For the longest time I thought I was the originator of 'xbone' on the internet.

So tonight I did some personal research, and the first time I used 'xbone' was at 4:38 pm est on May 21st, 2013. The Xbox One reveal event was on May 21st 2013, starting at 1pm est and ending at 2:04 est.

Forbes article with real time analysis of the reveal event

edit: and for fun, here's a kotaku article discussing the same thing as OP, 7 years earlier.

I know you couldn't have forseen this happening, but congrats on creating an awkward, boring gamer joke that looks set to live for at least a decade.

I didn't even know that Xbox One, the all in one entertainment system by Microsoft, even had a shorthand name.

It still makes me laugh that Phil Spencer made OG Xbox work - even while he was like "my marketing team hates that I call it this" lolll

I always type out Xbox One because every single abbreviation always felt awkward to me for some reason. No, it doesn't make sense. XB1 or XBO if I had to pick one, I guess?

How I abbreviate each generation of Xbox:

Xbox | Xbox Classic (it depends on the context of the conversation - I usually go with the latter just to be safe)
XB360
XB1

It's Xbox Series that I'm undecided about - I'm stuck between XS and XBS.

i feel like some marketing genius saw whatt happened with the Wii/Wii U low info consumer confusion and thought how can we make that a positive.

Anyways, 2-3 letters, i feel like the 2-3 years of cross compatibile games fall into 4 tiers
X1 - xbox one (or s, does it matter? same output ) 1080p only
X1x - xbox one x - 4k but last gen
XSX - xbox series x - 4k max
XSS - xbox series S - 4k, but made for 1440p

Did it annoy anyone else that Gamecube was GCN? As a younger lad, I was confused when Gamespot.com first added the GCN category to the top of their website because...what the hell is a Gamecube Nintendo?

I have always read it as an abbreviation for "GameCube Network." Even though I know that just ain't it at all. Drives me nuts.

I think ultimately I've ended up saying X1, X1S, X1X, XSS and XSX. I don't think I'd ever say XS though to refer to both new Xbox consoles.

Remember around the initial reveal of the console and they wanted people to refer to it as The One

Either X1/XB1, X1S/XB1S, X1X/XB1X.

XSS/XSX only.

Anything other than XSX for Series X is straight up wrong. You have people thinking they're being funny calling it XSeX, SeXbox, etc. If you do that...stop it.

"Xbone" always struck me as goofy and primarily meant as dismissiveness of the console, because it's such a forced truncation to get the result you want. It's like the people who tried to make "Xbox SeX" a thing for a while. Who truncates "Series" as "Se", like it's on the Periodic Table?

So you truncate "Xbox" to "Xb", but then keep the full "One"? And you don't say it as two different words like "Ecks-bee One", you say "Ecks-bone"?

I just use XB1, X1X, XSS, and XSX.
