Would Rock Lee have beaten Neji had they fought during the Chunin Exams?

Rock never let Neji have a single inkling of the Gates.
He pretended to be a weakling while Gai trained him in secret.
I keep meaning to make an RTTP thread for original Naruto. I just finished a full rewatch with my son, and I hadn't seen since it originally aired. It aged way better than expected.

Rock Lee had the worst possible match up in the exams (Gaara). He would have destroyed anyone else in the exams
In the Chunin Exams, if you remove all plot armor, Rock Lee would have fucked up literally everybody, other than Gaara.

Neji is getting clapped once the gates come man out I don't wanna hear otherwise. Gaara was the worst possible opponent ever for Gated Lee.
Rock Lee wasn't even allowed to use his full power by Guy. He got chewed out for even using primary lotus against Sasuke. Its just one of those things that we don't know. Lee was only given permission to go all out when he fought Gaara.
It was also mentioned that Rock Lee never used his gates on Neji, presumably because Guy never let him
IMO Rock Lee would have won. Naruto did not end up winning thanks to any super special techniques, it was mostly raw Kyuubi power/stamina. Lee with primary lotus and his gates seems like it would have been similar enough to also overpower Neji's "ultimate" spinning defense.

Also doesn't the Byakugan and the 64 palms tech negate whatever Rock Lee was going to do?
People are sleeping on Neji. Just cause a character has shown more explosive power doesn't mean they're always the sure win - it's not Dragon Ball. Neji is less of a power house like Lee and more about deadly precision which Lee is weak against. The 8 Gates aren't even a factor in this fight because the moment Neji touches Lee, he's blocking his chakra points. No chakra flow, no 8 Gates.
Edit: Also Kidomaru exploited the Byakugan's blindspot. Lee can't do that.
Kidomaru was a hard counter to Neji. Neji is a pure close range taijutsu fighter and Kidomaru is all about range. In fact, Kidomaru stayed out of Neji's range for most of the fight because he knew Neji would wreck his shit if he got close. Lee has to get close to Neji to fight him and at that range, Lee loses imo.

Its a question of speed really. I don't think Neji wins this because Lee was moving so damn fast that even Gaara's automatic defense couldn't keep up. Theres also the fact that Neji literally had no way of knowing anything about Lee's full speed and power in advance because as stated, he simply was not allowed to show off his full abilities until the match with Gaara.
Yes, and Rock Lee surpassed him. Like, Neji couldn't believe his eyes when Gated Rock was ravaging Gaara. And I remember Lee saying that he was saving his Gates techniques for Neji. He should be grateful he didn't have to face Lee

Neji ability works directly against Lee's gates. When met with a strong defense Lee failed, Neji's precision defense is also very strong.
People always overestimating Lee's ability, not to mention its entirely self destructive and can't be sustained compared to most other abilities.

Neji's defense is nowhere as strong or as fast as a Tailed beast's power. Neji gets stomped once weights come off.

In a real match up that's not sparring neji would have blocked Lee's chakra ASAP. Means no gates. Means another L.
Neji can't do it forever, plus as kimimaro showed, neji is vulnerable if someone attacks the moment the rotation ends, which lee is fast enough to do. Lee would just have to bait neji to do a rotation.

Neji is not slow. Honestly, I think the fact that Lee got the super high budget fight against Gaara inflates people's idea of his capabilities. It makes him look faster than he is. Sasuke was able to get to Lee's speed with a month of training when just before that Lee walked all over him WITH weights. Someone of Neji's calibur can keep up with Lee and Neji is a hard counter to Lee. Lee needs to step into Neji's domain to fight him and once he does, Neji is going to block his chakra points crippling his abilities.

why would neji think to block his chakra when lee can't use ninja techniques? arrogant neji wouldn't deem it necessary to defeat him when he's beaten him in sparring before.
