but what exactly do these apps give you that you are not already getting if you already are using a cable TV provider?...you still need to have a cable sub to activate most of these apps right?...or you need to pay for a subscription service like Netflix...I mean it's not like these apps are free on the ATV/Chromecast etc

Catalogues of back episodes that you can't get via the on demand service. Like through the Disney app or Nick app or others. New apps are released or updated all the time.

I have a B7 which, from what I understand, is the same TV you've got apart from the stand. I also looked into Apple 4K a while back but concluded that, for me, it doesn't offer anything substantial. LG's built-in apps are solid. The only reason to get an Apple 4K is if you're using iTunes or have video files of your own you want to seamlessly integrate, which I don't. The Apple interface is better, sure - but it's not $199 dollars worth of better.

EDIT: I think this is because of LG, though. My parents bought a Grundig a year before me and that thing feels 10 years older than it is in terms of interface. Youtube doesn't work because an update broke it. Menus are so slow that I keep thinking the remote must be dying. It's missing tons of apps, with no indication it will ever get any. For that TV, Apple 4K would be a godsend.

Higher quality on my experience. If you watch local TV on your cable sub and then buy the same episode through a service and watch it, you'll notice the one you bought looks a lot better.

TV HD is like watching something off YouTube at a lower quality while buying it from vudu or your favorite service is like buying the blu ray.

that alone sounds like a great reason for me to use an Apple box...image quality is really important to me (hence the reason I bought an OLED to begin with)
On the previous site, I made a few threads on the image quality of certain movies. For example, iTunes was the only service at the time that an HD transfer of HACKERS. A really great transfer as well.

I'd get a shield TV before an Apple TV

It has tons of apps, you can sideload stuff if you really want to, and you can stream your PC games to it in 4K

Most of the time we just use the TVs built in Samsung apps for YouTube and Netflix though

The fact Smart TVs are well know to have little respect for user privacy I have avoided connecting mine to the Internet and use an Apple TV 4K instead.

DirectTV Now is currently having a promotion where you can get a free Apple TV 4K (32GB) when signing up for the service and pre-paying for 3 months...so if you sign up for the lowest programming tier at $35/month it comes out to $105...so you're saving around $70 on the ATV by doing this...I was thinking about doing this but then started to think if it was actually worth it
I did this exact promotion, and got my Apple TV in the mail last week. Highly recommended.

you can actually sign up for the DirectTV Now service at your local AT&T store and get the Apple TV on the spot (if they have it in stock...just call ahead to see which stores have it in stock)

Does it work as an Alexa? I have an Alexa but was wondering if that being in the same room would conflict.

Yep, it's basically an echo + Fire tv with ir blasters to control all your shit. You then set up all your shit. So I can say switch to PlayStation and it changes all the inputs to your ps4. You still gotta turn that one on since it doesn't have ir controls. It's neato

I have a cheap 4K TV cost $500 for a Samsung 58inch, features are limited, only 2 HDMI ports lol, options are barebones AF, TV is replacing a 10 year LG 47inch TV, cost $2000, that TV had so many damn options, the cheap 4K has 1 user settings, the old TV had 4, i was able to control everything on that TV down to the black levels...

For me, everything I watch on my TV runs through my ATV4k.

  • PSvue for regular television watching
  • Infuse to stream my own movie collection from an external hard drive
  • Netflix
  • YouTube
  • iTunes movies/tv shows if I ever want to rent something

If I just used the apps on my Samsung 4k tv, I'd only be able to access crap versions of YT and Netflix.

Aren't you getting a crap version of YouTube on your Apple TV also? They can't do YouTube in 4k.

iTunes often has $5 UHD digital sales that can only be watched on the ATV 4K. The picture quality is close to disc quality, audio is not.

How does it work with a receiver? Does it select the right channel on the receiver and everything?

Why bother with smart TV / apps on TV when you can just hook your PC up via a magnitude of options?

Getting 4k movies on PC is a complete hassle, especially if you want HDR support. Youtube on PC doesn't have HDR support, same with Netflix and a bunch of other services as well. They want you to watch it through an app that they have more control of.

I just bought my first 4K TV that I'll be picking up Wednesday. I've had an Apple TV 4K for a few months. I plan to keep using it because I like the interface and the ability to play music from my iTunes through my sound bar if need be. Even simple things like it's high quality screensavers are a nice added touch.

I also plan to buy the occasional 4K movie through iTunes. It's by no means a necessary device, but given the horror stories I've heard about smart TVs, the idea of a dedicated box sounds better to me.

I wouldn't call it a crap version. It's a current build, you just can't do 4K playback.

You're right, that is too strong. I do wish it had 4k for YouTube though, that's the only thing keeping me from buying one . It seems like every streaming solution has at least one drawback.

Apple TV gets top tier support for years and years. Smart TVs don't, they get some support for the first year or two.

Apple TV apps are well built and many in numbers, with all the big names. Smart TV apps are often hit and miss, few and far between.

Apple TV remembers your apps, settings and home screen when you get a new one, Smart TVs don't.

Apple TV content works seamlessly with multiple units, iPads, iPhones, not just one screen like on Smart TVs.

