Just saw an unboxing of the Series X, and it seems that ray tracing isn't listed as a feature on the box? Wonder why that is, are the boxes the same in every country? Maybe regional differences? Seems like a too important feature of this gen to just not mention it.

I don't think there is reason behind it. Both consoles are very much capable of RT with RDNA2. Just marketing decisions.

It's a graphics rendering aspect. Like shading, anti-aliasing, z-depth buffer... no strong need to market on consumer packaging (only a percentage would know what it actually meant).

If you care about it, you know about it already.

And yeah, past consoles never advertised they could do anti-aliasing etc on the box.

Where as variable rate shading is all the kids talk about on the playground right now.

The hilarious XSX doesn't have ray tracing conspiracy needs to stop though.

Don't think the original Xbox had bump-mapping advertised together with the hard drive.

It's a great graphical feature supported but not something I'd necessarily put on the box.

Why would they mention it ? They don't mention the technical specs on the box. You won't see mention of VRS, Mesh Shading or other stuff like this.

Xbox Velocity Architecture is a different matter as it's a lot more tangible and have links with the storage capacity/technology.

VRR has integration implications though as you can then take use of VRR-capable TV's & monitors.

Their box is full of marketing buzzwords that have little-to-no tangible impact to consumers. VRR, 8K HDR, "Velocity Architecture", 120FPS and 1TB SSD are all brought up... there's literally no reason for them not to include Ray Tracing on the box if they're naming any of that stuff, especially the "velocity architecture", which might as well be Microsoft's "blast processing" considering it's about as relevant to consumers as that was.

That would be like a BluRay player promising you explosions and car chases on its packaging.

I think all the featires mentioned on the box are mostly harwdare related features, meaning stuff that is directly related to harwdare either on the console like velocity and SSD or HDMI 2.1 features, 4K120FPS 8K, 4K bluray, HDR so when someone gets it he knows what he needs from a TV or SSD. Ray tracing while still being hardware based, is just tied to the local softwares which are games and devs could apply them or not and it's a graphical setting or process like VRS or mesh shader or even PBR so they don't need to mention it on the box of the actual device. If they want, they can mention it per game.

We have games confirming ray tracing on Xbox Series X and S.

And OP is concerned because there's no mention in the packaging

Lol

We know that XSX has some form of ray tracing, but why didn't they put it on the box? It's one of the big features of this gen, a paradigm change. It's kind of bizarre to not mention this as a feature.
The big change is SSD this gen. And guess what, these three letters are on the box.
Edit: also, what is "some form of ray tracing", lol.

It's not bizarre. This thread is a great example of manufactured concern. What's on the box.... that's what is left to criticize so close to release?

95% of people buying the console dont know what ray tracing is.

With Velocity Architecture that little blurb at least can explain what it is.

I have hard time figuring what's the point of this thread. Some of the XSX games will have RT, some of them don't. Is it really that concerning, strange etc. if the retail box doesn't mention this.

Ray Trace and Michael Transaction do not belong on the back of the box. Those are more optional game specific features.

"some form"? Really? Please tell me you aren't one of those believing Xbox has RDNA1 GPU with some enhancements to support some form of RT. Please, tell me you are not one of those guys. I beg you.

Xbox and PS use RDNA2. End of story.

VRR (variable refresh rate) is a functionality you can see on TVs or monitors so they put it on the box.
