I guess that could be it but the post in the previous page about there being a final boss made me believe it's only accessible after finishing all the stories.

Yeah, we don't know. It could be they meant you could finish the game solo, but incompletely—I mean, obviously that's what they meant to some extent, since a vast portion of the game is other characters' stories.

Hmm other doubt...if i have 8 storys, i will always have to level up everyone again? Or i can stick to one character and try to 100% the world ?

It could just be that you unlock a true final boss once you finish your main character's personal story, leaving it up to the player if they tackle it right away or wait until they finish however many stories they want to do.

Quick question in case this information came out:

Is there any negative at all to stealing unless you fail and get reputation penalty? Like is there any reason at all to not steal everything from everyone?

Hmmm take this "review" with a grain of salt:

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/204212-octopath-traveler/76788054

Did he really did break the embargo for this?
Man, if there's really nothing after beating all eight stories that's gonna be such a let down. Like, couldn't they have at least thrown in a bone of some sort of "true" ending scene if you get and complete everyone?
I want this to be fake so bad and I know there's been mention of some final boss theme that could imply it might be, but given all the preview impressions so far.... it's probably just gonna end up being true. :(

Well I mean....it is GameFaq's after all.
But if true then, yeah I agree with you 100%. It's a little disheartening.

I don't really care about an overarching narrative. So far the art style es beautiful, the OST is stellar, the combat is fun and we will have to see about the writing and pacing next week, but it looks like it shaping up to be an overall great game. People should evaluate something on what it is and how successful is on what's trying to do, not what you wanted or think should be, otherwise you just set yourself for disappointment.

I never really assumed from the beginning that it would have a big overarching narrative, but I had hoped we'd have plenty of inter-party interactions across each of these stories.

I've got this feeling the review score spread is going to be pretty large.

Agreed.
It seems either this game really clicks with you or it doesn't.
Simple as.

Nah, I still think reviews will be generally high across the board. It may not be what some wished for but what's there still seems to be really good according to most previews, even Jason's.

The initial shock of no overarching plot probably won't matter much in the long run to this game and it's legacy.

Just like I'm sure some went into BotW expecting a near dungeon crawler like the most recent Zelda's. Still went down as a GOAT despite a vocal minority trying to discredit the game for not being something it wasn't trying to be.

It just seems as Octopath is trying something different from other RPGs.
I played both demos to death and loved them.
As long as it is more of that with a good ending I'm more than happy!

Looking at this thread I notice that a lot of people want all stories to unite at some point and have a single goal of saving the world defeating the one last boss or something, but honestly I'm tired of the let's save the world cliché story. I understand the bummer of lack of party interactions since I really enjoy that kind of stuff on a RPG, but that's nowhere near a deal-breaker for me, if each story, being silly and lighthearted, tragic, comedic or any kind of direction they want to give them, is adequate written and well paced on it's own terms, thats great ! For instance a lackluster OST would have been a huge con to me, which as each new track I hear is just as good or better than the last one, it's obviously not the case. No game is perfect, even the masterpieces are not immune to critique, and obviously there will never be something that everyone loves, but if I have to let go dialog between party members which I greatly enjoy, for really appealing visuals (At least to me), a killer soundtrack, actually fun combat and hopefully interesting and engaging characters and story, I'm all in.

I just realized as I wrote this that my mains concerns about the game are the same that I had with persona 5 when I finished it, meaning, I hope it doesn't drag for too long and become repetitive, and has a good pacing, which were the two main things a don't like about Persona 5, which is a good game, but those things really soared my final thoughts about it at the 100+ hours mark, when I was really loving it at the 30+ hours.

EDIT: And yes, I do think the reviews will probably be all over the place, and hopefully as I said earlier, reviewers will rate it according to what it is and how well does it, instead of comparing to others RPGs of what should've or they were hoping it to be.

I think people still just need to chill out until reviews hit. And don't take anything as gospel until then.

So, I finally got a chance to sit down and play the demo and while I was pretty interested just because of all the FF6 inspiration (both stated by the devs, and the outright like the sprite design). I've gotten a little over an hour into Ophelia's path and I have to say, this is much better than I dared hope. I'm stupidly excited now and I still have 2 hours of the demo I can play alone.

Better yet, never take any of it as gospel. Take it under consideration, sure, but come to your own conclusions (positive or negative), which may or may not agree with reviews. I don't think the reviewing class has a particular, infallible grasp on what is and isn't a good game.

All the drama surrounding the opinions of journalists is overblown. Sure, they have something to say. Take it as that and nothing more, imo, whether it is what you want to hear or isn't. Don't grasp it tightly, just sort of keep it in mind to help you make purchasing decisions when you're unsure or what-not.

I'm having a hell of a time deciding which character to start with. Getting super obsessive and doubtful about it.

I wonder if the game warns you that you are entering the last battle for a character or something. Is there like 8 different endings?

It's the experience of playing. Those charecters on the YouTube video aren't my charecters I spent the game playing. I don't know what that Geralt did, I don't know if he was the hardass or the Geralt who gave money to the needy. I don't have a connection to that charecter.

Well, if you're following a guide online, it's not really yours either :/

Someone said that their slack channel of reviewers are frothing at the mouth like it is the second coming of a Chrono Trigger story. I think it's going to be extremely high, especially as it is already ingrained in the mind of people that it is the successor of [Insert your favourite SNES JRPG]

So wait 8 characters but 4 hours each story? that kind of blows... and i guess your main character cant be swapped out? I feel like so little story per character with no over arching plot will make little attachment for the characters....do the other characters chime in on other people's story? Or is each individual just voiceless team mates.

Each story isn't 4 hours. They're 4 chapters (at least). Octopath Traveler is said to be 60-100 hours long.

Characters do interact with each other and bond, they simply don't participate in each others' personal story cutscenes, though they do apparently give thoughts on them.

Don't think that GameFAQs post is fake.

How far into the game have you got? How many different boss themes did you hear?

The "Final Boss" theme was leaked on Youtube (or part of it, at least) & it doesn't really sound like a regular Chapter 4 theme to me. I could be mistaken, of course.

.......... I mean, how is that even possible if there's no story overlap? Who's Slack channel?

What does "story overlap" mean? "Overaching story", "overlapping story" or "central story" can all mean different things. They said 8 characters 8 stories, and there's a final boss fight for each, but does a "true boss" count, or are people expecting a scenario that requires all 8 characters?

The game sounds pretty much like it was advertised.

I've been listening to the OST to get hyped for this game. "The Sunlands" is legit one of the best game BGM I've heard in a while.

Any reviewers know if you can fully turn off random encounters via some accessory, or some passive skill from the hidden 4 jobs?

Yup! It's still my favorite track in the game.
