Just canceled my Xbox gold subscription and my game pass runs out on 7/12. Wanted to check before I re-up if the upgrade trick is still possible and if it's as simple as buy 3 years of Gold -> upgrade to one month of Gamepass Ultimate -> all the Gold converts?

Correct, it should still work just fine.

I'm a bit confused. I don't have an Xbox, I do have a PC. Is the PC Game Pass the best choice for me? It seems to have everything Xbox Game Pass does except no option to play on an Xbox, which obviously doesn't matter to me.

Yep, so long as you don't have any desire to do cloud streaming, then PC Gamepass is better for your use case than Ultimate.

If you're gonna subscribe for a longer period then the Gold conversion trick is cheaper than PC game pass.

You also get some perks (usually in game items and trials for other services), and cloud gaming. If those two things don't matter to you then yes PC Gamepass is all you need

you need to wait until your gp subscription expires, some say its better to wait a day just in case, and then buy up to 3 years of gold and 1 gpu month to convert it all to 3 years of gpu

You can also commit highway robbery by doing the (unlimited) $1 promo every time it shows up in the Xbox app on PC. 😎

Finally finished Elden Ring that I started at launch. Welp, outside of some relevant Game Pass Ultimate Perks I used for GaaS I play, that was about half a year of underused Game Pass. Time to attempt to catch up.

Desperately need to play Bugsnax. Guardians of the Galaxy too. Anything that's the antithesis of a Souls!

I guess I shoulda done that but I grabbed the $1 PC Game Pass I saw on the app and was happy with that! I'll let it lapse at the end of the month and see if I can nab it for $1 again next month 😏

No, you're totally fine - that's exactly how it works! Make sure to turn off auto-renew and check the promo again after your sub runs out next month😁

Ha, I still miss two trophies but I'm also somewhat done with the game for now. Initially wanted to also get it for PS5 but it's just so huge.

Need to see what I missed since ER's release. Any recommended highlights I need to look at?

I wonder if they have data showing that putting titles in their blog post images doesn't really matter, or if they're actively trying to collect data on that...because yea, otherwise it's very bizarre how they've kinda left a good number of games off those lists as of late. And then putting games on there that are returning titles, when in the past returning titles didn't get shown. And hell, then by "padding out" the images with Cloud additions...it's just weird. You've got people complaining that GP hasn't been as good lately based on those individual threads made specifically because of these Tuesday blog posts...then, as usual, if you actually tally up all the releases in a given month, GP is still unbelievable with both major posts and all the other games left off those lists. It just feels like for as good as their marketing is with it overall, actually expressing what is and isn't releasing on it has been so oddly iffy for the last few months. Like I said, I suspect it doesn't matter. Most are probably just going to the New Releases section on their Xbox to see what's there, and if you're on a place like this, it's a sorta, "If you know, you know" type deal.

But I mean, like, if you're the dev behind Garden Story...are you feeling some sort of way about that?

The Tuesday posts and the graphic are more important for people that are not subbed but might be considering it

The last two posts have missed games off for some reason, so if that's all you're seeing from GP on the outside, then the new additions to GP looks worse than they actually are

It's just weird because it seems unbelievable they can't get all their ducks in a row to update a graphic correctly. There isn't even a fixed date so they're not even working to a fixed deadline

I feel dumb asking this, but I'm a bit unclear on one aspect of the XBL Gold > Game Pass Ultimate upgrade.

For existing GP subscribers I believe the process is:

- Buy 3 years of Gold
- Pay for 1 month of Game Pass Ultimate which will convert the 3 years to GPU too.

My issue is, wouldn't that be 37 months in total? I believe the cap is 36 months, so do you have to wait a month after stacking Gold before you can upgrade to GPU?

I think the conversion negates the extra month.

Below is a look at how Game Pass has affected my spending habits - and also how it has increased the number of Japanese games I play (you'll see in the list, I've played a lot more Japanese games in 2021-2022 thanks to Yakuza and Spike Chunsoft). I'm still playing games that I ABSOLUTELY love. But I'm spending much less money. Game Pass is continuing to have incredible games (for my tastes).

I'll start with 2018. I'll highlight Game Pass games in RED (unless I own the game). If a game isn't highlighted in Red, it means a) I bought it digitally, or b) I bought it on disc - regardless of its Game Pass status.

I love narrative adventure games. Western RPGs. Visual novels. Puzzle games. I feel like from 2018 to present day I've continued to play those types of games. But I've been able to dramatically reduce my spending while still enjoying so many games each year. There is still LOTS of work to do, especially with respect to Japanese games that continue to skip Xbox. But I think Microsoft deserves credit for what they've done with the service.

  1. Games I played in 2018:
    1. Assassin's Creed: Origins (digital and disc)

DJMax really is proof that Xbox is just a PC lmao, the game really thinks you're on a PC when playing there, you can change anti aliasing, the tutorial keeps mentioning the keyboard and not the controller and best of all, you can quit the game to the dashboard from the title screen.

EDIT: Ah the PC version installs an anticheat by default, cool beans (Xigncode3)

Road 96 is the kind of game you need to play like 10 times to experience everything then.

Also, the dialogue sounds weird to me? Like people are underwater or in a different room?

This is super cool! The absolutely crazy thing is how many of those games you didn't play on Game Pass have nevertheles been on Game Pass, as well. Even your 2018 list has maybe 4-5 games that have never been on GP. It's crazy and when I started to make lists like this, I quickly realized that there weren't actually as many games that have entirely missed GP as I had thought lol. That's even true for 2022, where like some 30%+ of all notable games dated for 2022 and releasing on Xbox are already announced for GP. It's honestly staggering.

Wow, Far Cry 5 seems really basic. Only played for an hour and it's just save people, blow up stuff. Rinse and repeat. The gunplay seems basic too.

But the opening cinematic is straight fire tho

You go X and find Y or go to X and kill Y, but as you do that you make progress towards unlocking main story missions, which are more linear and story focused

However, some of the story missions are bad and all the boss fights suck

I enjoyed the game overall, though the story is ass, and I think 3 and 4 are better games overall

I love Game Pass. Buying games seems like a huge waste of money now lol. I've become super selective with my buying habits ☺️

Same, I checked my games log recently and found that I've beaten 39 games from GP since the start of 2021, and mostly due to MS rewards points I've only spent about £20 on games so far this year, when most years it's a few hundred a year at least

I've spent like £15 during the last two years thanks to game pass. Totally changed how I view buying games now.

If you love narrative adventure games then please play THE FORGOTTEN CITY asap!! Didn't find that in your list (unless I missed it lol)

100% agree, it's my favorite game from last year. I've been keeping it on my XSX just to get a few stray achievements for Microsoft Rewards. And if you trust the leave dates accidently leaked on PC, it's schedule to leave Game Pass in November:

Is Mirrors Edge: Catalyst worth playing if you liked the first game?
It's a structurally very, very different game. I think it's worth giving it a try, but don't force yourself to do everything because the game is not really built to be completed - or indeed, experienced - the same way as before. It's not UNFUN, but it lacks something from the first, for sure (heart and story, perhaps, for one thing). But definitely worth a try, at least.

DJMax seems to be unplayable on a controller lol

Also they left some keys from the pc version on xbox during the tutorial.
I tried it and didn't like how the guide for which button equals which note disappears like 3 seconds into a song, expecting you to memorise it. What's the point in that?

Shame as it looked like the game could have been a good rhythm game otherwise.
