I understand the sentiment but how do you go about doing that? The "many sides" shit doesn't work.

But there is a bridge. It's always been there. You just need to walk to cross it.
Yup. And the toll on that bridge has only ever been for them to give up on their notions of superiority in favor of equality and to stop hurting others. Seems to be much too high a price for them to be willing to pay, though.

I'm just confused because we already know how others got this way. Cause they're shit people. There is no big huge mystery to understand. They are okay with racism or worse or even welcome it, especially when they can profit of it tax wise.
When my republican voting family shrugged at the children in cages articles it was a fucking clear sign that they're morally reprehensible pieces of shit, especially when they wouldn't budge. Like what do you think there is to understand. These people love fake news because they do not care for facts. They care about self gain and feeling good about that self gain and that's merely the good version of these people, the bad version actively delight in keeping others down they view as inferior.

If a civil war starts we all know Dems aren't the ones that would be opening fire.

I haven't met anyone who shrugged at this stuff, which may be why we appear to be disconnected.

I usually see them deflecting. "Obama built those cages," or "Trump is against racism because xyz," or "neighborhoods are being destroyed by antifa!"

Or my favorite "you can't trust politicians and it doesn't matter anyways."

So I see more people who are tragically bought in, and they believe they're the good guys. So it's not as simple - from my perspective - as "these people are just shit."

Even more when you see otherwise sweet, kind people slowly descend into this madness and rhetoric.

I'll be willing to open a dialog to those who would listen. I understand that I wouldn't have the same wants and needs of say a farmer is Nebraska or someone located in rural Missouri; their voices need to be heard as well as those living in densely populated areas. I feel for those people and not the hate spewing, MAGA wearing bigots or the "fuck you, got mine" R's. I'm more sympathetic towards the marginalized voices that need the same type of help, respect, and treatment that socialism could provide them. It's just that the messaging is lost in translation.

deep breath.....

sigh....

THEY ARE LITERALLY TRYING TO MURDER US!

That is not hyperbole. They tried to murder people counting votes. I'm supposed to reach out and sympathize with these people? Are you out of your fucking mind? I'll let President Biden do the outreaching.

They'd love his usefulness. Just as soon as he ceased to be useful to them, they'd wipe their asses with him and discard him into a rubbish heap.
True, and MAGA-minorities get super signal boots for their utility, but they're just as willing and quick to tear down their own. Drudge Report is now "leftist" to these people (replaced by a site filled with 'can't wait to get my shooting on' fantasists), and Fox News might be tossed into the same heap.

If you drink the Kool-aid you're in, if not you're the enemy to be scapegoated.

I think we should at least make a deal with these clueless celebs to put a pause on their calls for sympathy until the Trump supporters at least stop screaming "FRAUD!!!" at the top of their lungs. A quick check of the news indicates that a lot of the GOP leaders are still entertaining Trump's election fraud bullshit which makes any already slim chance of reconciliation impossible. It's basically part 2 of Birtherism.

That just sounds like you're bad at nailing them down on facts.
I did not let my family deflect and that is where they shrugged and chose to look away.
Republicans when faced with facts will come up with millions of bullshit reason and when you hammer them down on changing the topic and don't let them they'll just silently stop talking and write you off.

These people are only sweet to people they do not perceive as others and that is not enough.

I can understand where Levi is coming from, but we almost lost our Republic as we knew it this week. Things would have been forever changed if Trump won reelection.

That said, I do think the first step to healing is listening -- which Biden has promised to do. We have to give this a chance.

However, listening isn't a sign of compliance and we all have a responsibility to shoot vitriolic shit down and most importantly, act. If people refuse to listen and come to a consensus for all, then it's time to act. Right matters and we have to stand-up for it.

We have to keep voting and showing up to the ballet box to bury hate.

This country's superpower is voting, we HAVE to use it.

So you guys want to say "fuck you" to 70 millions people? Your country is doomed then.
As a Black person I have an inalienable right to say "FUCK YOU" to the majority of white people and Conservatives in this country.

