Even without the benefit of the disc drive (and access to cheap Xbox 360/Xbox One games that will go sale from November onwards), the size, look and library of the Series S can be very compelling.
And just imagine a year from now. Microsoft will start bundling the console with two or three games and a three month Xbox Game Pass subscription. By then, you'll have a new year's worth of FIFA, Madden and other EA games courtesy of the EA Play integration. That's a powerful retail pitch, and the sheer volume of games even gives Xbox ammunition when competing against something like the Nintendo Switch.
Phil Spencer's core pitch as the head of Xbox has been the expansion of the gaming market, beyond its traditional core audiences. That doesn't just mean in avenues that include features like streaming games to your phone -- which we can't test in Australia at the time of writing -- but also by making gaming more accessible at different price points.
https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2020-xbox-series-x-console-reviewThe lack of games, combined with late arrival of a retail console, means we won't be reviewing the junior Series hardware today
I saw shortly after posting it, maybe mods will merge this one with the XSX threads.
Microsoft has promised that Xbox Series S game install sizes will be around 30 percent smaller than the Series X, but I've noticed Gears 5 is 76.4GB on both the Series S and Series X.
Digital Foundry will review on a later date:

I think everyone got the XSS very late compared to the XSX, which was sent to outlets a month ago.So they didn't get a retail copy of Series S like everyone did? That's rather odd
Yeah I'm one of those people, PS5 will be my main console but I'll probably buy an S as soon the first Arkane exclusive game comes out. What is interesting about the S is that the price can be almost impulse buy territory, it wouldn't surprise me to see many people buy an S just for Starfield, for example.
I think this is a great option for those of us with kids getting into gaming. My son is still too young, but if I was looking to add a second console for him, as someone already in the Xbox ecosystem, this would be a great addition.
Options are great. More fun for everyone.
This is not true. The IGN review shows that Gears is only 55.1 on the Series S.Seems this size issue isn't just a problem with third-party as we learnt yesterday with the new Call of Duty:

Edit: Throw questions at me if you want, I'll answer as many as I can :)
Glad to see the noise level is still very low, that was one of my concerns looking at this tiny console.
Everything I've thrown at it so far has hit pretty much a solid 60. I'm not in a position to be able to pixel-count, sadly. I also don't have RDR2 on Xbox. But, given performance of other titles, I'd not worry at all.How is RDR2 and others old gen games on Series S? I mean they are on 900p Xbox One S base resolution or upscaled to 1080p?
Best review so far with loading tests, framerate tests, noise and heat tests etc
Exactly. What is interesting about the S is that the price can be almost impulse buy territory, it wouldn't surprise me to see many people buy an S just for Starfield, for example.
Then heads off to you. Great job. :)

On the other hand FH4 *is* smaller on XSS.Seems this size issue isn't just a problem with third-party as we learnt yesterday with the new Call of Duty:
(FWIW, I'm not MVG - my review is in the OP)
Regarding quick resume: do we know the size allocation? So for bc games you can use quick resume with more games? And what about 360 games? Also you don't happen to own Dark Souls 1 on my 360? ...*comes in to post his review*

Also, written review is here if you'd prefer to read words rather than watch video that kept me awake until TWO IN THE GODDAMN MORNING :P https://www.nextgenbase.com/xbox-series-s-review/

Thanks! One last thing: Gamepass trial was included? I heard it's not a code anymore you have to enter but you redeem it somewhere in the settings?Size allocation - not sure. I would suspect it dynamically uses whatever you've got free on your drive.
360 games - work without problems. Played through a few and quick resume looked like it worked fine.
And sadly not, not a Souls fan!
Series S still get for some games extra upgrades. Like that 60fps Fallout 4. :)I've been out of it for a while with Xbox and I'm sorry if this has been discussed to death. BUT...
I have a xbox one S and primarily use it for BC 360 games. Is there any benefit to upgrading to the series S for this purpose?

Ah, okay. Thanks, will find out next Tuesday! Not sure on that - full disclosure, MS included a GP subscription in the review pack, so it was already redeemed for me
probably digital direct and its included in the console. Need to activate it in the settingsThanks! One last thing: Gamepass trial was included? I heard it's not a code anymore you have to enter but you redeem it somewhere in the settings?

I think you wiill have the same ugprades as the XSX(Load times, improved textures, auto-hdr etc) minus 4K for obvious reasons.Do we have info on how the Series S is gonna run 360 games, compared to the one S or One X?
And despite some concerns about storage, I will say this: the Series S has made me more excited for console gaming than I have been in a very long time
Any 360 games that got One X enhancements will run at 1440p. I believe the remaining 360 titles will run at 720p on all Xboxes.Do we have info on how the Series S is gonna run 360 games, compared to the one S or One X?