And while the last point only matters to some people, it matters a lot to them.

Apple TV has integration with iTunes shows and films, Apple Music, Airplay from MacBooks, iPads, iPhones. It works with HomePod too.

With BBC, iTV, Criterion, Crunchyroll, CNN, ESPN and all the other great apps, Apple TV is on its way to lowkey replace set top boxes and Smart TVs. I haven't been connected to aerials or satellite for years anymore.

In general the apps on dedicate platforms will run much better and have more features

Also a good chance the apps on AppleTV aren't tracking you as heavily as your Smart TV apps https://www.nytimes.com/2018/07/05/business/media/tv-viewer-tracking.html

were you comparing the iTunes quality with Blu-ray?
Yes. My good friend and I tested a lot of films and some you cannot tell the difference unless you get really close. And others were on par. I'll start a thread again and do comparisons. And with some films coming with digital passes is easier. Audio is the one that takes the hit. Is good and but of course nowhere near the quality of Blu-Ray.

I used to think Smart TV apps we're bad, would always use the PS4 Netflix app, or a Chromecast. But since I got a Vizio M series, which does have a built in 4k chromecast, I've just used the built in Netlfix / Amazon Video apps.

I've seen the smartcast input of the TV be updated every so often so I assume the apps are getting updates.

Would still love a box that would let you customize the interface to see only the apps you're subscribsu to.

Personally I want my tv to just be a display. Everything else is done through whatever box( chrome cast/ roku/ atv/ pc/ console/audio system)

TVs should stick to being TVs

I use to think this way till I got my Sony 4k with Android TV. The UI is super shiity especially with responsiveness. I am still using the old apple tv and even that feels a couple of generations ahead.

I am now on the lookout for a good 4k external system. Not apple tv 4k (because of that scaling issue) but something else.

Wait, do 4k Smart TVs really not have an optical / stereo out? No way.

Doubt it is all 4k smart TVs. Mine does have optical out.

While built-in TV apps always seems to sluggish, the important thing for me is they work once I start playing back media. I mean, my w900a has one of the slowest interfaces I've ever seen but at least, youtube netflix and amazon video apps still work on it and that's like a 5 year old TV now.

Also, I get 5.1 out just fine with my main TVs media apps

I've always found built in apps to be clunky and slow. I've also heard some occasional horror stories about TV firmware updates so I'd prefer to just not have my TV connected to WiFI at all. The Apple TV is just super convenient, has a great UI (aside from the shitty remote), and also allows access to the Apple iTunes ecosystem that I'm already invested in.

If you are already invested in the Apple eco than it makes perfect sense.

I've never used the built in TV apps. Slow and clucky.

I have a Chromecast built into my Sony Smart TV. It's ok but can feel a bit clunky sometimes. I have thought about purchasing a (insert name) stick\box but unsure if there's going to be that big of a difference. Netflix 4k\Amazon 4k looks pretty decent on it.

The soc in your TV is shit. The support in your TV is, or will be within two years, utter shit. Normal people have a TV for a decade or more before they replace it.

The Apple TV gets regular updates on both the firmware side, features (like Dolby Atmos) will be added, and most importantly the streaming apps will be regularly updated and new streaming services will be added through the app store as they arise.

In two to four years, when the TV is no longer supported and updated, you will not replace it. When the Apple TV is no longer supported, you can replace it for a relative low amount.

So yes, the Apple TV is better. No it will not stream in better HDR, but it is better in every way that matters. Whether that is worth the 200 to you or not, is up to you.

It seems like the SOC or software in tvs has gotten better. In my Samsung, which is 4 years old, the software is janky. But it was nice when I tried it on my friends LG OLED.

I still prefer a roku or Apple TV but it does seem like the quality of tv apps seems to have gotten better.

Airplay hasn't been mentioned enough in this thread. Airplay is amazing, especially now that airplay 2 is out. I bought a HomePod in my kitchen and AppleTV in my living room with that sound system and the Apple TV in the bedroom just with TV speaker is a pretty nice whole home audio solution when I am cooking or cleaning.

Not really that much tbh. Yes, of course soc's get better every year, but not to any significant extent. They are still slow and cheap chips that don't come close to the Apple TV or the Shield TV for instance.

Again, you can get by perfectly fine with a new, still supported, TV and be fine for a few years. After that, you would still need to be looking at a media box either way.

I have a home theater 5.1 system...I use a Toslink optical cable as I don't yet have a 4K receiver and am still using my older Denon...I do get 5.1 audio using Netflix, Amazon, Vudu etc by switching my input to TV on my receiver...I can also get the fake-Atmos audio by using the TV's built-in speakers (which I never use)

Ah, I see.

My HDTV doesn't output native surround sound audio. But my HDTV is also 3yrs old now. The apps are slow....at least slower than my Apple TV.

I guess for me, I'm in the Apple ecosystem. I buy all my movies now via iTunes and I subscribe to Apple Music. So using my Apple TV works for me.

iTunes has a massive library of 4K HDR films that can often be bought for incredible prices. And free upgrades to any applicable movies you already own is a massive benefit too.

On top of that, the quality is also generally very good.
