Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but is Ys a series with fan service type elements or no? Just not my jam.
One of the earliest scenes in Ys 8 introduces a female character accidentally dropping her towel so Adol sees her naked and then she screams and stomps off and stays irrationally mad at him for a significant portion of the game. Every female character is also very questionably dressed (especially compared to the male ones).

It's not the worst offender or anything, and it hasn't reached "dealbreaker" status for me yet (unlike Cold Steel where I'm fed up with the trashy sexist nonsense that keeps getting worse and worse with every game), but Ys games have become increasingly sketchier with times with the way women and girls are portrayed.

Thanks all for the info on the series. Turn-based isn't my thing generally unless timing-based action commands are involved like in Mario RPGs or UnderHero. How do the early games with bump combat hold up? Or the DS remake?

I love ys 8 on pc after all the update...i tried 9 on ps5...the demo , it was so ugly ( resolution wise). I hope they are doing a patch for the ps5, or i m going to wait the pc version for this game :(

Like with Trails of Cold Steel IV, I'm holding off for the Switch version even though I really want to play both on PS4 now. Sounding promising anyway.

Though I really love Falcom's games this sums them up generally now days.

That towel scene was so stupid and unneeded. Shame really as the rest of YsVIII was an absolute blast. (Dana's costume was also terrible even if I love her character)

Hey, I just want to clarify something here;

When bugs like this get added in localization? That's not the localization company's fault, that's the original JP dev, who are in charge of implementing the localization. NISA might be to blame for not catching the bug themselves, but considering the low stock of PS5 consoles - and the fact that Sony just didn't get them review code until a little more than a week before embargo lifted - I'm more inclined to blame Sony here. If NISA doesn't have a devkit, they can't check for bugs with PS5 BC until they get retail code from Sony.

It's a bad situation, it shouldn't have been this way, but it's more complicated than folks like to make it out to be.
This seems like a pretty massive leap to make for a publisher that's notorious for similar fuck ups.

It's a good thing the Ys series are Action RPGs then, huh?

I pre-ordered Ys IX on the PS Store a few days ago (kinda surprising it's cheaper than the retail price) but it's pretty annoying Aus/NZ's release is on the 12th. Hopefully the game runs properly on PS5 by then, cause there's no way I'm plugging my Pro back in.

I just finished VIII a couple days ago and, yep, Laxia's intro and the Eternian costuming are a bummer. Really only detracts from what is otherwise a very fun game!

Because I just played VIII I will probably wait a while on Nox or see how that Switch version pans out.

Trails of Cold Steel 1, 2, 3 and 4 all run at 4k60 on the PS4 Pro and PS5, so I'm kinda baffled this game runs at only 1080p60 maximum. It's the same engine, surely?

No, and seems like Ys IX is harder to run.

From the PS5 backwards compatibility thread:

Quite a bummer, the image quality at 1080p really isn't good. :/ but oh well

Personally, I think they hold up just fine. They're just different. Some might say they have aged, but I feel like you can't really call them antiquated because no other games really shared that kind of system.

The updated versions on Steam and PSP/Vita look pretty good and they have terrific music (though from what I've heard, I'd avoid the DS version). Plus, they're pretty short (Ys I and II and basically one game).

Definitely try them out if you get into the series.

The first game is.... Kind of weird. Bump combat takes some getting used to (you literally run into the enemy to attack), and you'll end up at max level like halfway through the game. That being said, I enjoyed it a lot in its simplicity, and I was personally amazed by how much I loved the final boss despite the simple combat.

2 adds more stuff, and is pretty much the direct continuation story wise of 1(an oddity to the series as most are very standalone) . It's... Okay. I remember thinking the more stuff took away something from the charm of the simple combat. There is no bad Ys game that I've played but 2 is probably the weakest imo.

If you're trying to get into the series for the first time, oath in felghana is where you want to start imo. I think it's a remake of ys 3, and it's excellent.

I have it pre-ordered, but have my expectations in check. I loved Ys VIII, but from every trailers I've seen of IX, something has me feeling cautious. I'm sure I'll like it, but just don't wan to get myself so hyped that I end up disappointed.

Does this game have as much insane bloating as Ys VIII?

I mean I just did not enjoy the gameplay loop. The map is trash and there's always 47382 things to collect or go to. It felt like busywork: the game

I really hated YS VIII (too bloated, terrible story, bad combat), but loved Oath in Felghana and Origin. Any chance this is better than YS VIII?

The general impression seemed to be that Ys 9 was weaker than Ys 8. So if you didn't like that, probably not going to like this.

Hopefully the PC version will be good at launch this time. The PS4 experience looks too compromised for me to bother with, unfortunately. Ys VIII was a massive mess on PC to begin with, but I bought it after it had been polished up and it's absolutely rock solid now. I'll definitely take a wait and see approach and not jump on this one day one.

Did you play through the entire game? Last week I got to the point where I controlled Dana in some windy valley and I stopped bc I was so exhausted

Like I thought the end of Chapter 2 wasn't gonna be that long but it just dragged on and on and on and on

I'm assuming it doesn't magically change into a much better game

Also why does no one talk about there being just way, way, way, way too many relevant buttons. Take that as a sign to de-bloat ur game

IX has all the things you disliked in VIII so I doubt you'll be happy.
Actually from my time with the Ys IX demo, movement feels far more fun and therefore combat is more fun as well

And I've heard only positive things about IX's story but then again maybe I should take those opinions with a grain of salt bc I'm not a modern Falcom fan

That's what the consensus on the story seems to be yeah, much more focused on story / character development than its predecessors, and the story is apparently good. Exploration seems super fun aswell, especially in the city.

Personally had a blast with the demo, the gameplay feels super snappy, music kicks ass, movement feels great. Can't wait to dive in, it's one of those games I just know i'm going to like.

I finished it, including the True Final Boss. The game actually does get better near the end, but not enough to make up for the horrible slog to get there (I especially enjoyed the last few bosses compared to the rest).

I am a big Falcom fan despite also not enjoying their modern stuff, this gives me enough hope that I'll probably just buy it. :)

I owned the Korean version of Ys IX for a while before the English version finally announced and I feel the same. Something about the combat just brought me back to the older games and I loved it. Though I liked VIII well enough, I didn't get the same feeling, so I am optimistic about IX.

The game runs 60 FPS on PS5, but seems like there are a decent amount of crashes

@Owl
From RPG Site.com " I have played most of Ys IX on my PS5 and I crashed at least 10 times throughout my 33-hour playthrough of the game; one of them even shutting my PS5 off entirely".

Not a good look, I'll hold from this until it gets fixed. Had 60+ crashes and really don't want to experience anything like that again

Hearing about a lack of scenery and setting kinda kills this for me.
Especially given that the scenery isn't all that interesting to begin with.

I've been hearing this complaint from those who played the Japanese version, so it's also not all that surprising.
I'll pass for now.

Have been playing Memories of Celceta this week and it reminded me how good this game can be. Hearing they nailed the story and combat solidify my decision to support this day 1.

Wanted to get in Day 1, but those PS5 crash reports are worrying. Might wait a while instead.

It was apparently added in the localized version. Let's hope they fix this shit quickly.

Why is NISA so awful? Literally the worst choice after the fall of ignition entertainment.

Also Ys VIII is awesome, but it is crazy they had to retranslate the game and the PC port was released broken.

Good luck to everyone waiting for the PC/Switch port of Ys IX