If this country is doomed it's because of them, not us. Get your shit straight.

Nah, I mean like, you can hit them with facts, and then they'll deflect with something some Republican did or just go with their alternate perspective.

Remember that I said a fun example was "you can't trust politicians anyways," right? Past a certain point, it's "you can't prove that he meant that," or whatever else.

Or, again, bring up the failings of Democrats as a counter. Because after all, if everyone is bad in some way, we're just picking our poisons.

Again you're saying you failed to press them and let them just change the topic to irrelevant bullshit.
I did press on their morality on how they feel about families being torn apart and it was silence when I just maintained the same question and straight up told them all that stuff has nothing to do with the question answer the goddamn question.

The saddest and most shameful thing and biggest indictment is that my family are immigrants themselves that fled from war in their country. So this bullshit does not fly with me. Republicans are evil cancer nuff said.

If they enable fucking fascists like Trump? Yes. Absolutely. Fuck every single person who enabled Trump and all the damage he did to the country.

the thing is such a huge part of the population cant be ignored. you have to bring at least some of them over to your sid. people can be persuaded. trump did it before you.
the next election is coming, and a deeply divided america will never be progressive enough to deal with big issues.

Yeah, 70 million voters were okay with an administration committing genocide on the border. Fuck those people. I will never forgive them for that.

you dont have to forgive them, but politically you have to win some of them over, otherwise there will be a danger that all the progress that will be made in the next 4 years will be for nothing.

dont ignore trumps supporters, win them over. if trump could do it, you can too.

Maybe. I haven't met a single person who's good at it, though. There are so many people who will refuse to ever address your point in that way. You got your family to stop talking about irrelevant bullshit, but I don't know anyone who has broken out of their cognitive dissonance that way.

It's probably more impressive to me that your family went silent, because it means for a moment they had no party line counterargument, and they chose not to press you in response.

"Who built the cages though? Who built the cages? Did you know Obama deported so many more people?"

Your family sounds closer to being saved than many of the people I've met, honestly.

All the same, I understand where you're coming from, very much more than you know.

Anyways, my point is not that the Republican party isn't an evil cancer, but that people are so easily manipulated and fed the right information. And feeling like a shameful person reinforces cognitive dissonance.

With immigrants in particular, either they got in easier than others or they fled communism, and they're scared. Just like the talking heads told them they should be.

EDIT: And more importantly, they haven't disappeared, nor have they stopped supporting Trump. If Trump 2.0 wins in 4 or 8 years, will you be surprised?

Nope. I also I didn't see calls for Trump supporters to be nice to minorities, Democrats, etc. These people don't want civility and actively despise us so why should we extend hands in friendships to them? It'd be like bringing a water gun to an actual gun fight.

Well, if they're okay with supporting genocide, Then nothing I can say will win them over.
We tried winning their better angels of mercy, they have no mercy. These people want people who don't look like them to die. There is no winning them over and frankly I don't care to engage with them. I literally was accosted on my property within MINUTES of the election being called by a crazy trump supporter. There is no winning them over.

That might be one the most "both sides" posts I've seen from a celeb. I get what he's saying about building bridges, but it's hard to feel that way when the person next to you is pumping gas in their car and has a bold confederate emblem on the front bumper of their car. I ain't weeping for the racist trash out there that voted for that guy and thought it was okay because of morality based on their religious beliefs or conservative views. It's all bullshit when the person you're voting for gives zero shit about you, your morals or your God. He only cared about himself.

These people are hurt, so now we have to baby them, rub their backs and tell them it'll be okay? Boo-fucking-hoo. They'll get over it.

