Important to note for our American posters that in the UK Lord Mayor is not the same as Mayor of like New York or even Mayor of London

Mayor of London for example is a political role with quite a large body of powers related to the Greater London Area
The Lord Mayor of London is a purely apolitical ceremonial role and I believe it is the same in Sheffield (though I would of course be 100% thrilled to be wrong on this occasion)

Now having said that this is still hilarious and exactly what more people in the UK should be doing, ceremonial roles or not.

It's not quite as clear cut as there are a couple of Lord Mayors I believe with the same powers of the modern notion of a Mayor (York I think?) but for the most part yeah Lord Mayor is a ceremonial role.

But really it doesn't matter because it is still a person in a respected UK role having the courage to stand up and publicly clown on Trump for being a vile person.

i'm loving seeing him in the position, but I think he has to dress the part and not do the daft "sitting on table" schtick. The stiff shirts will try and get rid of him, and I feel like if he "played the game" a bit more rather than trying to appear to be changing things up, he would be "tolerated" by people a lot more. I want to see him as mayor for a while, because he's a smart guy with good ideas. I'd hate to see him viewed as a bit of a joker.

I mean, Sheffield and nearby areas might. Lets not kid ourselves, I bet a lot of Yorkshire would vote a trump in as an mp.

(Sheffield being the main city of south Yorkshire)

Now I see why it's called the People's Republic of South Yorkshire

The photo in the OP is his official mayoral photo.

Yes.

The position is mostly ceremonial (Magid is on Sheffield council and was voted Lord Mayor by his fellow council members) but he's undertaken the task of trying to remove a lot of the archaicness that comes with the position.

Yup, while he's getting bare tweets on the socials, there's no way he has the legal power to ban Trump.

Which's unfortunate, like m'blud.

Love it! One small correction, wasteman isn't really UK slang, it's Caribbean slang. It's used a lot in Toronto, parts of NY, and a little in Miami as well, basically where ever there's a large Caribbean presence.

I just want to quote this and officially thank the Caribbeans for all the quality slang over the years.
