You all think they are lowering their quality for no reason? Why don't you search the internet for "slower internet speeds" or cruise a big ISP's forums and see all the people talking about how much slower their internet is with the usage being up in their neighborhoods.

It's REALLY bizarre that you all are essentially calling it a hoax. Its not... These companies have more to lose, than they do to gain by doing this. Its legit out of necessity.

What is the point if you can just switch it back

Default settings are a powerful thing. Users largely stick to whatever's on by default. You'll get large swathes of users who don't even realise videos are in SD or don't care and won't bother changing it. What better way to save bandwidth than to turn HD off for those who don't even notice it/care?

Is OP the type of person to not inform others if he was bit by a Zombie?
Just play some videos in SD, it won't hurt and it helps with the recent spike on internet usage.

Who is "you all"? Most in this thread agree with you so much that OP is whining about being "attacked".

Netflix, YouTube, and Sony have all announced changes to reduce bandwidth demands. Have any of them put forth any evidence that bandwidth use will outstrip capacity at any point in the next year?
They've obviously got thier internal metrics and are in touch with government and providers, they don't have to make this publicly available, fact that it's a cross company initiative shows it's quite obvious that load on services has gone up exponentially and infrastructure is being overburdened. The internet is a lifeline, it's fundamental to how we manage ourselves through this uncertainty, they're not going to take chances and do whats they can to avoid outages. Reducing quality seems sensible, it's simply not important during a crisis.

Their thinking is that most people are just too lazy to change it back, or most likely won't notice. A lot of the people watching youtube do it while they start a video, put the phone in their pocket and let it run. Or listen to music.

If you're a user that actually watches videos, you'll just click on the setting to put back the video to the quality you want. There might be an addon for that, but really it's not a big hassle to change it back.
Little ugly children won't notice so there's no sense wasting hi def on little childrens

Makes sense. You don't need high definition on a 5-inch screen.

I wish you could have 480p video without sacrificing the audio quality that comes with 720p and higher video.

How the hell do some people here think about yourselves and your fucking unimportant videos not being hd in a time like this.

Exactly. If Youtube can cripple our Internet it has far bigger issues that need addressed.

It's not just Youtube, it's mass collective action. The number of skype calls, zoom calls and remote desktop sharing has increased by a huge amount as more and more people work online, deliver classes online, share work documents and code online, etc.

More people are gaming online, downloading games online, watching netflix, watching youtube, watching porn, etc etc because their normal social events have been cancelled or shifted online.

Getting major streaming services like Netflix and Youtube to drop their usage helps, but it's not just those services alone that are the problem. They're just large, easy places to make cuts.

I should probably disable some shit then. Browser extensions force the highest resolution possible up to 4k and I force 1440p on mobile with Youtube Vanced. I don't think there's a way they can correct for that without targeting those specific implementations directly.

Ah shit guys! It would have helped if I actually read the reason why Youtube is defaulting videos to SD resolution. I'm fine with that and have no problem turning the resolution down further to 240p or 320p.

Is there a setting or web browser plugin to force everything back to highest quality?

Among a pandemic. Wow. This is one of my favorite posts ever. Pure 100% asshole. Bravo.

Its probably just a manual toggle. This is more for the old folks that dont know what a resolution is when watching youtube in their phones, tablets and tvs. And if its not a toggle, meh, its fine so we can all share the internet. Maybe ask in quora.

Even YouTube Red? Pretty shit if so.

Edit: Read the article, you can still change it back. Thank goodness.

There kind of is if it's coming at the expense of people trying to work, kids trying to learn, people trying to talk to their quarantined families etc.

We all live in the same world and we need to be cognizant of each other.

More and more you realize that a lot of people don't want to do their part to help if they don't get benefits from it.
