The Universal film, which sees Ben Platt reprising his Tony-winning role, is projected to debut to approximately $10 million from 3,300 North American cinemas. It's the only new film to open nationwide this weekend. Box office tracking, even in pre-pandemic times, can be unreliable, and musicals have proven to have mixed track records in theaters, so industry experts have indicated that a start in the high single digits wouldn't be unexpected.
An opening weekend haul below $10 million isn't ideal for any major studio release. However, "Dear Evan Hansen" carries a modest $28 million production budget, meaning it doesn't need to sell as many tickets to turn a profit. That's good news, because the film has been skewered by critics (it has a 43% on Rotten Tomatoes), many of whom criticized the plot and the decision to cast the 27-year-old Platt as a high school teenager.

You'll be fine, not like you'll have crazy box office fans trolling in this thread just cause "their movie" bombed. The most recent Media Create thread on Gaming Side went places, that's all I'll say.
In the wake of being quite content with the theatrical and Paramount+ day-and-date release of Paw Patrol, the studio is putting the eOne/New Republic Pictures feature Clifford: The Big Red Dog back on the calendar for Nov. 10 in both theaters and on the ViacomCBS streaming service.
The decision is also due to the ongoing pandemic, the safety for kids 6-11–Clifford's main demo and changing consumer behavior.
It's doing really well overseas under the circumstances. I think domestic + Max numbers will determine whether it gets a sequel though. Is this good or above expectations. I went to the film in The Netherlands yesterday and I hope the film does well enough to get a sequel greenlit.
Let's hope Americans love this type of sci-fi more than Blade Runner. I loved the film and it would be such a shame to not see the whole story on the big screen. It's doing really well overseas under the circumstances. I think domestic + Max numbers will determine whether it gets a sequel though.
I'd say worldwide will determine it, and right now it's a 350 at bare minimum, upwards of 400 possible. Plus Max numbers, plus awards potential. It's doing really well overseas under the circumstances. I think domestic + Max numbers will determine whether it gets a sequel though.
Dune might recoup its production budget even before the US gets it.
$350m plus good Max numbers I think would be a good enough outcome that they could greenlight a sequel. $350m plus abysmal Max numbers I would not be as confident.I'd say worldwide will determine it, and right now it's a 350 at bare minimum, upwards of 400 possible. If it's around $350m-$400m worldwide I don't know if it'll recoup everything but if it has good Max numbers and is big at the Oscars it might get a sequel anyway.
Agreed. Dune has the potential to be a franchise that Warners can adapt in a multitude of ways/mediums for HBO Max. I for sure think it's getting a sequel. I'm also more bullish on its BO performance than most :)Yeah I think the rose of streaming changes the game a bit. If dune can pull 350-400 million WW and also perform decently HBO max that's a pretty solid result.
Also I think prestige movies have an even greater place now when it comes to selling streaming services.
Deadline is expecting $10m for DEH this weekend and $11m-$12m for Shang-Chi
Especially since last week when there has been a 1080p copy around for those who only wanted to watch ironically. Lot of clips shared on Twitter :pPeople are better off seeing Shang-Chi again than Evan Hansen haha

Yeah it would need really good legs over the next few days
Y'all. Sony is using fan tweets in promos (and used the same source twice). 17% RT. My Dune outgrossing this take doesn't seem that outlandish anymore...

September 30th for an October 1st release date...When do reviews come out? I guess they can't use review quotes if there are no reviews yet.