It's tiring trying to reason with Trumpers and at the end of it all they don't give a shit about you or what's right. They only care about what's right for them regardless of how much damage it brings others so no I don't think I want to give them any empathy, they can all eat shit.

there is winning them over, you already did it in this election. there are trump-biden voters as much as there were obama-trump voters. this fight is worth fighting.

the most extreme of the extreme you wont get, sure. but choosing between 2 political parties is a quite difficult task and i bet there were a lot of people unsure which candidate to choose. If you remember these exit polls from fox about a whole lot of different issues, it showed that your country isnt as divided as it seems, on issues at least. but the media makes it out to be far more divided. please for the love of god dont give up on your neighbors and colleagues try to reach them with arguments. nothing is gained by more division. you, as Americans, have a global responsibility for other democracies. donald tusk's tweet the other day, that right wing tendencies all over the world are fueled by trump is true. you have the unique ability to lead this world with ambition, so please dont give up.

If we want anything to get better we kind of need to... Otherwise, what? Go out and kill them all? That's not an option. The only way forward is to try to win them over and belay their fears instead of pushing them even farther down the Q rabbit hole...

It sucks, it really does... but we have to prove to the moderates that the left is the non-hateful, non-malicious side and that requires being gracious and always honest and willing to accept those far-right who have been horrible people who start changing their ways. Otherwise, we'll be agents for them to point at to indoctrinate more people.

Always seems to be a one way street. Quick google search from around the last election in 2016 gives me a shit load of results about dems needing to do it, but jack shit about it going the other way. I don't remember celebrities telling Trumpers in 2016 that they needed to have empathy for Clinton voters.

Fragile ass racists and fascist seem to be the perfect example of can dish it out but can't take it.

The idea that people just get to put away their MAGA hats, roll up their flags and slowly back away from all the absolute disgusting shit that has been happening over the last four years and we have to approach them with kid gloves or else it's a " HEY NOW, we're not moving forward as a country if you shame any of these people..."

That idea is appalling, thankfully I'm pretty sure that's not what he Or the people saying "we need to come together and forward " are talking about. Everyone knows you'll never reach the MAGA diehards.

There are plenty of other people that aren't completely drowning in madness to try and "bring over "even if I still think it's disgusting that they ever favored Trump

I'm not interested in gloating, but I'm also not interested in trying to find some "middle road" between Trump supporters and the ideals we know to be true. When it comes to supporting "religious liberties" that serve as pretext for being bigoted to customers, fuck that. When it comes to not doing everything we can to address climate change and stem the affects of it that'll affect the poor first and foremost, fuck that. When it comes to not doing everything we can to grant affordable healthcare to people as a bare minimum, fuck that.

This isn't about them. It's about doing what we know to be right and equitable to the greatest number of people, especially those who are the most vulnerable and disenfranchised. If Trumpers want to see the pursuit of equality as an attack on their ideals, then they're welcome to feel that way. Their feelings don't matter here - only doing what we can to make this country more just for everyone. And like it or not, the byproduct of this pursuit typically favors their bigoted-asses, too.

Correct, but that seems to be what they're most receptive to. In particular, what are they fearful of?

well concern for ones safety is very human. if politicians package it well, its a very effective way to win over people. here in germany there was someone who did the same thing, but look at modern germany now, things changed overall. change is possible, but the work has to be done.

Safety from what?

Also, could you be more specific about what you're referring to with Germany?

Trying to win a Trumper over is like Obama inviting over a Klan member to Thanksgiving. They don't give a fuck about us, why care for them? We don't need them on our side to progress.

All i need is Biden to do his best to work with the GOP if we don't take back the senate. I don't give a shit about him winning the love of Trump supporters.

I won't be surprised but that just means America is that racist. It won't be because progressives didn't make nice with the racists.
I've been generally cautioning people against thinking Trump was a one off and always pointing to the increase of 11 million votes.
The mode Dems should be in is fight for the next couple decades to keep fascism from winning. It's going to be an insanely long insanely tiring fight but it's the only option if positive changes are wanted.

People that act like Biden winning is all that's needed are awfully stupid too. The next fight is the fight for the senate. Clearly the numbers are there to turn red states blue and vote Trump out. It's on the Dems to deliver results at mall costs and earn those votes or the US is dunzo. If Biden's term is just going to be Obama 3.0 the US is fucked.
