If Gearbox didn't own the IP would you like to see id reboot the Duke franchise with gameplay similar to Doom 2016 and Eternal? I just feel Duke would benefit tremendously with Dooms fast action packed gameplay mixed in with his quips.

I said yes, but the truth is I can't see how it could possibly work in today's social climate. That being said, I'd be interested to see how they'd try to modernize it.

who would say "no" ?
People who want Quake?

Duke already had his reboot, it sucked.

It could work if they were self-aware about it and had Duke constantly getting dunked on.

Again though, id has better properties to reboot first.

You'd have to change quite a bit about the character and his world to modernize him and at that point you might as well make a new IP.

Duke Like Married with Children is something that I just think is left best in the past. I don't think it's possible to pull of that humor anymore.

I'd rather just have another Doom.

It's VERY hard to make a funny videogame, which would be the only real change for the game, it would shift into comedy instead of being a live action heavy metal album cover. Did anyone care about the Duke stuff in Bulletstorm? That's a great game, but adding Duke doesn't really add much (and he fits in better there).

The character has, really, like 1 actual good video game, he's not worth salvaging.

You guys are crazy!

id software would undoubtedly make an excellent (and funny) Duke game.
(as long as they keep some "They Live" references) =p

i'm trying to imagine what the writing in a trump-era duke nukem game would be like and it's making my skin crawl

duke moves to another planet in an attempt to escape his past and teach his kid how to go down the right path.

Nah, let that lame character stay dead in the 90's where he belongs. The "cool" tough guy who has sex with big fake boob porn star lookalikes and smokes cigars while shooting mutants isn't cool anymore, if it ever honestly was.

I'd like to see a new game sometime in the future, or at least a collection of all games into one. I enjoyed going through the 20th Anniversary version of Duke Nukem 3D, new levels and features were a cool addition.

Of course. I see two possible routes:

1) Keep his characterisation similar to the Duke 3D model, but treat him the way the TV show Archer treats the character of Sterling Archer.

2) Drop all the gross aspects of the character and have him be a simpler action-hero pastiche, the way he was in the first two games.

Duke already had his reboot, it sucked.

You mean Duke Forever? That was as far from a reboot as you can possibly get.

I think Duke is basically a worthless character. All his best lines aren't even his.

Duke sucks. And the only way a new Duke game would work is being self aware about how much he sucks, which I have very little faith in happening.

Fuck no. They already leaned too hard into the meme-shit with DOOM in Eternal. Doom 2016 was the best way to kind of give a wink and a nod to that side of the doom fandom, but it's clear now they want to kind of pander to that type of thing and that would be awful in Duke.

And honestly nothing of value was lost, Duke 3d was a great game because of it's gameplay, Duke itself and all the shit surrounding it as a brand can be left in the past.

Nah, Duke's a has been that wasn't that cool to begin with.

There's literally nothing you can do to make the character likable while keeping any of his old shtick.

Of course it could and I find ironic some people here saying it can't fit in a gaming world where GTA - who does stuff even more offensive than DN - and among others are huge mainstream hits lol.

It would feel dirty having id working on Duke. That would be like them making a Half Life or Unreal game. Just leave it alone.

If id revisit Quake, I'd like it to be more in line with the original and move away from the melee finisher stuff of modern Doom.

Yeah, if they were to bring him back, they'd probably need to go the Army of Darkness / Big Trouble in Little China route with him.

Either that, or give him a Mr. Torgue makeover - have him still be a loud-mouthed buffoon, but have him incongruously yelling positive messages, instead.

I'm not sure id would be the right software house for Duke's gameplay, though - Duke needs all the little fidgety things to do in the levels.

I think Duke would work if he's a satire of 80's/90's machismo like some people have mentioned already. Gameplay would be focused on interactivity with the environment since that's the main reason why most people still remember DN3D.

However, I don't think id Software should work on that game. I would rather prefer they work on a new IP or Quake remake/reboot.

Sure.

But can I get a reboot of Commander Keen first?

And no, that mobile game doesn't count, before any of you evil bastards post about that thing.

A sexist, misogynistic, crude, smug asshole who despite his plentiful and obvious negative traits somehow still manages to attract women and save the day.

Hell, H. John Benjamin would be a badass Duke.

Maybe pull an Uncharted and say "turns out Duke had a brother all along" and the brother is played by H. John Benjamin. The story could be about Benjamin's Nukem Brother being even worse than Duke, making Duke do a little introspection about himself and how he treats women.

Eh, I like Duke 3D but I don't think we need more Duke going forward and I don't think Id are the right developer for it anyway.

I'd sooner see them try a Quake reboot that takes after the original, or if we're going with pie in the sky fantasies, Hexen.
