I was just thinking back to my gaming habits throughout my childhood. I had fairly strict parents and wasn't allowed to play M-Rated games until I was around 15-16 (this was early in the 360/PS3 era.) This was an impediment at times when I missed out on games like the ps2 GTA games, Halo, etc., but it always felt like there was enough to play. I was a big Nintendo fan and Sony 1st party was also putting out quality E and T-rated games at that time.

Nowadays I feel like nearly every big AAA game is rated M. It's kind of weird to think that some kids with parents who monitor their entertainment are missing out on most major releases. How would your hobby be affected if you were limited to E and T games? Is it a problem that there aren't more high-budget games being developed that lack graphic violence?

No. Most games I played in my life are E - T

Edit: tho I would miss out on Resident Evil 4...what a loss.

I play so few M rated games, and I wish games like Tomb Raider would remove all the terrible man shooting and let me dangle from cliffs.

Honestly, M stands for immature.

I'd miss out on some good games - Platinum's would be the biggest loss.

But also I'd have less games that are hateful towards LGBT people so there's big upsides.

Almost said no because most M rated games are kind "eh", but then I remembered Devil May Cry and Bayonetta are rated M games so yeah. I need me those action games.

Not ruined but I'd definitely have to broaden my horizons. Majority of my favorite games are M rated.

I'd probably play my Switch a lot more lol.

For that to ruin everything you'd have to exclusively enjoy M rated games. Do those people actually exist as adults?

I mean, there are definitely some games where a Mature rating is questionable. But plenty of games are rated M for a reason...

I'm not a parent, but I'm inclined to agree with the decision your parents took. If you asked me right now, if I would let an 8 year old play something like GTA or DOOM; my answer would be No. I don't think that would 'ruin' a kid's access or enjoyment of the hobby.

I don't think there's a shortage of less mature games either. For one thing, there's pretty much all of Nintendo's output; and BotW (rated T) was the Consensus GOTY 2017.

Nope. Not in the slightest. There are absolutely fantastic M-rated games but there are more than a lifetime worth of masterpieces rated else.

Last M-rated game I played was Red Dead Redemption 2 and... meh.

Though to be honest I would probably miss the wackiness of GTA at some point.

Just looking at this year's games, RE2, DMC5 and Sekiro are the only three 2019 games I'm interested in that have a release date(or released already), so yea, fuck that shit. I don't go out of my way to seek M rated games, but this would just exclude way too many games for no good reason.

LOL Not at all, my only real console is Switch beyond my laptop so of course I love tons of E/T rated games.

It'd be a loss to not be able to play any more Platinum, Souls, or RE though, certainly.

I'd feel the loss of a whole lot of action games, but I'd still have a lot of puzzle games and rpgs so I think I could manage.

It would be a real bummer, but not the end of the world. My most played and favourite games have lower ratings. Crusader Kings 2, Total War: Warhammer, Stardew Valley, DiRT Rally, Mount & Blade: Warband.

At this point I think the only games this would stop me from playing would be The Elder Scrolls and The Last of Us. Everything else is E or T.

I'd live.

Pretty much, yes. I don't go out of my way to play M-rated games, it just so happens that games that appeal to my tastes happens to be M-rated for the most part.

My Parents helped me buy Mortal Kombat 1 at the age of 12 & for the longest time after wards I was Anti-Nintendo cos I thought they were mostly for kids (thanks in part to British Media & console wars) and the fact that MK1 didn't have blood on Nintendo made me stay away.

Nowadays I enjoy Nintendo games at any age rating so long as they are good

I'd be able to move on, but it'd suck because some of my favorite games of all time are rated M, and are worth a lot artistically to the medium.

Completely ruin? That's a bit extreme. But it would cut the number of games I play by half or better.

Somewhere.
It would definitely put a dent in some parts for sure (like horror stuff), but there would still be plenty to check out. I also had strict parents of what I was allowed to play (though I did slip in some M rated PS2 demos with those OPM demo discs lol).

Probably not. Then again By the time the ESRB was solidified I was pretty much of age so I have never really paid attention to the ratings, not sure what's rated what. Lots of my favorite games are probably rated M, but I am also sure a lot are E to T.

End of the day though I like games too much to stop enjoying them, though I do wish we could reach a point where mature games got the rating for complex themes and subject matter and not just copious amounts of violence and edginess.

DOOM, Deus Ex, Vice City, Gabriel Knight 2, Danganronpa, Yakuza 0, Red Dead Redemption and Mass Effect 2 were all rated M.

These are all important games to me that show off what the medium is capable of at its absolute best. I would feel robbed knowing I can't experience these titles.

No. In fact, I will be happy to see more E - T games take place of the supposedly "mature" ones. There are very few M-rated games that I personally enjoy.

Not as child but now I want to play what I want.

And if politicians would say "we forbid mature games", that would ruin gaming for me....

I don't think so? But I will say when I look back on a lot of my purchases in the last few years, it seems like they are disproportionately m rated games. I still play a decent number of E and T rated games, but it seems like the ratio has become more even or more skewed towards m rated games.

My last year or so of gaming
Metro Exodus- M
Assassins Creed Odyssey- M
Resident Evil 2- M
Dishonored 2-M
Battlefield V-M
Red Dead Redemption 2-M
Smash Bros Ultimate- E10
Spider-Man- T
God Of War-M
Kirby Star Allies- E

So... actually yeah I would have missed out on a lot of my favorite games if I couldn't play M rated games...

I agree. As a kid I would think M is kewl and stuff, but as am adult I find myself playing games for all ages. If only games that were mature handled mature topics in a mature way. Not just titalating to horny, angry teens. I wouldn't mind a decent mature erotic game or violent within reason. Nowadays these mature themes are getting better, in terms of story telling from smaller developers. However, M rated games tend to represent nothing new or interesting.

Tough to say, I don't actually know the ratings most of the time. Side effect of going digital, I guess.

It wouldn't be ruined but I'd take some heavy blows.

Most Platinum games and no Persona being the biggest losses.

I can't even remember the last time I played an M-rated game. It's not like I never have, but they're a very minor part of what video games are and can be.

It would probably be impacted, but not too much I'm guessing? I honestly have no idea what almost all of the games I play are rated
