How much depth does this game have? I see it's on sale and it definitely looks fun but also a bit shallow. Anyone have some insight?

It isn't so much shallow as it is a more passive, laid-back game (despite the design intentions). Don't get me wrong, it's still good fun and I play a couple hours here and there, but you don't have quite the same agency as you do in a typical racer.

Definitely worth it for a discount!

It's definitely trickier than it looks. You've got four classes of vehicle, each with an offensive and defensive variant, and a good amount of nuance between them.

For example, bikes are super fast but extremely fragile, and can earn more boost by doing tricks. This comes in handy for modes like Overdrive, where teams race to burn up the most boost. But! Doing tricks means having more hang time from jumps, which will leave you vulnerable to swat takedowns.

At the same time, maxing out your Rush gauge with a bike means you'll have an opportunity to either lay down a trail of fire to take out other vehicles, or drain boost from nearby enemies.

That's just the bikes, but there's some nuance to the risk/reward mechanics of the game. That's not even getting into the discussion already in this thread, about how takedowns exactly work, and whether it's better to play aggressively or more passive aggressively.

That said, it's also hard to say how much you'll focus on these things, given how fast the game goes.

If you're concerned for the long term, though, it's hard to say. There are currently four modes (Switch, Lockdown, Countdown, and Overdrive), a handful of stages and various weather conditions to mix things up. Occasionally matches will restrict vehicle choice, too, which is kind of a welcome change when it popa up. Progress comes down to Overwatch-style unlocks of skins, icons for your tombstone, and various banners tied to in-game challenges.

Anyway, that's a whole lot to say - it's deeper than it looks, even if it doesn't offer a whole lot (for now!), but it's a lot of fun regardless.

It's on sale in the EU PSN, too.

It's basically 50% off, thats pretty insane considering the release date.

So...is the Xbox update still coming or not?

I played almost every day since launch and I haven't had any problems finding multiplayer sessions so far but it really feels like the Xbox version has been abandoned.

Also...the game has been on sale twice on Playstation. Nothing on Xbox.

Maybe the devs should think of a way to monetize the game and put it in Game Pass.

Yeah I feel a little left behind playing on the Xbox One.

It's coming. Not sure how often Codemasters games go on sale on Xbox, but if the Dirt games on PS4 are any indication, probably soon on that front, too.

the game is so much fun, it is also worth full price. there aren´t such games anymore, it´s unique. and it is definitely no "laid back" game in Multiplayer, far from it! you have to be on the lookout for attacks, need to have strategy to knock people off and fulfill the specific gamemode requirements. it can be very tense

'Laid back' wasn't the right phrase. I just mean that despite the e-sport, competitive trappings, you can still succeed by just gunning it, holding down the boost button, and throwing your weight around. Despite each class having its own abilities etc., if you just follow the fundamentals you don't even particularly need to worry much about those intricacies.

None of this to say it isn't fun and involved, it is! Just doesn't quite take the concept as far as it can go and require undying attention, imo.

yeah, it´s relatively easy to hop in, but it takes a little time to fully understand what´s going on .-)

For clarity all of the dev work is done in tandem on both PS4 & XB1. Both get submitted to 1st parties on the same date, but the fact of the mater is that the certification process on one platform for submissions and releases takes longer.

We could align the updates by delaying one, but I'd rather not make one group of players wait because of external logistics and processes.

This kind of hurts, as Motorstorm was the series of the generation for me. I have just seen video, but I can clearly see that the weight to the vehicles are lightened significantly. Do correct me if I'm off base here, but that's how it seems to be.
And laps without a fucking finish line, why? You know that would be something people would expect. But then again, how fun would that be if the straight up racing feels bland.
I'm not angry, Evo, just disappointed.

Pretty damning for someone who hasn't played the game. Heaven forbid the team try something innovative and different. Game's fun.

That's good to hear and I kinda expected cert to be the problem. It was just the messaging on twitter that sounded a little weird to me. And as you can see I am not the only one thinking this way ;)

You have to go in with a different mindset than with a traditional racing game. This is not Motorstorm, this is a new take on the competitive racing (combat) genre and I hope more games try out similar things as it's the must fun I had with an arcade-style racer in a long time. Not having to worrying about the finish line is just freeing.

