Agreed, Humble Monthly is the best subscription service, because you can keep every game and sell the games you don't like or already have. They are offering many DRM free games as well.

I have both humble monthly and twitch plus now. Humble is a lot more than PS plus and live gold. I didn't know about the twitch plus and free games till recently. That makes me want to keep Amazon prime when I was thinking of cancelling it soon.

Personally the games I've gotten from GWG and PS+ have been much better than the Humble Monthly games.

Not to mention, Humble is twice as expensive on an annual basis.

Pretty odd comparisons. Game bundles are one time purchases for keys, in the case of humble some money also goes to charity. Humble monthly just packages that up into a more convenient factor, but I've only ever bought 1 month of humble monthly because 90% of the time I already own the "big" teased game. I mean you could say having a moviepass card is better than having a humble bundle as well but that wouldn't really make much sense, argument wise.

GWG/PS+ is about access to multiplayer, cloud storage backup, and then some rando games you probably won't play. It sucks you have to pay for online multiplayer access but thats the console world, even Nintendo is getting into it. Do you really think it won't "infect" the PC space sometime in the next 10 years? EA, Activision, and Blizzard I could see moving to a monthly sub model for their new games, EA already slowly starting with their $100 annual Origin access plan that gives you day 1 access to Anthem and Battlefield 5.

Because Sony and Microsoft know a huge amount of people are gonna subscribe to PS+ and XBL Gold anyway just for online multiplayer. Services on PC don't offer that since MP is free there, which means that they need to offer good games to get people to pay for their service, no good offerings = low amount of subscribers. Humble Monthly is also $12 a month, which puts it at $132 a year, that's more than double the price of PS+ and XBL Gold.

You can subscribe lesser period of time for more games with humble monthly. 5 x 1 month of humble monthly cost you the same as a full year PS+, yet gives you about 40 to 45 PC games.

and considering the 5 x 1 month of humble monthly doesn't has to be consecutive, you can choose which month to buy in, allowing you to have partial control on the type of games you want.

This is such an old and ignorant point of view. People are actually pirating current gen consoles as we speak now. Owning a console doesn't make someone holy.
i didnt say it makes them holy, nor did i say there's zero pirating on consoles. there's nothing ignorant about it. piracy on PC's and consoles isnt even comparable. it's simply a thing companies look at when considering business plans on PC that they pretty much ignore on consoles.

1. PS+ and Gold are mostly for the online paywall, the "free" games are there to distract you from the fact that you're paying for online for no reason other than they want you to so they don't have to give you the best games all the time.

2. No competition.

They're better because ps+ and xbox gold are run by companies who control their own platforms and treat people like suckers by making them to pay for (crappy) online, and to be fair millions happily pay it so they did their homework on what they could get away with.

The best part of these PC deals is if you get stuff you don't want you can flip the keys and get a bit of money back if you want to. So if you get a bad month like you routinely get on ps+ and GwG you're not totally screwed.

The primary reason Plus and Gold exists is to charge for multiplayer access. Everything else that comes with it is a strategic way of softening the blow.

If I only have a PS4, there's no point in subscribing to Humble. I would rather just pay for a single service and not worry about competing services, game requirements or whatever else.

Also, PS+ and Xbox Live Gold are not just about the bonus games. It's about convenience. The same reason why I pay for Spotify and not worry about anything else instead of paying for Tidal and Apple Music as well.

I don't actually pay for Spotify. I use Deezer.

Well, the sole reason to subscribe to Humble monthly is for the games. Whereas the biggest reason people subscribe to PS+ and XBLG is to play online. While the subs are similar they're also different in their primary selling point.

Why? Competition. As simple as that. Consoles don't have to compete with other digital stores on their own systems.

Because if their games suck, people won't subscribe, whereas the majority of Plus/Gold subs aren't subbing for anything but to play online.

PS+ has been good for awhile now though, so been pretty happy, even if I got completely fucked over with Xcom 2 (bought literally hours before they announced it was a Plus game).

