Totally disagree, I think it's quite mediocre so far other than a few collections you point out that could be found on other systems. In fact, it's less of a retro gamers paradise than any other Nintendo system or handheld in recent times. The n3DS for instance has a wide virtual console library of SNES games. A modded system can play a massive amount of retro titles. Same for the original DS. The Vita does a great job too, with every software version now being quite simple to modify to play nearly every title you could think of up to the PS1 era. In addition, the Joy-con are really poor for classic gaming with their unfortunate buttons and lack of proper D-pad.

Nope I really mean psp. I love it. Just the right size and placement.
Vita has a good dpad but the joystick comes in the way. I was seriously considering removing it. When I am using the vita dpad my finger keeps getting stuck on the stick.
I know what you mean about the stick getting in the way, but I've found it's not too bad. I prefer the Vita 2000's D-pad as opposed to the OG OLED model. Find it easier to use.

The thing I miss about Virtual Console is the consistency - same price point, same method, easy and clear. On Switch we have some compilations, some individual releases, some series of individual games... it's all scattershot.

But it's absolutely great to see, particularly all the arcade ports I'd never been able to play. And old school RPGs - Phantasy Star and Crystalis for sure.

it´s not only small it feels not good and its imprecise. try half circle motions and stuff in SNK fighting games, it´s disgustingly bad. Or precise platforming like Celeste, it´s just bad, often you push a direction and the character does something different

Never had that problem playing platformers on Switch and it's one of my favorite genres(if not my favorite). I always see the thing of Switch lacking a D-Pad as hyperbolic because while the Pro Controller one isn't the greatest, yes, but it works as intended. And using two Joy-Cons isn't as good as previous D-Pads on older Nintendo consoles, also true, to me it's the same story as with the Pro Controller, although I admit that I prefer the Pro Controller.

Fingers crossed that it's not long before we start getting SNES, N64 and Game Boy family games.

Not sure I can agree with this. The D-pad on joycons and pro controller is substandard, and there is essentially no virtual console, with it being unclear if such a thing is coming or how Nintendo's subscription service will work. Otherwise the selection of games posted are mostly available elsewhere or have not made it outside of Japan.

It's too bad because it would be great for playing the classics on a handheld.

I wish there was a way for Konami to release their beat 'em ups on the Switch. I would imagine that they would run into a licensing nightmare.

I agree but I have 2 problems:

#1: All these collections make finding a certain game a nightmare. I just want a single list with all games listed. Now I have to remember what collection app has what plus I have to drill through those menus to get where I'm going.
#2: We have no assurances that these purchases will go with us to the next bNintendo platform.

Thus, PC/Steam/emulation remains the best retro paradise.

Well, the NES app on Switch turned out fantastic. The Switch's "retro" future is starting to look pretty terrific I'd say. I'm excited.

Fortunately, I never had the desire to play 10-15-20 year old games, especially the ones I played when they released. For me, it's a sign of being stuck in the past.

I only enjoy media that hasn't even been released yet, which is why my consumption is limited to trailers and previews. Get with the times or time will get you.

I'm going to throw a big NOPE out there since we don't have a dpad to play with right now. Vita is still my go to old school machine and I have had a switch since launch.

I wonder what your thoughts are about the Wii's virtual console if you already call Switch's a paradise.

the only way a console can be called a retro paradise is when homebrewed for emulation

Read the OP.

Lapsed gamers and "old" gamers are a primary target for Switch.
Switch appeal to let busy people (work, family duty) to play more thanks to the modular concept have by optimizing when and how you can access to games have a primary audience in them.

It's not a coincidence that at the console unveiling in January 2017 games like Street Fighter collection, a new Bomberman (which was a dead series by that point) and a "SNES-like looking" RPG like Octopath Traveler were presented.

And I LOVE it.

It's quickly getting an extremely wide library of old, not so old, new enough and new games.

It's crazy because the more games come, the more I want ha ha.
