I got the impression fallen order would be a spiritual successor, but they'll probably manage to mess something up.
I think it's going to be multiplayer focused with a bolted on campaign unfortunately.

Not possible with Disney having killed all of the expanded universe.
It's possible for them to reboot it within the new universe, but they won't.

I also hate that idea. But a starving man will eat anything he can get his hands on.

Please don't....

Jedi Outcast is pretty much the GOAT "Jedi" game - and a game i regularly revisit.

I'm terrified of what they might do to the franchise.

We're inevitably getting ourselves some Star Wars CoD clone action but no way in hell is EA going to make an honest homage to the Dark Forces / Jedi Knight series. I'm just happy that it's been long enough now that I can replay the entire series and it'll feel like a fresh experience again. I'm totally okay with replaying these games, playing them online with mods and just accepting the new Star Wars FPS for what it'll be.

My expectations are low but it hopefully it'll have some redeeming qualities even if it's just a cinematic corridor shooter. I am totally indifferent to what Disney has done to Star Wars and EA's handling of the license mirrors what Disney's doing right now just in a different way.

Why do people always refer to Lucasfilm decisions as Disney but never do the same for Marvel?
Yea it's a bit weird.

Are we though? I probably said the same back in 2013 but they have had the license for 5 years and are doing fuck all with it. I'm curious whether this is somehow violating the terms of the agreement. It's entirely realistic that by the start of 2020 they will have had the license for 7 years and only released 3 Battlefront games with 10 hours of campaign content between them.

EA are fucking this up.

To put it lightly. It gives me the same perceptions of disrespect that Colonial Marines gave me in regards to big licenses.

It has to happen sooner or later right? They say Respawn are working on their jedi game and I've liked what Respawn came up with before getting grabbed by EA. EA have tried to mimic the CoD formula repeatedly over the last few years and in terms of mass selling a Star Wars game they are bound to try again now, now they have Respawn.

It does seem absolutely ridiculous that having acquired the Star Wars license, divisions like Bioware are pooling their resources into brand new IPs like Anthem when that very same concept could have the Star Wars branding on it. The Star Wars name would convert many Anthem/Bioware skeptics literally solely because it's a Star Wars product. That's myself included, I'm not really interested in another Destiny style game at the moment... but make it a Star Wars MMOFPS and all of a sudden it's a damn site more appealing to me.

I was kinda hoping that Respawn's game was a Dark Forces reboot. Alas..
Tbf it's be known since it was announced a couple of years that it was a lightsaber combat game

Nothing about this makes any sense. EA bought the rights but, because they close so many studios, they didn't actually have enough devs to make the content. I'm surprised Lucasfilm just took the easy money as well, I would have thought they would be more controlling of the brand in such a widespread medium.

I don't want EA to touch anything SW related at all much less remake a classic.

TBH I'd rather EA stay far away from Dark Forces/Jedi Knight. I would love a reboot but I just can't think of a fitting publisher and developer since Disney killed LucasArts development in 2013.

Dark Forces 2 is one of my all time favorite games, and I would love nothing more than another take on the Kyle Katarn story. For what it's worth, I think there is better chance that Respawn's or EA Vancouver's game is in the Jedi Knight vein than we ever get a "KOTOR 3".

We're never getting Kotor 3. The best we could hope for is a spiritual successor and it would probably be an MMO lite. EA aren't interested in making single player focused SW games and Bioware are clearly not interested in making another Kotor.

As far as I'm concerned they are holding this license hostage. If Lucasfilm had done what Marvel is doing we could have some of the best devs in the world making SW games. And lets be honest, most of them would jump at the chance.

It seems like great Star Wars games died with LucasArts. I don't have high hopes for anything moving forward.

I didn't know about EA Vancouver's project... my interest is piqued. Their last game was Medal of Honor: Heroes 2 for Wii.

Dark Forces! <3
I still love to play the first game! Great level design, great audio, fun to play... really a great game!
The sequel was also surprising, and outcast had a super fun way to fight with lightsabers.

I don't know if we will see a reboot of these... third person is more appealing with Jedi for sure... they should make a new FPS like the first game, but the risk to not have lightsabers in the game... (or have a first person lightsaber fights... why not? if they can manage to make it decent)

Jyn Erso and Cassian Andor are essentially Jan Orso and Kyle Katarn expies, so I doubt they bring those characters back as canon.

From EA's communication regarding Visceral's closure:
"A development team from across EA Worldwide Studios will take over development of this game, led by a team from EA Vancouver that has already been working on the project," Söderlund said.

Their last game was Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare 2: https://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/plants-vs-zombies-gw2/credits

I can assure you that many people at Bioware would like to make a "Kotor 3". While I doubt that will happen, I hope they get the chance to make something in the Star Wars universe in the future.

It would make so much sense to do it and it could be awesome but we're talking about EA here. So nope. I hate to be the one hating on a game company but God EA makes it so easy these days.

Control trailer makes me kinda wonder how Remedy would deal with a Jedi Knight game if the franchise wasn't bound to EA. The telekinesis powers look cool in that one, so that's one part of it already looking decent.

It's just so goddamn unbelievable. All they have to do is take a good look at how well Witcher 3 sold and I'm sure they can see that a actual Star Wars RPG could sell like hotcakes. I don't understand what the fuck EA is doing honestly.

People would go bat shit crazy from a KOTOR 3 reveal. A true Star Wars RPG after all of these years. But it's just so unlikely at this point.

Battlefront was huge on the PS2 era and was very, very popular.

Dark Forces/Jedi Knight isn't nearly as well known or as well loved.

Why not ? like i said before there are many legends character that become canon.
Hell,Hera and Kanan from Rebels lool like Jan,Kyle 2.0 too and they still made Jyn and Cassian

The best reveal we can hope for down the road is going to be Disney/Lucasfilm cutting EA out and reforming or forming a LucasArts style studio. Even then the recent handling of Star Wars is going to prevent everyone getting excited about it.

Sod it I'm going home tonight and starting a replay of the entire DF/JK series.

I don't think Lucasfilm really cares about making non-cash grab games. I hope this isn't the case but during the prequel trilogy we got two Kotor games and a handful great of other experiences. During the Sequel Trilogy, one tech demo with a season pass that cost almost the amount of the game at launch, a game that is now having some countries look at loot boxes as gambling, another game that went off the rails and killed a studio, a mobile cash grab, and a game we only know the premise of.

Not as long as EA has the exclusive rights to the license. Ain't no way to easily monetize and servicify those style of games. Why do you think the only Star Wars games we've gotten in 5 years have been Battlefront games? You think that's just a coincidence?

What are you talking about? Multiplayer was a huge part of Outcast/Academy's appeal. You could easily monetize the hell out of a new Jedi Knight game. Characters, character costumes, lightsaber hilts, lightsaber colors, lightsaber hums, lightsaber ignition sequences, blaster skins... all just to start with.

Edit: I'll add a few more: lightsaber flourishes, blaster bolt colors, force power particle effects, saber wall damage decals...

Speaking of this series. A long time ago I downloaded Darkforces on PS3 but I've never been able to play it. I can't get the game to go past the main menu screen.

Is this a known issue?

I've heard a lot about the game and wish I could play it.

Fallen Order seems like it's going to be a spiritual successor. You're gonna get a Jedi who most likely uses guns as well given Respawns background in shooters.

It SHOULD be glorious.

Best bet, replay Dark Forces 1 and 2. The second is my favorite along with Mysteries of the Sith with Mara Jade. I love the time of live acting in vidya games.

Other than that I can live without there being a new one to the series, but I wouldn't be against a studio giving a go at it.
