably at or below Cell's level.
