Right at the beginning of the movie, maybe a minute in, as the convoy is setting out from the base. Watch the sky

Then watch as that story detail is never brought up again /rolleyes
Oh shit you're right
It's not even a minute in, it's right before the 45s mark
Don't know how I missed that. I probably thought it was lightning
I saw that too. I can only assume the film was heavily re-written as these seem like major plot points that the film just tries to hide.
Nah it's because two prequels are planned to cover this stuff, one being animated.
Yay...

Holy shit. I really had to push myself to finish this. I was watching the movie while also browsing this thread. Zach did Dave dirty with this movie and the role. My boy can act, I've seen the extra cut content on Blade Runner. This script did him no favours.

  • Movie was a literal blur at times to watch, Jesus...like, everyone else here has gone over why the movie just doesn't work and I guess they're expecting success to launch a franchise out of this mess to explain away all the set up this movie has (but zero fucking payoff). Reminds me a lot of the MK 2021 film, both with regards to structure, editing, pacing, 'UnIvErSe BuIlDiNg', urgh.
[*]The mother from the camp fucking dies. She must have been flung from the helicopter during the crash and we just didn't see it because of messy the movie is. I refuse to believe that Zach just 'forgot' about her.
[*]I thought y'all were just blind and seeing shit when you went off about Terminator Zombies but no, legit there are two moments where we see them, one in a dark hallway that gets blasted and you see sparks, then another on the casino floor.
[*]Fucking OOF at using Zombie at the end of the film.

  • The single most interesting part of the movie was when they were by the vault and the one guy was going off about how what they're doing might be just an endless cycle of death:
    • 'Is it another team or is it us...think about it, us! I mean look at them, it's us! It could be us in another timeline and we're caught in some infinite loop of fighting and dying...and Tanaka...Puppet Master'. Its a damn shame that the movie didn't actually go down that route...HOWEVER, there is a much more interesting and entertaining movie out there with Frank Grillo called Boss Level that does exactly that! Please go watch that instead.
If that is all I can stand, then I can't stand no more. Zachy, baby. I keep giving you passes for your films and you keep fucking me. By extension, you've fucked my boy, Dave, as well. No more. I'm done.

why did the one guy keep referring to the safecracker as "kid"? I looked it up because I thought the dude looked kind of old, and he's fucking 40. Only 7 years younger than Omari Hardwick.

I actually liked their rapport but the way he dressed and the dialogue makes it seem that character was supposed to be like 23

if i was tasked to retrieve $200 million dollars from a Las Vegas casino overrun with zombies, I would

1. hire a lot of bad ass mercenary type of people, not Youtubers.
2. get the fucking pass code for safe.
3. not waste time talking about my feelings
4. leave my useless daughter somewhere else.

Jesus Christ this movie was fucking stupid, and the unnecessary bokeh made everything look like a dream sequence. Someone needs to stop letting Zac direct movies cause he has shown us time and time again 300 was a fluke.

You know it's kind of fucked up that the most believable thing in this movie were the zombies.

The writing in particular is really bad. And not intentionally bad like other movies in this genre.

RE: UFOs, robots, time-loops, etc.

It feels like he watched a Marvel/DC movie and saw all the stuff they were sprinkling in as Easter Eggs for comic fans and just said, "What if I do that, but without any prior basis for people to work off of?" Like he saw all the rampant speculation and big pops that MCU stuff would get from sneaking a reference to a character in, and just assumed you can do that with anything if you just sprinkle random unexplained BS into a movie.

Wow, suddenly all the crap makes some sense, they're just sequel baiting.

Just finished and I really regret wasting my time on this trash. Probably the worst movies I've seen in a while. The plot is stupid, acting are terrible and dialogs are cringed at times. Also, what the fck is up with camera works? Why the fck everything has to be so blurry. It's like every shot with characters is shot at f0.95. It's so distracting.

This movie proves to me that Rottentomato ratings don't align with my taste in movies at all.

I'm kind of impressed that someone could make a 2.5 hour zombie movie where so little actually happens.

This can be enjoyed, and still be a bad movie. I thought the action was pretty great, and there were some good ideas, but it just fell apart. I couldn't in good conscience recommended it, but I found enough to like that I don't feel like I waisted my time with it.

I think the best thing about this movie (shit, I really have to dig hard to find something positive) is fatality. Some cool killing animations in there.

I thought it was ok. I expected better, but I still got a lot of enjoyment out of it. I liked the odd Romero-esque take on the zombies. There's a ton of good no reload gun action in this, especially towards the end.

I kind of hated how most of it was shot and edited, though, which is usually the strong suit for a Snyder movie. It felt like every shot was zoomed in a bit too much, with a lot of blurry backgrounds. Probably an effects budget thing. It really wears on you for a movie this long. That epilogue in the Justice League Snyder Cut -- the one major part of it I straight up didn't like -- also has the same kind of look, so I guess this is something Snyder's messing with lately. Not a fan, I hope he moves on! It manages to make something as simple as two characters talking, cutting back and forth, exhausting to watch.

Can anyone explain why Tanaka could just give them the safe code?

