Wolfwood's death in Trigun depressed the fuck out of 14-year-old-me. The fact that he and Milly liked each other made it all the more painful.

Glad someone beat me to this one.

The deaths in JoJo are always sad. They happen so quick and when they die, they die. Nothing is drawn out.

The "death" in A Place Further Than the Universe absolutely destroyed me. I was a mess.

I thought this was going to be a thread about Wolfwood from Trigun. T_T

Other ones that were very emotional:
-Brandon from Gungrave

-Ace and Whitebeard from One Piece. I actually stopped watching one piece after this because it was so depression.

Gai Daigoji in Nadesico.

That was early on, but never got over that shit. Dude was pure, was a terrible loss for the crew Akito was lost for a while afterwards.

Guy in Nadesico.
Nuriko in Fushigi Yuugi.
Roy in Robotech.

Oh yeah. Spoilers. Also tells my age.

Each of those three, even guys deaths were meaningful to the ahow and to me.

Hell yeah, some else knows what's up. Gai's death felt so pointless at first, but Akito eventually grew from it.

Nuriko is a great one too. Never watched much Robotech.

I was friends with Brett Weaver, Gai's english Voice actor many years ago from Anime conventions. Awesome guy.

Yes to the FMA '03 early series deaths. Both of those hit me like a ton of bricks.

I wish FMA Brotherhood could be fused into the series seemlessly after the first 15-20 episodes because the second half of FMA '03 feels like hollow fanfic.

Brotherhood caught me off guard at the end with
Greed's sacrifice. I was sobbing. I don't know why. I cry every time I rewatch it. Especially the scene when he watches everyone cheering on Ed and has that self-revelation.

Also damn you people for the unmarked HxH spoilers. I'm still going through Greed Island. Not cool.

I don't why anybody is mentioning stuff from DBZ. Death means nothing in that series.

Lots of good classic ones posted already, this one surprised and shocked me recently:

A couple of years ago I watched Claymore with a friend who had already seen it. Teresa was introduced and I kept thinking "she is so awesome can't wait to see her kick ass in the rest of the series"

Clannad:

Particularly in the way the aftermath is handled. The best of Clannad/Clannad: Afterstory really doesn't emerge until after this exact point... that's when its heart-wrenching treatise on familyhood and connectivity genuinely begins.

Honestly, I wasn't a huge fan of Clannad, yet this managed to stab me in the gut anyway. The death and its aftermath was really, really well-executed.

Pretty much the entirety of the ending to Ideon Be-Invoked.
Nobody made it out alive (at all). The entire known universe got nuked and everyone became naked ghosts that no longer fed bloodlust or fear or hatred for each other. Then an unborn baby flies out of its mother's womb and leads them all to a new planet much like Earth, essentially to start over.

If you mean in a less poorly worded "character assassination" rather than character death,I don't know if Videl really fits the bill. Everyone likes her, sure, but it was an otherwise natural progression for a series built on power creep and humans literally never being able to keep up with the Saiyans and other aliens species. That and a time jump in Super ensured there was no way she was staying the way she was. My only regret was that there should have been a Great Saiyaman series spinoff instead of making it a part of the final full story arc, because there was tons of untapped potential in there.

Fuma at the end of X/1999 (The Movie)
(Even more so because of the use of X-Japan's Forever Love)

Lol, OP got me scared since I don't watch Super and Videl is one of my favorite DB characters. I had to wikipedia that.

Yeah, Toriyama fucked up for sure. She should have become Krilin-tier and get her own Tien vs Cell moment.
I've said it before but I would pay good money for a show centered on her and Gohan in high school. Those early Buu saga episodes aren't enough, I need more.

and now i'm crying.

Also devilman crybaby got me, didn't cry, was simply shocked, it was so well done, i knew it was gonna happen because i read the manga, the manga death didn't shock me or anything, and yet crybaby left me feeling a void in my chest

Devilman Crybaby made me just feel empty at the end. I didn't feel anything, it was like all my feelings were removed and my heart became a vacuum for that 10 minutes. I fel t terrible.
