YouTube fucking over their creators, what a surprise lol.

Edit: New rules

. Why are we making this change? Through our research, we found that people often associated the checkmark with an endorsement of content, not identity. To reduce confusion about what being verified means, we're introducing a new look that helps distinguish the official channel of the creator, celebrity or brand it represents. The new look will also be displayed more consistently across channel pages, search and comments and is more difficult to replicate so that viewers can be sure of a channel's identity.
. What is the new criteria for channel verification come October? Under our current eligibility requirements, channels with more than 100,000 subscribers can be verified regardless of need for proof of authenticity. Our new criteria prioritizes verifying prominent channels that have a clear need for proof of authenticity. We look at a number of factors to determine if a channel meets this criteria, including:
Authenticity: does this channel belong to the real creator, artist, public figure or company it claims to represent?
Prominence: does this channel represent a well-known or highly searched creator, artist, public figure or company? Is this channel widely recognized outside of YouTube and have a strong presence online? Is this a popular channel that has a very similar name to many other channels?

Going from a checkmark, a symbol used for the same purpose on multiple platforms, to a barely noticeable grey background is pretty absurd

So what are the changes and why are the new requirements difficult to meet?

There's a ton of missing information here.

"multiple"
*only 2 I haven't heard of*

Oh well if you haven't heard of them, I guess it's cool that they get de-verified? Because you're the ultimate verifier? Stow your shitty attitude.

As it happens I do watch Jimmy Broadbent, old Jimmers. He's a passionate, non-shithead (AFAIK) creator. So do hundreds of thousands of others, so your whole post is dopey.

This seems like it would disqualify most non-company/famous person channels from being verified.

What was the problem they were trying to solve with this change? Too many people were verified?

Does the verified tag on YouTube really matter, like, you can just look at the sub count and see if they're the real one lol

The new verification procedure is to ensure you are of questionable reputation regarding racism, human rights and conspiracy theories so you are inline with the rest of Youtube policies.

Not a gaming channel but one of my favorite channels was hit with the same thing and they have nearly 2 million subscribers.

What changed in the eligibility criteria? How did people get verified before?

This sounds like if you're not a celebrity or one of the top YT channels then you can't get verified at all

Same got hit. This is also on the heels of something else going on in the background where a number of my vids are not only demonotized but if they are ever monotized they are instantly adult restricted. Even prior to going live. Been happening for about 4 months now.

Also their email states to go to a particular link to fight the change then the page says you can't fight it lol. If you go to help and put in a ticket they actually ask clearly if its about verification and state there again you can't fight it.

Sounds like they're going to only hand them out to celebrities and creators that are just super popular and have name recognition outside of Youtube.

Yeah I don't get the changes at all. Why ask for a big presence outside of YouTube to get verified... on YouTube?
It makes complete sense, you are well-known outside of YT, so when people see the check on YT they instantly know it's you, what's stupid is taking it away from people who already had it and not being clear about what being well-known means.

Amazing that there's no process to request verification, only to appeal getting unverified.

So basically it's YouTube picking and choosing who they want to be verified.

so instead of a videogame-style achievement, youtube verification is going to be more like twitter verification? that sounds fine to me.

Looks like they are doing this so that they can have a separation between "this subscriber has huge numbers, is killing the algorithm, etc" and "we, YouTube, co-sign this content *because* this subscriber has huge numbers, is killing the algorithm, etc".

The next time some big YouTube name does some questionable shit, they can say it wasn't a verified channel, and if it's someone big like PewDiePie, they don't have to bear the brunt of the blame/shame for it because *all media* co-signed the rise of that creator.

...or they're just trying to fuck creators, lol

That's ridiculous. Jimmy Broadbent is one of the best things on gaming youtube, also like one of the biggest sim racing channels.
