Dead Rising 2 Off The Record was peak Dead Rising. Frank was great in that game.

DR4 was terrible. Combat, these new "maniacs" and this new Frank were all garbage.
Also the people you rescue you don't need to proceed them, just kill a few zombie and they drop loot and disappeared. So baffling to do this. They tried so hard to make the game mainstream and in the end they killed what makes Dead Rising in this DR4.

It got rid of everything that made the previous games fun, basically it just didn't feel like Dead Rising to me.
DR3 already started doing that but it still had some fun elements and the weapon twist was nice, DR4 while keeping that twist got rid of freaks, and a lot of other things.

The first DR game is still the best because of its attention to detail, I think it's one of the most interactive games ever made even today. And funny enough it still holds up visually because of its clean style and high quality animations and post processing. The later games actually took a step back in this area. Yes it plays a bit clunky but all DR games are clunky af to begin with.

Games from mid 2000s have this experimental quality to them with lots of physics based interaction, you see it in Crysis, you see it in Farcry 2 etc. The sequels took a step back in this area because newer games focused on the overall experience and narrative more than tiny details for world consistency. While it worked when it came to games like Farcry 3 (as it was a massive massive success). It absolutely doesn't in case of Dead Rising, because the point of Dead Rising is playing around the world and the tools in it, so it pretty much requires careful attention to detail that the first game had and with it the game feels...emptier. It was still kind of ok in DR2 and to some extent in DR3 due to the new additions but DR4 shows what happens when you get rid of all of that. It just becomes a husk of a game.

The first game is a legit classic. It's different in tone from all the others because there's a sense of urgency and horror to go with te goofiness that wasn't replicated by any of the sequels. It's one of my fav games of the PS360 gen and the first game to show what was now possible with the hardware. DR2 is goodish and the only one which tried to follow that tone but still didn't entirely succeed. All the others went full steam ahead with the zaniness and goof but forgot how important the horror part was to counter balance and that's were they lost me. As far as gameplay goes the last games were one step forward and a hundred backwards, watch this video to get the full picture on how much they've phoned it in with the physics engine, interactivity and really making you feel a part of the DR world:

edit: there you go, softtack
has posted it already but really it's illuminating

This puts things into perspective.

DR 3 was imo by far the best launch game this gen, it was great fun. But 4 was a huge step back.

The series was always very janky but getting rid of hoards of zombies or navigating between them using wacky items was at least kinda fun up until the 3rd game. I could not stand the 4th one, it may have been acceptable in 2006 but not today. It's so low quality and unpleasant.

I really enjoyed 4. I felt like the second and third games jettisoned a lot of the camp and silliness of the first one whereas 4 embraced that and had a lot of cheese. Some good, some not so good, but overall I thought it was a return to the form of the first game.

The start of the decline of this series was when they capitulated to the whiners and got rid of the timer. That was the soul of Dead Rising.

It's crazy too because Blue Castle were able to make a faithful and pretty good sequel in DR2 and OTR, then they just went full westernization/casualization route and torpedoed the series into the trash.

As a massive fan of the series, I ultimately did end up enjoying DR4 for what it was, but the whole thing feels largely unecessary as a product, not to mention it killed Capcom Vancouver which sucks because I think they've done a consistently good job with the series since 2.

The way DR3 ended really felt like the devs tying up everything with a nice little bow with the intention to move onto something else for awhile, but 4 doesn't really know if it wants to be a reboot or a sequel and it's just really messy in that regard. Frank West is back, but he looks and sounds different, it's set in the town from the first game but totally rebuilt with a brand new mall. The story is largely just trying to justify its own existence and its the only game in the series that I feel is putting comedy first, as opposed to the other games which had campy and comedic elements expressed through gameplay but largely played themselves pretty straight.

Despite a lot of asset reuse from the previous game, running around slaughtering zombies is still pretty fun, and the game tries to mix the interior locations of the first 2 games with the more open city areas of the 3rd to decent amount of success. The Christmas theme works well too in a Shane Black sort of way, but when your big back of the box selling point is just a timed power up exo-suit that is barely any fun to use then maybe things went wrong somewhere.