To people suggesting people don't do this:

I subscribe to PS+ ONLY for the free games and discounts. I don't play MP online at all. Value is incredible, I get way more than $60 of value year after year in games I eventually wanted anyway. Literally takes 2 or 3 games I wanted over the course of a year to break even. I usually get at least 10 gems a year out of the 35 or so annual "freebies" that were on my list, plus several more dollars saved in PSN discounts.

I know this doesn't apply to everyone but I also can't be the only one.

What are those exactly?
The Benefit of paying for something that is free on PC? Yeah I don't know either. Would be nice if Discord or some other service came to Consoles, would force Microsoft's and Sony's hand to have a alternative free service.

What are those exactly?

I'll quote myself from another thread: Of course no one ever responds to this because it's much easier to throw out a hot take.

I have a different view on this and you guys will probably skewer me but I'm ok with that.

  • Microsoft charges what amounts to $5 a month for their online service.
  • They charge the fee for maintaining their online infrastructure which includes things like servers for party chat, global achievements, cloud saves, reputation system, managing cheaters and voice chat abusers, etc.
  • Free to play games are treated the same way as any other games as they are still maintaining the same things architecturally as they do for pay games.
  • The online service gives you 2-3 free titles every month.
PC and Steam are the usual counterarguments to this and I can't really comment on that because my PC gaming days ended before Steam and digital distribution became the norm. In my experience PC gaming online was free but it varied so much title by title that it felt much cheaper by comparison. People didn't really have any skin in the game not to fuck around as there was no reputation system, cheating was a big problem and games like battlefield were server hopping free for all.

I have been on XBL since its inception and I never felt like I got a raw deal.

I'm ready for my filleting now...

I think the difference in Sony's policy right now is that a third party account is cold locked into their ecosystem and that's different to me from putting free to play behind your online service.

Humble Monthly, Origin Access etc. have to provide you good games to make you subscribe. You are allowed to choose to not subscribe to them, which is why they try to tempt you with great deals so you choose to give them your money.

PS+ and Xbox Live Gold are mandatory subscriptions to use all the features of your games - they don't need to provide good games to gain subs.

Don't forget about charity.

Also an updating set of drm free games in trove section. It's like indie version of Xbox game pass except you keep the games forever.

When I was last subscribed to PS+ & Gold, the free games were usually really bad compared to Humble Bundle & Twitch Prime's offerings. Like 2-3 tiers worse.

That's a big factor, but I think people would be much kinder to PS+ & Gold if you got free MP no matter what, and the free games WERE the program. Subscribe for a month if you like the games on offer.

Steam has dedicated servers for Party chat? I thought it was peer to peer?
Oh I don't know, just saying it does have party chat. There's also discord and other 3rd party programs

Plus larger library and twitch prime, humble bundles, monthly bundles, 4packs (which I've never seen on a console) etc.

Digital sales on consoles have been much much improved over the past couple of years. Not as good as on PC, but pretty damn good. As console manufacturers become less and less scared of pissing off retail the sales become better.

What's the point of this thread?
Platform warz

I feel really bad for these people that need to close themselves off to one platform, then tattoo said platform on their chest like some tribal warrior. Eh, maybe they can't afford multiple gaming platforms and are just trying to make themselves feel better via fanboyism. But know you're missing out if you're console only or PC only.

You're right I have noticed them getting better. There's still the issue of some older games and DLC not going on sale nearly ever though.

Obviously most things are better with humble, more games, better games, get to keep them regardless of sub. However...

First, if you pay twice the amount you get better stuff. That should be no surprises.

Second, there is also a pretty big difference in the services - you need to pay before you know what games you get with humble. Granted they show a few games beforehand (usually the "big" ones), but you can not look at the complete package of games and decide if it is worth $12 for you.

You can sell/trade the games you aren't interested in, though (or give them to friends/Era). I even made a profit every now and then while I still bothered selling the games I wasn't interested in.

That's it. Pack it up folks. Completely agree. Its clear these services are designed to cater to different platform business goals and customers.

Playing online, automatic updates, exclusive deals, bonus games, etc. The most convenient thing, however, is knowing that I don't need to worry about other subscription service for the hardware I already own. Just like Spotify, you mindlessly pay for it and trust the company to do their stuff.

Wait... that's every other service though? And for PC you don't need to subscribe to a single thing to play games or play online
