i just cant fathom the amount of lost potential and gpu power wasted because amd couldnt bother developing a technology like dlss, i have faith in sony tho since checkerboarding was awesome and they will hopefully continue to improve it or even move on to make a dlss equivalent technology

1527p120 standard, with optional 2160p60 mode.

Not sure I care either way.

I still get immense enjoyment out of games without having to call up Richard Leadbetter to tell me if my game is hitting some magical target that doesn't affect me in the slightest. Devs work too hard over too many years to put these things together for us, for the community to tear them down cuz "OMFG it aint 60 it's wurthless, i ain't buying this piece of shit". It completely devalues every person that worked on that project from the writers, to the directors, to the animators, down to the project managers, traffickers and community team.

*shrugs*
And I get immense motion sickness out of games when they run at 30 FPS.
Building a game which only runs at 30 FPS is what devalues the work that was put into it.

As long as there is a 60fps option, I don't care what the resolution is. 1440p, 1080p, dynamically-adjusting-p, whatever-p.

I always prefer smoothness over detail.

There are already reports of a few games hitting 4k 120hz already, Dirt for example, so I'm not sure I agree the toggle-able options will be at such a low bar.

12 tflops seems like it can power 4k/60

in cases it can't, i'd prefer dynamic res vs. locked 1440 so the game scales up to full res when mid-gen refreshes (at least for xbox)

The premise seems to be that developers of 30 fps games will consistently leave 50% of the CPU power unused so you can hit 60 fps. Best case scenario is probably either 30 fps or 30-60 fps fluctuating at a lower resolution. If you have a display with VRR then this would probably be acceptable.

Give me 1440p/60 fps as an option, I don't see why they can't do this when they aren't bound to the old jaguars CPU's

I'd have to see for myself. I can say from Xbox one to the Xbox one X the resolution felt like a generational jump. I also don't believe any first person game should have 30fps. I'm somewhat needing examples. I'd certainly try both modes.

I've posted this in a few other similar threads, but here's my thoughts on what the best simple options for console games would be:
  • Framerate: Locked or unlocked. Option to lock the framerate to a lower solid level (30 fps for example) or let it run wild. This would also benefit displays capable of variable refresh rate (VRR) and 120hz refresh rate.
  • Dynamic Resolution: Option to engage dynamic resolutions and how aggressive it is. Doom 2016 has a great implementation offering choices for how aggressively the scaling is. This would combine very nicely with the framerate option above.
  • Resolution: base (1080p or 1440p) mode or ultra HD (4K) mode (native or reconstructed). I expect most next gen games to target 4K resolutions (either natively, or through reconstruction). Having a lower resolution option, such as a 1080p mode, can offer benefits including potential for higher framerates (especially when included with unlocked framerates and VRR). This could be combined with the dynamic resolution mode in setting a min/max bounds for the DRS scaling.
With these three options together, the gameplay experience can really be tailored to how you want to play. Best visuals, best performance, or a mix. If would also help to eliminate poor performance of games, since there'd be options to change this till the experience is optimal. Games including these options would mean that future consoles (enhanced and BC capable next gen platforms) would be able to run those games better right off the bat without a patch.

This is ridiculous. Every game should be running at a minimum native 4K and 60 FPS. The Xbox One X has already proven powerful enough to run a lot of games at that resolution and I've been gaming at that resolution on my PC for the last five years.

If these new consoles are too weak to render games natively at 4K and 60 frames per second then they're dead in the water. I don't see the purpose of new consoles that only offer a PS4 Pro/Xbox One X level of performance. This "checkerboarding" nonsense ain't gonna cut it for another generation.

1440p 60fps would be my preference but I'd even settle for 1080p 60fps with better visuals.

I feel people underestimate how much you have to sacrifice for native 4k @ 60fps. That doesn't come for free, def not if you want any measurable difference between the look of current and next generation games.

Yep, echoing 1440p/60 is the sweet spot for best use of power.

