Absolutely would love a Part III. Part II was so perfect, and I'd love to see a resolution to her story. The way TLOU2 ended, had me dying for more Ellie.

I hope ND does a new IP, then goes with Part III - a sequel, to round out the series.

A new story. Abby and lev are done. Ellie is the last of us. So she will definitely be involved.

If the fireflies still exist
I think it will be along the lines of Abby and Lev finding them and going after a scientist so that Ellie sacrifices herself to make a cure. It would be something different from both games and there could be some interesting conflicts.

I hope they make that new Sci-fi IP first though.

I know it's not really the way The Last of Us isn't really a happy story to begin with, but I want some real closure for our characters. If they were going to stop, I'd have preferred they stopped with one, now I need something more, especially for Ellie.

Yeah they'd be a third 100%, Druckmen seems interested but I expect at the end of ps5. I also love how everybody is saying no, just like when last of us ended but here we are with a part 2

I sincerely hope Part III isn't released at the end of the PS5 life cycle. I mean the original and Part II were both swan songs and technical marvels, but I feel like they should just make it using a more updated engine. It looks amazing regardless.

If they are gonna graphically blow the PS5 out of the water, I'd like to see a different IP.

As much as I love the characters of the first 2 games, I can't see any start off point to a new compelling story. It feels pretty complete. So if they did another I'd want it to be same world but completely different characters and part of that world.

A third game would be 'continuing without any stop'? Huh?

You did say that the 2nd game being divisive means the entire idea never should happen which is just absurd and then leaped from that to say the reception of the second game (critical darling, good sales, outspoken detractors and supporters of it) is a sign it shouldn't continue.

If you don't want a third game continuing this story, then don't buy it if it ends up happening.

Given that a number of posts above ours have agreed that a new story and series would be better creatively for Naughty Dog, I am rather confused at your logic and defensiveness regarding my comment. A third game in the current series with Ellie would have little to work with since her story was largely complete at the ending of Part II. You could potentially do something different with Abby and Lev, but I'd rather have a new story for the next generation. If Uncharted could conclude rather well, what is so special about concluding TLOU2? I thought Part II could be a sufficient ending for that series.

And regarding the statement on the divisive nature of the second game, I am merely stating that having separate stories from the start would have saved them the headache of pissing off large segments of the fan base with whatever they went with. I also think having a post-apocalyptic setting with different characters in different locations would have been more compelling than continuing with Joel and Ellie, but that's a different sentiment. It seems like you're trying to squeeze an agenda that I hated the game and don't want that story to continue on that basis, and you're gonna fall flat on that front. I personally didn't mind the game. It made narrative choices I didn't agree with it, but it was an overall above average game. The combat was fantastic, and am hopeful for their multiplayer iteration. Have no idea why you feel the need to do PR for Naughty Dog like I hate the game, and yikes on that end. The game was fine for what it did, and its terrible that the negative criticism became so toxic and transphobic.

If you don't like my opinion (and I assume others) on Naughty Dog concluding the series with the second game, then simply move on from my comment.

It'll be a rhythm game. Ellie sets out to find the fireflies, does so in the first act, and then forms a band. They travel around around America, inspiring people with their music.

I want a cool story where like China or something found a cure for the virus, by utilizing someone like Ellie. Then this new game is about trying to bring society back together and the difficulties of doing that, despite a cure. That as a backdrop, and the story is about ellie coming to terms with the realization she could have given humanity a cure years ago, and ended all the suffering. Ultimately it's her finding purpose and accepting her past.

Some great lore possibilities here, and would tie up ellie's story. Would have more meaningful themes than the second and a more meaningful tone. The backdrop is rather different and would be super interesting to see as well.

People didn't want a sequel because they liked the ambiguity of the ending and the moral question of Joel's final actions. TLOU2 kinda stomped all over that, so as long as they're trampling nuance we might as well get a third game.

I would love to continue with Abby and Lev. Let Ellie rest and soft reboot it with Abby, Lev and new characters. I know its not a popular opinion but playing as Abby was so much more enjoyable for me.

I get that, but a sequel did happen and for many it surpasses the first. So I think if they have a good enough idea they'd do it.

The absolute dumbest, most contrived thing they could do would have JJ be grown up and for some convoluted reason embark on some stupid revenge/murder mission.

It has to be the third act. They can cover prequel material with flashbacks, which they kinda already did in TLOU2. I hope they tone back the violence (doubtful), and have the gameplay serve the narrative better (possible). It'd be neat, as some have said, for Ellie to take on a Joel-like role, perhaps taking on a more grown-up JJ after something happens to Dina. Gotta be careful to not retread the Joel/Ellie and Abby/Lev thing though. And I think it would be powerful for Ellie to come full circle and ultimately give herself to science to at last develop a cure. It'd be depressing for the world to be left as it is with no larger hope than in the smaller pockets of humanity, since it feels like that right now being in this state of permanence with COVID. We won't know until the end of the PS5 generation, but I'm happy to wait.

Which is fair, but I can't imagine what material they could have left on Ellie that would feel natural and substantial for a story. Having the continuation of Abby and Lev would make more sense, especially when Lev gets older.

Zero desire to see a part three if it includes Ellie as a main character.