The Frank's Big Package update added a few new unique survivors to rescue who had specific rescue missions/requirements.

I know a lot of folks like to point to the removal of the timer and frank being annoying as shit as examples of What Went Wrong, but I would like to add some thoughts:

In most Dead Risings, when living human enemies show up they're presented as a major challenge compared to the faceless zombie hordes, whether they be in the form of psychopath boss fights or special forces agents or whatever. They represent an escalation of conflict. In Dead Rising 4 though, you run into looters or Obscuris on every block. Living enemies are a constant presence, and by the final day it's basically a war zone between all these living enemies, but unlike say Dead Rising 1's finale with all the special agents running around the mall, it's not actually a challenge or anything, you just kind of.... drive past them, the way you've been driving past them this whole time.

But that brings me to my next point: A lot of y'all criticize the over-reliance on Wacky Combo Weapons, but to me DR4's issue was an increased reliance on conventional guns. There are Obscuris soldiers parked on every block, and they always drop guns, and if you defeat all of them you can raid their vans to get even more guns. Frank has to fight his way through multiple military bases, but don't worry, most of them have AK-47s and whatever just laying on tables for him to pick up so he can murder all these special forces people! To me this make the tone of the game feel way more mainstream than removing the timer.

(Along those same lines: The prevalence of Med Kits as healing items really kind of changes the tone of the game a bit, doesn't it? It kind of loses some of the charm)

On the positive side: Not including all the gross sexual assault/threat of sexual assault/"take upskirt shots of this female character to get exp!" stuff was a huge improvement.

Yep it is a really terrible game, among the worst I have played this generation. The removal of the timer and any difficulty is the least of this game's problems: it's an ugly looking game (how were those survivor models judged to be acceptable?), with clunky mechanics, tons of bugs that halt progress and bad writing. The third game had its issues but it was an okay game of Zombie Musou if you can turn your brain off and have some dumb fun but DR4 is irredeemably god awful.

This was the last game before Capcom's redemption arc began really.

Agreed. Played the game last year over 2 days on Christmas. The game lost what made the first special. No timer, no challenge, lack of interesting location. It was was just brain dead mash button going from one end of the map to the next. Instead they focused on more dumb weapons. Who asked for a mech suit? They went in the wrong direction with the series. Here's hoping they can bring the series back with a reboot.

as far as i can tell the survivor models are literally just the zombie models lol

(the ps4 version also has a cool bug that has a higher chance of corrupting your save data the further you play, making the game unplayable because it'll crash whenever it tries to autosave or you try to open a menu)

((actually, now that i think about it, "there's literally no way to manually save" is also something that we should criticize this trainwreck for))

That's one of the funnest fighting games I've ever played.
There are a lot of people who had/and still have a ton of fun playing SFV, but that still doesn't change the fact that SFV hurt Capcom's image (at the very least in the first year). Same thing with MvC:I regardless of how much fun you or others I'm sure have had with the game.

Willing to wager that most people who chafed against the first game's idiosyncrasies didn't play subsequent entries. First game was sublime, second was lightning in a bottle considering the studio did its damndest to snuff out the series' personality thereafter.

I still don't own the third and fourth entries. DR1, DR2, Case Zero, Case West, and DR2:OTR are the extent of my familiarity with the series.

The only one I finished was DR3, so I expect to like DR4 if I ever get around to it (unlikely).

whoa there aren't psychos???

They're called Maniacs in DR4. Instead of having cutscenes and unique boss fights, they're basically glorified generic enemies who occasionally have a gimmick like making you fight waves of other generic enemies. Most of them are wearing clothing pieces that Frank himself can pick up.

There are human beings who you can defeat, but they're not unique and don't have cutscenes or special drops.

They were given special unique weapons in a post-launch update that they'll drop upon defeat and that you can purchase dupes of in the Shelters.

I enjoyed exploring the mall but the game goes downhill once you leave it, the rest of the town is so uninteresting.

I am a huge fan of the series and Dead Rising 4 failed to deliver the Dead Rising experience for me, it wasn't a bad zombie game but it wasn't a great Dead Rising game.