And what was the plan to move a literal ton of money into a helicopter and get out

actually the whole plan was to capture the zombie queen's head. The $200 million was just a ruse to get Batista's team to cover Tanaka's bodyguard or act as a diversion, either which were unnecessary. But once the bodyguard got the head, he could have just went to the exit? Also how did Tanaka know about the zombie queen's head? Also WHY THE FUCK is there a zombie queen and king ? Was she wearing that outfit before she turned, or was she a Vegas showgirl or something?

Zac basically combined Predator, Game of Thrones and Dead Rising and made the worse movie of his career. Also this just proves Rotten Tomatoes AND movie critics are fucking worthless. This movie basically got the same rating as Superman Returns and Crystal Skull.

Tig Notaro's Peters was so obnoxious, so full of cliches

"Still weird as ever." 🙄

Let's not forget
the final four would have stayed alive if she hadn't decided to abandon everyone before going "haha psyche!"

Who am I kidding, dad and daughter would have probably wasted more time just staring into each other like idiots.

If you browse the reviews, some seem like they're writing about an imaginary movie the reviewer made up, and others disparage the movie yet still give it a fresh tomato.

I can't tell if the quality of writing has plummeted in the last few years, or if reviewers are just really generous with Snyder since he got booted off JL.

There are 'top critics' writing about how Army of the Dead is "expertly paced", and comparing JL to Metropolis and fucking Satantango.

The RT number, and accompanying reviews are increasingly worthless.

This felt like run of the mill marvel movie just slightly longer.

Also best Zombie movie since dawn of the dead.

Ok time pass nothing special

Question: is this the only zombie movie you've seen since Dawn of the Dead?!

I refuse to believe someone would think this is the best entry in the genre in nearly 20 years. Even if you're only talking about action films you've got Train to Busan, 28 Weeks Later, Dead Snow, the excellent TV show Kingdom and the brilliant found footage Spanish film REC. If you want to stretch the definition of zombie movies a little The Crazies is a solid film too.

If you're just talking about zombie movies in general there's Shaun of the Dead, Life After Beth, The Scout's Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse, The Girl With All The Gifts (super underrated) and Zombieland. Heck, I would probably say Warm Bodies is better too, albeit a totally different take on the genre.

So yeah, I'm by no means a zombie genre aficionado but these are much better films than AotD off the top of my head in the last 10-15 years

So how did black dude initially survive when that entire area would be blanketed in high levels of radiation? Or is the idea that zombies are immune to radiation?

In the original script for 2007, that character jacked a dude in radiation gear, then left the site thanks to using their outfit.

Army of the Dead 2021 just went "Fuck it".

Best zombie movie since dawn is fucking crazy. There are episodes of TWD that are better than this and that show sucks. This shit doesn't even outdo Zombieland.

Watched the second third of the movie last night.

I've seen many 'leave them, they're gone, you can't help them!" moments in movies, but the character actually has to be in irredeemable trouble for it to work.

When "Vasquez from aliens" comes smashing through the window, and has like 2 zombies vaguely near her and a bunch 15 feet behind, "leave her, she's gone" comes out of someones mouth. What the fuck, shoot the two zombies near her and she's just fine? I almost turned it off. That was the stupidest moment so far.

The female zombie doing flashdance movements when approaching the sacrifice, I mean, there is a certain zombie movie tone where that could be appropriate or even fun/funny (especially since it's vegas), but it had this air of seriousness about it, sucked. Also this movie has less tension/scares than most of the Harry Potter movies.

From the trailer I expected fun, what I'm getting is serious/boring. No tension, thirlls, no originality, set pieces, creativity, 90% of it could have been made on a shoestring budget because it's literally just boring conversations between actors and walking through buildings occasionally shooting a zombie in the face, and somehow even shooting zombies in the face is incredibly boring/forgettable filler.

The safe approach / safe cracking bit was the only segment I slightly enjoyed so far.

It's like they didn't storyboard anything, or come up with anything in the writers room except the broad strokes of the story/concept. Which is a shame because I think the overall concept for the story is good.

Hopefully the last third redeems it.

I totally agree with this, they stretched out this long (and admittedly pretty good) action scene forever with it looking increasingly likely she would survive and kick that guys ass, but then she just gives up and tells him to go and he stands there looking sad rather than just shooting the 1 or 2 zombies around her. She was literally steps away. It was dumb.

And yeah I still can't get over all the zombies doing silly little jumps and prancing like they were on the set of cats. Not to mention how most of them were quite muscular and healthy looking... for zombies.

Probably one of the worst depictions of zombies ever, literally just dancers with makeup on

I went in with zero expectations and kind of enjoyed it. The movie is a dumb as a bag of bricks, but I never felt like it pretended to not be exactly that.

One of the worst movies that I've seen in quite some time. There's no good action, plot, character development or really any positive aspect to the movie at all. The camera work and cinematography is good is about the only good thing that you can say. Other than that, it's totally flat and unexciting.

Oh wow, the forced "out of focus" camera, or whatever he did with the aperture, was overdone and became as annoying as his overdone slowmo shots from other films.

Story was also pretty dumb (reminded me of I Am Legend in some bits). The ending was icing on the cake: Batista goes feral after minute 10-14 minutes. Black guy in safe has time to escape safe, walk the irradiated city and desert for miles to car, drive to an airstrip, and take off... and only then (hours later) begin going feral? Ok Zack! You must really want that sequel.
