Indie Weekly is here:

7. Dawn of the Celestialpod
Reminiscent of Octodad or a Bennett Foddy creation, Dawn of the Celestialpod makes a challenge out of movement – something that gamers take for granted... It's a bold and surprising game and that made up for my frustrations in my playtime.
6. Brotherhood United
Inspired by Metal Slug, Contra, Mega Man and other action platforming classics, Brotherhood United packs a punch. Of those games, it feels most like Metal Slug: in part due to the mountable vehicles and in part by asking you not only to eviscerate your foes but to save your brothers
5. Adventure Delivery Service
On every run I felt completely in control, even approaching overpowered, until the moment I wasn't. At any point, the tides could turn. This encouraged me to not get too cocky as I entered each new challenge.
4. Protolife
I found the block configuration system to be particularly clever and a nice way to spice up the genre... In addition to the innovative mechanics, Protolife sports excellent presentation. A bleak world is communicated well thanks to solid pixel art and an appropriately harsh mix of bass lines and insect squishes.
3. Kilcount
Each interaction has punchy dialogue and narration worthy of genuine chuckles – like the hostile robot that wants to take you into custody but can't make good on its threat thanks to buggy software causing it to restart on an endless loop.
2. NEO NEO
The various room layouts also encourage a surprising depth of tactics. There's destructible and permanent cover and trap-like hazards that make each room a brain teaser in its own right.
1. OVERWHELM
Developer Rauri O'Sullivan, maximizes a six color palette with environmental hazards and hostile enemies that appear menacing regardless of size. The sense of dread is ever-present and only looms larger as you progress.

OVERWHELM looks amazing! Anyone played it? How is it?
I played it and covered it in my Indie Weekly. It's a lot of fun!

It's not terribly long but I enjoyed the format and atmosphere. It's very challenging but there's a Celeste-like assist mode. It feels like a Metroid game but you can roam in any direction. Instead of you gaining powers, enemies "evolve" to be even tougher every time you beat a boss. It's kind of relentless in that way.

I think I mentioned this in one of the threads 5 years ago, but there is a 20 year old game very dear to my heart, for which the developer finally will release an English version (translated by me as a passion project).
I contacted him about 9 years ago about it, and due to different reasons, the project was on hold several times.

Well, thats going to be one of the most precious threads I ever made, haha.

Edit: I lied, its almost 30 years.

Curious. The name of the game?
Game of Robot, only ever released in German:
robjun.png

It looks simple enough, but it actually becomes deviously tricky without relying only on one mechanic throughout the game. Its a really cool adventure game basically, where a ton of the mechanics, item uses and inner workings need to be explored before knowing how to approach the levels in the best way. Its really small things, but for examply the grey blocks can be pushed around, but they are laid out in a way that means you can only grab 1 one the 2 items in each corner, which potentially alters your ability to access certain rooms a LOT. Really damn smart games.

Its a really, damn cool thing to explore and figure out and has 1 freeware episode with 12 rooms (the screenshot is 1 room), which was comparably simple and 4 full sequels with 60ish rooms each. I was talking to the developer about it and I have finished translating the free episode and the first full game. Unfortunately, they dont get a whole lot of money out of these games, despite being relatively high priced. Buying all 4 full games costs 35€ or individually 10€ for 1/2 and 15€ for 3/4. I will probably get a few keys to give away in a contest on Resetera. I will probably make a thread for it too and hope some people will participate in the contest to give these games their last hurrah with an english release.

Believe me, it does. The game is really devious and part of the challenge is figuring out how to progress. The game has a lot of info text for in-game hints and descriptions that help figuring out how to progress. The game looks very simple, but it's quite a tricky adventure game.

