Yep, I'll admit I was scoffing at the MSFT claim it was the biggest growing market - but these last few weeks shows demand really is high there and the initial low numbers were purely inventory related so shows what I know. A big Japan studio acquisition hopefully on the cards soon enough
I agree. they need to build a formidable Xbox team in Japan.. Xbox needs to have a presence over there to handle localizations, manage 3P relationships and marketing. I think they will acquire a huge publisher down the road.

Did a big game come out in Japan last week for the system? Was Scarlet Nexus a worldwide launch, then?

Also, what were previous weeks in comparison?

Weird how different the vibe is in threads about Sony acquisitions compared to MS ones.

Phil said in March (at the Bethesda roundtable) that Tango was a "great first step" for a larger first-party presence in Japan and in the last interview with IGN, he said that geographical diversity was an area where they still have work to do, so who knows what could happen in future years.

Suggestion for the next OT Turning Japanese

I like this, but I still think "23 and Me" is extra funny in a world where future acquisitions are likely to occur in the lifespan of the thread.

Tangential, but my favorite thing about this song is that when it came out in the US, American audiences just assumed "turning Japanese" meant squinting your eyes and interpreted the song as both perverted and kind of racist, but the original intention of it was just like "What's the farthest thing from British? Japans pretty different right?" (which, there's still a conversation to be had about otherism here, but it's not so blatantly racist)

So American audiences in the 80s assumed the song was racist and perverted, but only because they were so racist that their first thought when they heard "Japanese" was "squinty eyes".

These include both S and X right? I think these are decent numbers considering the uphill battle the Japanese market presents. I hope they have even more successes.

23 and Me is also the name of a consumer genetics company. No relevance to gaming, but thought it was noteworthy to point out (only because I work in the industry).

Feel like we need a Yakuza thingy in the OT. Yakuza is basically a MS franchise now lmao.

Nixxas makes a lot of sense for Sony in the context of them expanding to PC, and also likely not wanting the studios who actually make the games, concern themselves with porting efforts, but yeah........one of the benefits being acquired by Microsoft is you are literally being acquired by the windows company.

It doesn't get much better than that in terms of support lol.

The vibe is exactly the same as Double Fine and compulsion games getting acquired.

Anytime a big name gets bought there will be a bit more fallout.
Exactly. It's a small developer that mostly does ports. It's not even in the same league as the Obsidian acquisition was, much less the Zenimax one. People would care about big studios and IPs.

That's just how Xbox does boxes. It reads as an Xbox One Game playable on Series X. It's kinda confusing.
But.. there are plenty of boxes that don't show Series X|S at all if they're not optimized. And if it IS a native version, then why wouldn't they put PS5 on it. That seems odd still..

Sony really did good by buying à support studio. I really think that Microsoft should have done this with saber too.
I was confused what you were talking about and now I'm sad they got Nixxes :( I mean, not that MS really needs them to stay multiplat. But they did a pretty good job with the One X port of Rise of the TR. This seems to me clearly a PC move more than anything, I'm glad to see Sony continuing down the path of supporting PC in a more full and deliberate capacity now. So uh. Sony gonna take the next step and just acquire Square, now that they nabbed their support partner? XD

All that said, generally, MS doesn't need support studios as they have unlimited contractor capacity. But.. I do agree it's not bad to have a flexible studio that can do everything - but, maybe that's what Coalition and Turn 10 are already doing, really. Anyway, it's not Saber that I'm sad they let get away to Embracer.. it's 4A :<

Yea.. I don't know about that logic. Brad was saying something is coming to everyone. And since he's an insider lead or whatever, it's probably a platform feature. And Edge WOULD make sense. But Mercury isn't really.. the edge.. of anything..
poster-vector-solar-system.jpg

Mercury inner edge.
Pluto outer edge.

The new Edge browser is in insider testing for quite some time now. Brad kept saying "something coming to all consoles", clearly implying it's something that is already available to Insiders. I'm pretty sure it's that.

They won't release completely new platform features that have not been tested within the Insider rings to everyone from one day to the next. The new Edge browser is one of the currently last remaining features in the Insider rings not available to everyone.

I agree with you about Edge :p. But I really don't think there's an "inner edge of the solar system". It, by definition, must start at the Sun. There's an inner edge of the habitable zone, maybe. But when we talk about edge of the solar system, it's always about the outer edge.

(Which is why this announcement is actually clearly that Edge is as far away as we could imagine from release, and the thing that is coming to everyone today is immeasurable disappointment. ^^)

It's just a fun Twitter tease I guess. I don't think he's thinking about it that deep :)

My take is that the majority of Sony's first-party doesn't have experience doing multiplat development for PC, and as they look to either publish their first-party day 1 on PC or accelerate the pace of the PC ports it makes sense to bring in Nixxas' PC port capabilities.

Yea.. MS obviously already has the most PC port capability in house already. That said, Nixxes is still kind of an interesting choice. You wouldn't expect they'd have the bandwidth to do THAT much support, per se. And they've only worked with SE's western properties. They've not been particularly prolific nor lauded for insane quality of ports, either (though, generally, I think they've done pretty well). It is a shame that Avengers did so poorly.. or maybe Nixxes wouldn't even be in this position. That was their first big non-port project as a support studoio.

I was thinking the same thing, in terms of them being kinda like putting a band-aid on a gaping wound.

But it could be a long-term strategy, where they'll leverage the tools and procedures of Nixxes and build out that team and clone them as they organically grow similar studios / capabilities in their existing first party.