I really love that there's no finish line, it's a unique mix of Moba's, Quake and racing games, the game modes and mechanics also encourage you to not boost ahead of everyone else with zones, your cars team buffs and such. It encourages you to drive smart instead of fast. The cars feel just great, there's multiple weight classes too.

How does the endgame on Switch matches work? I run out of switches but still respawn? It doesn't seem like the number of racers goes down even if I take down cars towards the end.

Yeah it's a bit confusing, they mention you have three switches but after that you can still pick the remaining cars. Is it possible that you acquire switches from enemies when you take down them?

You seem to have a rosy cozy attitude yourself, dr. irony.

I get that, It's just that Motorstorm was a love of mine. How is the weight, though?

nope, everyone has three lives, you see that on the circle above the vehicles how many are left...if your 3 lives are done, you can still participate in driving and taking lives away but you have already lost yours .-) you must attack those cars where there is a segment of the circle left (they will even tell you: no enemies in front of you if only cars who lost all their lives are in front, then you must let yourself fall back). the difficulty is to attack those who still have lives left!

Thanks for the clarification. Really loving the game and can't wait for the update. Do you have any plans to give us a content roadmap?

Yup, and each team has a certain amount of collective "switches" to lose before the other team has won.

I think my least favourite mode at the moment is zone mode, because sometimes it feels like the zone respawns right on top of the opposition team. And I kind of wish there were more opportunities to earn boost, I feel like a lot of times I'm just trundling along with my thumb on the X button but all out of boost.

yep, the game should give boost for driving through the gates, for being in the zone, for every 500 boost spent give something back in Overdrive and for knocking one of the lives away in Switch.... and those "O" symbols should also give a little more boost! sometimes it really takes long to get boost back, even with much jumps in between

zone mode is very very rush dependent, if a team chains the rushes one after another they can get the zones in no time...often it is the driver rushing to the zone the one who is scoring. and sometimes it´s just bullshit when the enemy team is in front and the zones spawn directly beneath them .-)

Yeah, it surprises me how often I don't have enough boost and just feel useless. And even if there are fodder nearby, you actually have to give them a decent nudge because you're going so slowly. Agree with all your points, nearly everything should add to your boost meter just like Burnout did. Every little thing added more boost in that and it was perfect.

Doing map challenges in lockdown is also a pain, I have to crush or do air take downs and some other things but everyone always seems way faster.

Why is this update taking so long?
Why no discount?
Why no free weekend as well?

Wow, a free weekend is a massive deal. Glad they're doing it!

I noticed that the ranked stuff has kind of updated or whatever but still isn't selectable. Anyone able to work out why? I guess maybe my level isn't high enough, or I haven't completed enough career or training or whatever.

wow, i mean that is one hell of a promotion...half price for PS Plus members in EU and a free weekend,i hope for them many will be "Onrushed" to buy the game finally, Rushy and the team really deserve the success.

i think this game is one with the best reviews and best user feedback this year, it is somehow sad that they have to drastically cut the price for it so shortly after release, but i hope this promotion will bring in many new players.

I haven't had an issue finding game so far on Xbox, granted yesterday was holiday in US. Is the concern the game is not doing well based on the price drops?

Having massive network issues since I installed the update.

Edit: Yeah...multiplayer I completely unplayable for me now. Also the controller rumble randomly turns off.
Try restarting your console. i had massive framerate issues after i installed the last update and rushy suggested i reboot the console since its a known issue with xbox one.

Hopefully the free weekend is also happening here in Australia. I didn't get to test the beta as I was a little late with that one. Can't see anything on the store as yet.

Edit - Just checked the store and I notice there's a demo. Is that the free weekend trial? Can't say I noticed if there was a demo before.

So is this "demo" the full game (I would like to test the career mode) or is truly a demo like the beta?

Any update on the PC version? All been mum since...Jan/Feb. Doubloons ready to go.
