I guess it's nice to dream but I don't think Xenogears is ever getting remade, I'd love it though.
Seeing as how many old IPs SquareEnix is unearthing, the kind of reception, interest and sales these remakes/remasters are getting, general interest from the gaming community and developers these days on updating old franchises I can't really see how we can rule anything out from being remade. If anything I bet we will see an update to xenogears, eventually.

Xenogears is already large-ish sprites on top of chunky polygon backgrounds with low-res textures. It is already nearly HD-2D, just raise the render resolution and you are there. No?
If the art is as good as it was for the original it could definitely work.

I would definitely not trust Square to do it right. I think whether it was 3D, HD2d or anything else it would be a visual abomination.

You could just smell the ambition and love in the first Xenogears. I can't imagine getting that kind of effort in a remake from 2022 Square.

It needs a bell of a lot more than a hd-2d treatment. It needs an entire redesign. The second disc was abysmal.
Game design wise it was horribly executed.

But I was ok with it. The game is already so massive that I was ok with a fast forward to the end disc two.

I think I prefer that then 50 more hours of gameplay.

I think I am in the minority on this one though.

I just need a port with faster text scrolling. It's so hard to replay because of how goddamn slooooooooow that shit is.

In an ideal world, they'd work with Nintendo and Monolithsoft would do a full remake, but alas here we are

I'm convinced a lot of you don't really understand what the idea behind HD-2D is or even seem to understand that the things you don't like about it have all been intentionally stylistic choices, not some "limitation", which doesn't even make sense

Its too bad they are using RPG Maker 1 to make their game. They had the option to use Little Big Planet but Sony insisted on exclusivity.

Only art rivaling xg was vagrant story.
Nothing else comes near xg sadly.
Current se Is unable to do a proper remake because It lacks a similar team, i doubt monolith would like to work to a gears remake now that they develop full 3d worlds, It Is a steep behind things they do now.

I would say in terms of the 2D sprite on 3D background games for the PS1, Breath of Fire 4 looked comparable, if not better, than Xenogears
I think thats fair.

But Bo4 went more for a cartoon look which I think took gamers like 20 more years to accept as not for babies.

That even applies to me during that gen. I was obsessed with 3D graphics and ignored a lot of good 2D games.

Xenogears was probably my fav rpg of that gen. I just loved its ambition and the story, characters, art, etc..

How would people feel about the game being split into two parts, with the second part almost entirely remade as an actual game?

OP hit the nail on the head - the game already sorta looks like it. A vastly outdated variant, of course, and with lots of pixel-based fare like Gears (translating those into on-par sprites is probably the hardest part). But yeah, I've always considered Xenogears to be - overall - the finest example for this.

I wouldn't rule it out either, but I'd also think it might only happen if they can get Nintendo involved in some way, since I don't think they'd do it without Tetsuya Takahashi and I don't think Nintendo would be keen to lend him away without benefiting.

If you were going to remake Xenogears, I think that would probably be the best way to do it. The only problem is that if the 1st game bombs, then the 2nd game never comes out or gets a drastically smaller budget and you just end up with the same problem.

I don't think that would work. The game is already infamous for being released incomplete and then you'd be asking people to buy an incomplete game again with the promise of it maybe being completed down the road. Since it's already influenced by Eva, the only way I could really see it working is if they just go the Rebuild route and part 1 deviates enough to where they could better justify it being released in multiple parts.

Nah, make it look like its anime art. You could really do some of the combinations in battle serious justice.

Finishing the second half of the original game with pretty much none of the original creative team and writers seems like a pointless endeavor to me.

If they put that much effort into it, I would want them to rework the battle system as well. By the time disc 2 in the original game started, the potential of the relatively simple combat had been thoroughly exhausted and I was pretty happy there were less battles, honestly.