I liked the open world but it was just so easy, I liked the systems of the first game and the pressure and panic of the timer counting down effecting your decisions yet keeping you focussed on the end goal.

off The Record is well worth checking out if you haven't played it.

and yes the Crowbcat video highlights the problems with the series perfectly

Bumping this thread because I just finished Dead Rising 3 for the second time and had a ball, then checked the store to find that the Dead Rising triple pack is on sale for $15 and with 4 on game pass I figure I'd just play the shit out of the series until I finish them or I get sick of them.

3 is so underrated. The game is prettier than I remember and had good IQ despite being 720p. The not-LA location mixed with zombie horror made it feel tonally similar to 80's low budget horror which made me like the setting more than the mall and casino locations. The city map is surprisingly intricate and I found I was doing the same route planning I remember from 1 and 2 but just on a larger scale thanks to vehicles being core to traversal. The darker tone put me off at first, but as the story progresses it gets sillier and Nick slowly edged out Chuck as my second favorite DR protagonist thanks to his dorky aw shucks demeanor. And for what seems like a soft reboot story-wise, it ends up connecting to past games (especially Case West and DR2) pretty heavily. Finally, the huge amount of combo weapons and addition of combo vehicles along with better animations make the combat the best of the series.

If Capcom returned Dead Rising to it's roots the same way they did for Resident Evil I'd probably explode from hype. RE3 remakes extravagant heightened american stores and in-universe art and advertisements really gave me those Dead Rising mall vibes.

I'd agree with the above though, DR3 much to my surprise did in fact retain a lot of what made the originals great, even had an optional timer. You could tell it wasn't particularly designed around it like previous games but it was still there at least. DR4 by comparison doesn't even seem like a sequel to the same series.

I really enjoyed DR4. I never liked the timed restrictions on the past games. DR3 was a little more laid-back and I also enjoyed that one at the XB1 launch. The setting of 4 is also something I liked. DR4 wasn't a fantastic game, but it gave me hours of fun.

How dare you.

The adventures of Professor Hank East are some of the best in the Dead Rising series.

I'm playing the capcom mode but when I attack it keeps changing the weapons when I attack? What's with that?

classic frank west's melee attack is just him swinging random weapons (and dropping them) from dead rising 1, in capcom heroes mode you don't actually pick up weapons, instead each costume has a specific melee, ranged, and thrown attack.

I'm playing through 2 again right now and it got me thinking just how cool another classic Dead Rising game would be on next gen hardware. I enjoyed DR4 for what it was but it doesn't compare to DR/2/OTR imo.

From 'quake area to big OH.
I had a good romp in 3, and coop was a blast when it would work.

I've heard 4 is a mixed bag, with mostly negative comments. The holiday setting always looked fun to play during the season.

even from like a game development standpoint it feels like the tighter experience of dead rising 1-otr makes more development sense than the sprawling open worlds of dr3 and 4.

I want to get 4 just to play as all the guest characters

the whole franchise is on sale on steam right now for halloween (in north america)

I watch a friend stream 4 and it looked so souless. I legit love the original a great game with flaws (survivor AI) 2 and it two Case XBLA entries was really good, fixing the issues I had in the original like the ledge so much they had to get nerf in Off the Record, which is probably as good as the original. 3 is good, but when I tried to play it last year after playing 1, 2, and the two Case games I was hit with fatigue. The game changed a lot of things for the worst, as survivors for the most part just auto left upon saving so they were a non issue but the ones you met on a mission would tag along but otherwise forgettable. The bosses were still fun, but the game also screw up the time system. The default mode just jumps from event to event now instead of you waiting and saving people. I tried Nightmare mode but it feels like it way too strict for the vast map it has so it hard to do anything compare to the previous entries.

Still weird they never ported the two Case games and that multiplayer mode in 3.

I played all the games and I had a fun time with Dead Rising 4. I picked up the PC version + season pass for €25 at launch (local Win Store pricing error) and I had a lot of fun with the game over xmas. It was a great seasonal game to play during the holidays. It was a bit mindless, but there was plenty of fun to be had.