Here is the latest weekly:

There is a bad cut at 3:19. I don't think I can fix it but I'll be posting a standalone vid for that game to make up for it. Here are the excerpts:

6. Sword of the Guardian
Based on the combat engine, it's clear that the developer is a fan of action games. Sword of the Guardian is a game I kept coming back to because it has that Mario quality of being just plain fun to control. If you like action games, definitely give this a look.
5. Break the Targets
The end product is a game with challenges for any level of gamer. While it's not devoid of rough edges, Break the Targets earns a spot in my rotation by being unique (despite its influence) and exhilarating.
4. Suzy Cube
Do you want more adorable in your Mario? Try Suzy Cube! Developer Northern Byte Studios has taken the Super Mario 3D Land formula and really made it their own.
3. Gravity Well
In addition to the enjoyable play, the polish on display is impressive... Knowing that the player will be frustrated by challenging puzzles, [the developers] went out of their way to make everything else pleasant.
2. Haimrik
This unorthodox gameplay mechanism is intriguing and even endearing. To match that, Haimrik has a unique art style and aesthetic... The result is something that could sit alongside the cartoons we considered edgy in the 90s, like Ren and Stimpy.
1. Lost in Harmony
Lost in Harmony is the Elite Beat Agents of auto-runners. The music is bombastic, the style is turned up to 10 and it controls like a dream.

And today's games:

Super Dangerous Dungeons - $4.99 (PC)
giphy.gif

Guide Timmy the treasure hunter through dangerous dungeons in search of the legendary treasure!

ELDR LEGACY - $2.99 (PC)
giphy.gif

《ELDR LEGACY》 is a magical dark dungeon adventure game with a little Crewe style. The player uses all kinds of weapons and magic to destroy the enemy in a castle full of strange, firepower

VAD - Virtually Assured Destruction - $24.99 (PC)
giphy.gif

V.A.D - A multi genre VR game for Oculus Rift -
Battle through a myriad of challenges. Explore space stations, command a space shuttle, defeat giant enemy bosses, survive trap rooms and discover devices to defeat your enemies. As well as a bunch of mini games, puzzles and achievements.

Scrash - Free (PC)
giphy.gif

Being dubbed "Pong on crack", Scrash is a two player face-off with breakable blocks, air hockey and table-tennis all in one.

Up Left Out - $0.99 (PC)
giphy.gif

A puzzle game about unlocking stuff.

If any of you own a Switch (its also available on Steam): Ambition of the Slimes.

ss_5214402bf40904a3693080b282b71564fec5d239.600x338.jpg

Wow. Its a Final Fantasy Tactics style tactical RPG, but four super cool things:
1. It puts its genuinely original own spin on the genre and its worth it for that alone
2. It has like 200 hours of optional content
3. Its very challenging, starting with a puzzle aspect where you need to figure out which slimes to use for which ability
4. Its ridiculously cheap.

Its also out on Steam:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/568910/Ambition_of_the_Slimes/

Seriously though, this thing is incredibly good and hits the right notes between grinding and challenging long lasting content for me that I was looking for right now. Its bananas good.

Only downside is the music, which I muted by now and replaced with a French House playlist from my PC while playing on Switch.

With such a glowing recommendation there's only one option. Bought :)

Can you grind your way out of trouble or does the puzzle aspect determine too much to ignore it? Would prefer the latter.

The grinding definitely helps, but having a smart idea on how to approach a level is much more important. You cant really grind the combat ability, the only thing you marginally improve is the health of your units, which makes the game a bit more forgiving when you try to position units for the puzzle style solutions.

The other thing you can grind out is getting more units, but those just add to the complexity of different solution approaches. Speaking of which, its immensely satisfying to pick a team with the right skills and pull off your plan to overcome a particular challenge that had you stomped before. Amazing game, couldn't put it down for 3 hours last night.

That's what I'm looking forward to trying. I understand why many like just grinding it out, but to me games always lose a little in my estimation if that's possible. It's finding the right solution to a specific challenge that I find enjoyable. Last time I played a glowing Toma recommendation like this was Full Bore and that was fantastic. Hope this is equally great :)

It's kinda crazy that it doesn't even have a thread on here. There's just so many unknown gems constantly slipping under everyone's radar.

