There has been debate other the years on if Ash is an objectively good trainer or extremely lucky and often skates by on his own luck. Back in the Unova Days - a lot of pepole thought Ash was an objectively bad trainer during Unova which he frankly was but Kalos,Alola have changed pepole's veiws on Ash around and the recent Pokemon Anime protrays him as more of a mentor figure to Go and has shown easily being able to cream most if not all Pokemon Trainers. Personally i definetly would consider him a good trainer but that's my personal opinion - i would like to know what other pepole think on this subject.

Ash is obviously a good trainer. He's pulled some amazing feats in battle, but also outside of them in dangerous situations.

His performances in Johto, the Battle Frontier, Kalos and Alola are the main highlights.

To me, the greatest things about Ash aren't related to his achievements in official Pokemon League fare. He's an intensely empathetic kid who never stops caring, not only about Pokemon but the common good. He's helped to save the Pokemon world more times than James Tiberius Kirk saved the Federation and some of those trials and tribulations -- like the fight against Lysandre -- are frankly more interesting to me than stadium drama anyway.

He came closer to anyone in the Sinnoh League to beating Tobias, who was obviously using hacks. Pikachu is really impressive when he isn't jobbing, he drew with a Latios in that fight.

There are moments in the Tobias fight where you can tell Ash is clearly the better trainer, and Tobias is winning only because he has legendaries. And really, that's what matters, being a good trainer who can draw out the best in their Pokemon, as with how Sceptile clutched it out against Darkrai.

Were it not for shenanigans in show, he would likely get crushed in most battles. I'd be curious to see how viable a lot of his lineups are in games, because I recall a lot of his pokemon being unreasonably powerful given how they should stack up--Pikachu basically has plot armor and his Charizard was often pretty ridiculous.

i mean most trainers probably dont even get all 8 badges so I'd say yeah

we just hate him because he doesn't become literally the best but let's not let that meme get in the way of pokemon reality

Even setting his league win aside, he's still an excellent Trainer with a roster and a set of feats to rival anyone outside of the true elite.

If Tobias hadn't broken out the Action Replay, he'd have taken the Sinnoh league at a canter.

He's a good trainer but he fluctuates due to the nature of how the anime works. He's inconsistent.

Ash sucks and never wins anything that matters but sometimes he gets a super op Pokémon on his roster and they carry his arse.

He has the anti-plot armor. He is surprisingly a good person for someone which the pokemon universe clearly doesnt like.

Like the majority of his pokemon actually did get fully evolved.
He doesn't seem to be that consistent with his three level Pokémon, especially the starters. Bulbasaur, Bayleef, Quilava, Totodile, Oshawott, Pignite, Snivy and Squirtle are not fully evolved. Compared to Charizard, Torterra, Infernape, Inceneroar and Sceptile

On accomplishments alone he has to be one of the most, if not the most, successful trainers to ever live, but he's a choke artist for the ages.

In the context of the world in the anime he's a really good trainer.

people like to clamor about his resets when that hasn't really happened since BW. Dude is wrecking house since sm and the new series.

Ash has been a good trainer since Sinnoh. That was the point where the anime started having his final opponents in leagues be bullshit as an excuse for him to lose. They finally got over that and let him win a league.

As an aside, I'd like to say that people who try to diminish his win at Alola are dumb.

So the writers of the pokemon anime you mean? Because in a couple of weeks (episode 1101 blurb):
ash is going to get a ticket to see the Pokémon World Championships. Ash as winner of the Alola League is not invited to be in the actual matches because of course

Makes his loss in kalos even dumber. They could have let him win and it wouldn't "ruin the anime" if he kept going.

This episode is blatant set up for Ash to participate at the end of the saga. The certain encounter talked about in his bio for this saga likely happens in this episode.

I legitimately think, by now, he is a better trainer than Red (Manga). By deliberating resetting himself at each region he visits, he ensures a ever increasing selection of very strong Pokémon, some that are already able to take down legendaries by themselves.

When Ash takes part in a competition in which he allows himself to use his reserves from other regions, he is going to wreck everyone.

his performance in the battle frontier and kalos league prove that he's pretty good at worst

not Alola though, dude was against losers in that thing

Weird the way people just act like Ash vs Kukui didn't happen, or that Guzma and Gladion are somehow weak opponents.

If the new anime stops being a big fat Gen 1 fest and lets Ash use some of his old Pokemon from other regions, I'll admit he's cool

Do they do the same thing as in the games, where the Alola League isn't really a league?

Ash is wasted on competitive Pokémon battles.

Sure, sure, he does well, and finally got a trophy out of it, but consider the amount of Legendary Pokémon he's encountered, and not to mention, times he's had to save the world from or with said legends, Ash is a natural Pokémon Ranger. He doesn't even look for trouble, but he has more experience in Pokémon ranging than most actual rangers do. And this is in part due to his empathic nature, wherw he can gain the trust of nearly any Pokémon, be it a common Rattata, a Legendary, or even a Mythical Pokémon. Doesn't matter, Ash can and well get through to them or die trying. Once he actually did die trying, but that only slowed him down for a few minutes.

Is he a good trainer? Yes. Absolutely. But he's so much better when he's not battling for a championship. Considering the amount of Legendaries he can call friend, not to mention his Pikachu that is so far beyond what a Pikachu should be able to do and it's fairly easy to see that Ash's strength is befriending and raising Pokémon, not as much fighting with them, though he certainly can. In other words, he has all the strengths a Pokémon Ranger needs.

If they ever retire Ash from the show, I hope it's because he becomes a Ranger and shows up whe the world is at stake or a Legendary needs calming down. Because he's done that so many times already.

Kukui is an elite-level trainer, and Ash took him down despite Kukui having legendary back-up.

Anyone discounting Alola is being dumb- that battle is probably his single most impressive feat, and he didn't have to dip into his wider roster to do it.

Ash with an all-star team selection for appropriate rotation (Pikachu, Charizard, Snorlax, Heracross, Sceptile, Infernape, Krookodile, Greninja, Lycanroc, Incineroar) would be a match for damned near anyone.

We're all comparing Ash's results to our results from playing the games, where we always ended up champion. In that comparison, he would always fall short.
He's a great trainer who loves his Pokémon and the world he lives in. He can be kind of a doofus at times but he's a good dude.

Yeah Ash only seems like a failure when you look at it through the perspective of the games where you get your first Pokémon and become a master in like a week.

Won the Orange Islands championship, beat the Battle Frontier, runner-up in the Kalos League and champion of the Alola League. Given that he's still ten the implication is this all happened in under a year as well.

Also, dude just caught a Dragonite. Ash is great, y'all are haters.
