Wings designs are the beginning of the ruinning of Gundam designs. Over designed. Waaay too over designed. But by themselves they're okay.

Chars counterattack was the peak. The Nu and the Sazabi are sexy. Jegans look pretty good. I even like the ReGz. On Zeons side, the Geara Doga. I'm not too found of the Psycho Doga, but it's largely inoffensive. With regards to the ships, I ducking love the Ra Cailum

I disagree. I think Wing had a lot right. It gave each suit a personality. While the Wing was still the standard white with blue, red, and a little gold, it still has personality with the wings, buster rifles, and later jet mode. But the others... Deathscythe, Heavy Arms, Talgeuese, Epyon they all were pretty unique and easy to identify. But outside of them, I can barely tell the difference between the Barbatos, Burning, or 00 at a glance. They all look like variations if the same design with that color scheme. I know it is iconic, but if we get a movie, I want variety in my giant fighting robots.

As weird is it may sound, I want it to be like Pacific Rim in there being multiple, distinct machines that look bad ass.

I go drinking yesterday and wake up to this. Can't be worse than G Savior.

edit: Everything about that promotional video screams Universal Century. It's Sunrise's Golden Child property in regards to Gundam, I can't imagine them doing anything else.

Right? They can really do anything they want with that too. It's horny teens in space! Everything a modern audience wants.

I mean Amuro does get all hot and Sanji eyed over pretty much any woman older then him in the series.

People in this thread have fucking shit taste. Char is dead so fuck the OG Gundam. Go and pick 08th MS Team, it is grounded, not many space fights (only one tbp) and change the final boss. Done, bring me the paycheck.

Am I the only person who never had a problem with most newtype stuff? Yeah it got a bit crazy with the spirits/ghosts things, but the basic idea of heightened senses/premonition from living in space always seemed cool, and like a good motivation for why people should leave Earth, if only for humanity to all develop this and get along better. I felt it was sufficiently different enough from other anime "powers". It was only really in ZZ and maybe the end of Unicorn where it got crazy

The Newtype stuff has never bothered me. I mean, Tomino is a crazy old Space Wizard himself.

You can tell the poster that only watched Wing really....

No kidding. Wing sets up this almost Shonen-style cast of hero robots visually defined around their one or two gimmicks, two really cool villain units, and then makes basically nothing out of the mooks. I'm not a fan of the sameyness of the Gundams (which all look like different accessories and color schemes slapped on the F91) and how throwaway the grunt designs are. The Tallgeese is almost the only real standout amazing design out of the lot, if you ask me.

So another important question: who should compose the score?

I'm half expecting them to jam some of Sawano into this thing given it's a co-production

See, here's the problem I had with it - they never really explained how or why everyone bought into this belief that Newtypes were something special outside of the folks using it for practical applications (building better combat units) and the guys who were just using it for propaganda purposes. It certainly didn't explain why the fuck they thought everyone should live in space, and definitely didn't explain why the fuck the Spacenoids don't wise up and crack down on Zeon remnants on their own.

I know it's likely to be based on Tomino's weird "overpopulation's killing the Earth" stuff, but it's not incorporated into the story universe in a way that makes sense, which makes UC humans look like massive idiots spouting weird ass new age bullshit on many occasions.

Ideon is pretty insane near the end. I don't think I'd ever want to watch it again, though.

I remember my grandma went to Japan in the 80s and brought me back a bunch of round cardboard card things for kids, and one of them has the Ideon and most of the main cast on it. So crazy.

There is no reason to believe this isn't UC, specially with how much Sunrise will be pushing UC in upcoming years.

I think a lot of people in the West don't get how big UC is in Japan in general. They've built two 1:1 UC mobile suits outside a shopping mall. There are cafes themed primarily around UC. Aspects of it are in normal popular culture.

It would be like if there were some crazy ass alternate universe Star Wars spinoffs that were going to be made instead of the classic main line continuity that people love.

So the ANN story confirmed it's the year UC 104 right?

There's a thousand ways they can fuck this up because Pacific Rim is about the only baseline for giant robots Hollywood has, where the tone of UC Gundam is very different. It probably needs to land somewhere between Rogue One and JJ Trek visually. A lot will depend on the main characters. Typical UC MCs pretty much make this feel like a YA movie.

Isn't the simplest answer here, what is the most popular Gundam series? And I don't mean by purists

Universal Century sells a shit load of merchandise, has Pachislot games, shows up in commercials for all kinds of random shit, and there are even credit cards with Char's Zaku and the RX-78 on them. People in Japan are familiar with Char and the original Gundam in the same way that Americans are casually familiar with Spock and Darth Vader. None of the AUs have ever established a foothold like that in non-Otaku popular culture.

I'm expecting the mobile suits to move like Pacific Rim and be clunky as all fuck

The problem isn't that western people don't get how big UC is in Japan.

The problem is that Japan doesn't get that the west doesn't necessarily care for or about UC.

I don't think Sunrise really cares and I get the impression they're unwilling to change.

I also don't think the people in the west with fond memories of Wing and G are enough to make a western movie successful.