Would love to see that option in most games. I'd even take 1440p with dynamic resolution that could drop lower at still hit 60 fps.

I just want the option.

For me, every released game should have two modes. Fidelity mode and performance mode

Fidelity mode = X resolution + Y framerate
Perf. Mode = X/2 resolution + Yx2 framerate.

i'd settle for losing raytracing and going down to 1080p if it meant a 60fps option for these games

4K 30fps being the only option for the majority of games would suck IMO

Options are always a good thing. I'd personally sacrifice resolution all the way down to 1080p if it meant I could play a better playing and feeling game. Not to me tiom even visually it would look better in high motion. (Also some 30 FPS games make me physically uncomfortable so it kind of doubles as an accessibility option for me)

1440p looks great and is the best sweet spot. There's a reason why PC gamers didn't move over to 4k screens and stayed at 1440, it's just not worth the downgrades in everything else just to hit a 4k res when you could stay at 1440 and get way better returns on higher FPS, higher settings and higher refresh rate monitors.

If the majority of games this generation couldn't push 4K, 60 FPS then the hardware isn't up to snuff. It's where we should be, frankly.

Are you joking? Or just have zero grasp on the cost of 4K?

We have $700 and $1000 GPUs that can barely push 4K@60fps. And yet you believe $500 consoles should be able to do it a majority of the time??

Well... in truth, even te PS3 can run something at 4K@60fps. What that something is is the question. It may be Pacman.

Of course. I would go even 1080p just to have all effects and RT on with 60fps.

IMO, resolution is a waste of resources.

I'm 100% in for giving people options. At a minimum, if your game isn't CPU bottlenecked, the least a dev could do is offer both 1440p 60fps and 4k 30fps, maybe even 4k 60fps, but I think many should also strive for 120fps at 1080p-1440p.

1440p still looks totally fine when reconstructed back up to 4k, especially with UE4's temporal resolution, and especially with DLSS 2.0. There's really not a lot of reasons these days to not offer gamers at least 60fps in console games, and in many cases maybe a 1080p-1440p 120hz version would be awesome.

4K/60 on demanding titles is a pipe dream. Even a $1000 RTX 2080 Ti dips into the 50s at 4K.

I personally would like to see the targets as follows:
Option 1: 1440p/60 w/ very high settings (should be the minimum target and supported for all titles)
Option 2: 4K/60, checkerboard or uncapped w/ medium or high settings (for your less demanding titles and titles where 60fps is a must like Call of Duty, Sports, Fighters)
Option 3: 4K/30 w/ very high settings (for your demanding titles like Assassin's Creed, Witcher, etc.)

It should also be noted that while 4K/60 may be what some want for console gaming, the vast majority of PC gamers prefer 1440p at a higher framerate.

I'll take 720p 30FPS if I get some meaningful gameplay and fresh design on anything.

I'd hope so, but at the same time, I dread at all the potential bugs that may introduce itself especially being confined to the restraints of the console vs PC. But that just comes down to QA anyway.

4K60 ideally whether it be checkerboarding or 144060 vs 4k30. Hell maybe 120fps at 1080p if it upscales well depending on the game like a competitive shooter.
Framerate is king.

1440p/60fps > 1440p/30fps/ultra graphics > 4K/30fps/good graphics
I have a 1080p TV though, so 1080p/60fps/ultra or 1080p/30fps/super ultra cgi(!) is the best option for me.

i'd rather leave it up to the dev to decide based on the goals they have.

if a solid 30fps gets me a much more complex scene at 4k or checkerboard 4k I'll have that every day of the week over a compromised game solely trying to hit 60fps for some reason

It would be great to have the option of 4k/30fps and 1440p/60fps but I don't expect most games to offer it unfortunately.

Need a 1080p 30fps option. Let's make everything look amazing. 4k is overkill and very few games need 60fps.

I'd absolutely take 1440/60. Especially if I could somehow hook my PS5 up to my 1440p/120 monitor.