I knew this looked familiar. The game was on mobile some years ago. I think it got removed from the AppStore though. So it's great that it returns as premium title.

Yes, I looked it up. It's out on 3DS and iOS as well and was also playable on Vita through their mobile initiative, which is now gone. I can't find it on the Danish iOS store, but if I follow the Toucharcade review link, it says that it isn't available in Denmark and then tries to redirect me to the US store. I assume it's available there. Might be ruined by microtransactions, since it's F2P on iOS, unlike the other versions.

Yeah, its definitely one of those games. I will put up a thread for it if I find the time, as having only 7 Steam reviews is criminal. Its a genuinely great game.

If any of you own a Switch (its also available on Steam): Ambition of the Slimes.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/568910/Ambition_of_the_Slimes/

This looks wonderful.
Will definitely look it up on Switch.
And only 7 reviews? :(

New games up, some observations as quite a few weird games this month or games that have quite the divisive opinion in reviews:

1. Clash of Cards looks to hit the right notes for a card game, but seems to have some super weird balancing issues that completely put off some people, while others loved the content. Curious.

2. Deadly Delivery could be really fun and I am getting a Trackmania vibe here. Would love if somebody had some feedback on track variety and difficulty.

3. Disjoint looks like an amazing puzzle idea. Really need to check that out, but maybe I'll grab it on mobile if its available there.

4. Empire Deluxe is an absolutely fascinating story as someone apparently bought the rights for that franchise to bring it back to the modern age. No tech trees, but still supposed to be very engaging. Need to check that out.

5. Football, Tactics & Glory looks... glorious. I love the idea of a turn based sports game with developments and long term player investment. Usuall its rare to have those games back that up with strategically interesting minute to minute gameplay, but this one seems to fulfill on that too. Curious!

6. Objects in Space ... I mean just the description: "2D point-and-click stealth action in a massive open world." Somebody PLEASE report back on this.

7. RECOG the first Wave ... Dwarf Fortress style complexity in a civilization builder with a 3D environment. Always exactly hits my interest, but apparently stupidly complex and hard to get into. I will report back.

8. Squirgle is the reason I made this list. Its rare to see a puzzle game, in video and description, where I cant even figure out what the hell its about. I have 0 idea what this puzzle game does. Does somebody have an idea? Will need to try that to see how it works otherwise then.

I've been playing Squirgle for a few days. Wrote a preview/overview of it on Appspy
Squirgle looks complex at first glance - and it does have a number of mechanics to manage - but it's simpler to imagine the shapes along the bottoms of its screen instead as numbers. A point equals 1, a line has two points and so equals 2, a triangle has three points and equals 3, and so on until looping back to the point, depending on the number base you're playing with. Your goal is to combine these shapes to match the given structure, thinking ahead of how to properly blend your given shapes. Each successful match adds to your score multiplayer and as time ticks down, the screen cycles between colors. Match two shapes of like color and you'll both gain more time and earn the elusive "squirgle" to further increase your score.
Base 4 is "easy" enough, things get much more tricker when you're dealing with base 5 and 6 and so on

I've been playing Squirgle for a few days. Wrote a preview/overview of it on Appspy

Base 4 is "easy" enough, things get much more tricker when you're dealing with base 5 and 6 and so on
I still cannot comprehend how that actually transforms into a gameplay mechanic. Do you have more info in the article, can you link me?
If its not in the article, like what is the most basic idea here? You have a form like a triangle and you need to add symbolds to reach 3 elements of the triangle? That does not sound hard, but the video seemed a lot more intricate than that. How do I match shapes to the given structure?

So I ended up not recommending Deadly Delivery. I love a good challenge but it's brutal to the point of being cheap.

Football Tactics *is* glorious. I wish I knew more about the sport but I definitely want to dig into this one. I think it's right in your wheelhouse. Oddly, one of the game designs floating around in my head is turn based basketball .
