'Captain Marvel' Rises To Second Best 2nd Weekend in March with $69M+

Studios don't enjoy playing into a Disney/Marvel movie, nor do they enjoy playing in the wake of one, and with Captain Marvel staying strong with a $69.3M second weekend per Disney, most of the wide entries —Wonder Park, Captive State, and Five Feet Apart –are essentially built for those who've already taken in the Brie Larson tentpole (specifically older males, young kids and teenage women).

With that weekend result, Captain Marvel owns the second-best second frame in March after Beauty and the Beast's run two years ago, which drew $90.4M, and ahead of 2010's Alice in Wonderland ($62.7M). Friday's results of $19M put Captain Marvel past $200M with a running total by EOD of $266.2M. That figures surpasses the lifetime U.S./Canada cumes of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ($203M), Thor: Dark World ($206M), Venom ($214M), Ant-Man and The Wasp ($217M), Logan ($226M), Justice League ($229M), Doctor Strange ($233M), X-Men: Days of Future Past ($234M), X-Men: The Last Stand ($234M), Captain America: Winter Soldier ($260M) and The Amazing Spider-Man ($262M).

According to Screen Engine/ComScore's PostTrak, more women came out this weekend for Captain Marvel than last weekend, with significant jumps in the female under-25 demo (27% vs. last Saturday's 19%). Overall, females are at 47% versus last weekend's 42%. A solid four stars and 68% definite recommend in weekend 2 exit polls.

Social Media entertainment data corp RelishMix says that Captain Marvel's social media universe has jumped over 113M followers in one week to 833.8M, with the bulk of that coming from 44M YouTube views "in which fans and critics alike are debating the merits of Marvel, where she fits in with the rest of the MCU, and what worked/didn't work for them."

"The movie has also benefited from 5.8M new Facebook views across 18 new clips (not including the smart inclusion of the new Endgame trailer). And that's worth noting – it is nearly impossible to discuss Captain Marvel without also talking about how the character will fit in next month's Avengers Endgame finale to this Phase of the MCU. Now that Marvel is out, theories and discussions abound even more than they were prior to open," reports RelishMix.

That is actually a really damn impressive second week drop. 1 billion sounds achievable.

It's shocking to see how many tickets Disney bought to prop up Captain Marvel and prevent it from collapsing at the box office.

Is there a reason Captive State seems to have been completely dumped and buried?

I think Word Of Mouth and Legs will be pretty good on Captain Marvel. People that see it seem like they had a good time, and the manufactured controversy only encourages people to see it so they can sound off about it.

Nancy Drew and the Hidden Release, more like. It supposedly got a theatrical release this weekend. Somewhere. It never got a theatre count update, and now no estimate. Where is it Warner. What are you hiding?

Gloria Bell is quietly doing rather well for itself.

Apollo 11 is doing really well, continuing the strong docu trend we've seen lately.

Sony more than doubled the theatre count for Ruben Brandt, Collector and you still are refusing to go and watch it. You monsters. You absolute monsters.

Ash is Purest White opened okay-ish considering it's a film not in the English language.

The Mustang is another entry in that fabled genre of Indie films about pale dudes and horses, and it opened to the highest average, a solid $19K PTA.

Hey berzeli I can't seem to find either Nancy Drew or Ruben Brandt, Collector on the list, did they make a mistake?
Ruben is on there... just way further down the list.

Captain Marvel is having a pretty healthy trajectory it seems, first 1B film of the year with many to come, and it also takes over The Wandering Earth as the current global box office crown of 2019.

Who are you and what did you do to our usual God

And I am laughing at all the "Captain Marvel empty theater" pictures on Twitter right now.

Endgame connection aside, this confirms what didn't need confirming - Marvel Studios can lean into a diverse case & crew with unknown heroes and make them household names.

The Eternals with a woman & gay man as co-leads & Shang-Chi are going to be huge.

I would tell people to see it in theaters, the bass in certain parts of the movie is amazing

So happy for Captain Marvel. She's going to hit a billion with her Origin film, and she wasn't even introduced in earlier film either. First time people see her, and she's tearing it up.

$69 million is such a big estimate with $19 on Friday only.

$19m +
$28m (+48%)+
$21m (-25%)

That's better than most other big movie.

With both Aquaman and Captain Marvel (soon) hitting 1 Billion do you think we'll finally hear less of the "superhero movies are going to fade" arguments?

It can't help that the trailers were a horribly edited mess with random ass quotes like "I can pay the price" and other nonsense. Watching the trailers I was thinking "how the hell did John Goodman end up in a student film?"
Dumped and buried would been a step up from it's performance.
It seemed like Captive State just got no promotion at all, and was for some reason moved up from a "safe" March 29 release date to releasing immediately in the wake of a Marvel movie. Maybe the studio did not have a lot of faith in it, but it seems like someone was actively trying to sabotage the film.

Wikipedia says it was only budgeted at 25M, so Captive State actually might have done well if given the room to breath. It could have a District 9/Cloverfield Lane sort of draw.

Y'all still get so surprised when someone besides kswiston creates the thread. It's kinda funny to see.

They put some money into commercials, it's just the commercials didn't make any sense.

It's pretty crazy that by the time Avengers Endgame is in cinemas 4 of the last 5 MCU movies will have crossed the 1b mark.

I think it probably tested really poorly. Or they might have been trying for a "Cloverfield" type of marketing and just completely failed at it. Possibly both.
how come climax got a (screen) bump?
Limited release, so they start out small and then expand. For those releases the per-theatre-average (PTA) matters more than the total take.

Super happy about Captain Marvel.

For some reason I thought Five Feet Apart was a direct-to-streaming service kind of deal. I'm definitely gonna check it out since it stars Cole Sprouse and Haley Lu. It won't be coming out in theaters here though, so I'll have to wait for it to hit a streaming service anyway.