I legit hate to say this as lesbian woman, but damn I couldn't stand the majority of my time playing as Ellie and will never understand how anyone can.

Now if it's Abby and Lev, I'm all in.

A third game in the current series with Ellie would have little to work with since her story was largely complete at the ending of Part II.
Feels very similar to posts I read in 2013. No one would have accurately predicted the sequel in any meaningful way and doing so now seems like it'd be similarly futile.
If Uncharted could conclude rather well, what is so special about concluding TLOU2? I thought Part II could be a sufficient ending for that series.
Part 2 is extremely open ended but having that be a conclusion could still work. You're obviously completely correct if you personally were satisfied by the ending or that the series should end.
And regarding the statement on the divisive nature of the second game, I am merely stating that having separate stories from the start would have saved them the headache of pissing off large segments of the fan base with whatever they went with.
Which I disagree with strongly. Not taking risks narratively or mechanically stifles creative people and is just about the worst reason to not make a sequel.
It seems like you're trying to squeeze an agenda that I hated the game and don't want that story to continue on that basis, and you're gonna fall flat on that front.
Do you think your subjective opinion is so infallible that for someone to disagree they have to have an agenda? Bizarre.
Have no idea why you feel the need to do PR for Naughty Dog like I hate the game, and yikes on that end.
Don't know where you're getting that from, my sentiment is studio/franchise agnostic. I don't care about your personal feelings on the game for this discussion, I care about the points you made for why a 3rd game shouldn't happen. My opinion on that can be universally applied to any franchise or studio now or in the future. Chase creative inspiration, don't stay away because you might step on some toes.
If you don't like my opinion (and I assume others) on Naughty Dog concluding the series with the second game, then simply move on from my comment.
Conversely, if you don't want your comment replied to...don't make it? The only one being defensive here is you. One of the points of this forum is to discuss and exchange opinions. Your comment would make more sense if I attacked you instead of your post which is something I don't do.

You'll notice that I have not and would not argue with someone that thinks they shouldn't do a sequel because that's subjective and valid. I will disagree on the logic they use to get to that conclusion, which is what I did with you.

except no one alive can do anything with ellie anymore anyways, Joel killed the only person who could.

That is a weird plot point to me. Only ONE person can do the necessary surgery? No one else is qualified? We don't know everyone who lives in (or attempts to) other parts of the US or other countries lol.

I think I want a part 3, but I'm not sure what I want out of it. Ellie would have to be involved somehow, I think that's unavoidable at this point. I'm open to whatever they do if and when it happens though. They have yet to let me down.

He could definitely play a role in it since Abby and Ellie would likely work together at one point. It would be interesting to see how he and Dina react to that. But I don't think they would make a complete rehash of the second (nor the first) game.

I hope it is nothing because the ending of TLOU2 was perfect.

If it continues I hope Ellie is in a secondary role
and it is equally as interesting and nuanced as 2 was with its approach to character and narrative. I would not want it to be as simply defined as a redemption arc.
Why you gotta hurt me like this.

Because she is an extremely deep character, maybe the most fully realized ever in a game.

well its 30 years after the outbreak, and most people who would have the knowledge before hand would likely have been older in their 40s and 50s by the time it started, but even at 30 they would be 60 now at the youngest, and with no means to really teach anyone such complicated stuff its really not hard to believe. they would have to survive the new outbreak and 30 years in this shit world and avoid major health conplications.

If they continue the series, maybe instead of an Ellie Redemption Arc, we get ND to actually give a damn about the BIPOC characters they create.
That's legit my only want. Yeah it would be cool to see Ellie cope years later in her 20s, but let's get some fresh content story wise.

Ellie redemption arc and Abby and Lev hijinks.

This third game is gonna really wrap up this side of the story. Sure, we'll have more in this universe but this next game is gonna put a bow on this part. After all of the pain this last game had they GOTTA completely lighten things up for the characters this time around. Like, they don't have a choice tbh lol.

I don't really think a redemption story is necessary for Ellie. It's more than a little implied that by the end of The Last of Us Part 2, she has finally come to terms with quite a bit of what she had been carrying with her throughout both games: Her burden of being immune to the virus and feeling like it's the only thing that makes her life worth anything. Her estranged relationship with Joel being one of the many motivators behind her vehemently pursuing revenge despite all reason telling her to drop it. Even her thirst for revenge against Abby herself. By the end of the game, I feel like she went through her 5 stages of grief, and settled on acceptance. That her actions had consequence, and almost cost her everything.

I also have no interest in a Joel prequel story. I don't feel like there's anything in that story that absolutely needs to be told. A prequel is generally something that builds upon the previous stories, re-contextualizing events from the "sequel" story. To be honest, TLOU2 did just that. It re-contextualized TLOU1. I don't need to play as Joel during the 20 year time period before TLOU1 starts. We already know Joel and Tommy did some fucked up shit that caused their split. They sold that well enough when they met again in TLOU1. Joel's actions throughout that first game weren't entirely heroic, it was just directed at a cause we could get behind (escorting Ellie to the Fireflies to save humanity), as opposed to a more general and generic cause of "It's the apocalypse, and we do horrible things to survive." He brutalized and murdered plenty of people during TLOU1. I don't really need an even less relatable story of him killing innocent people because he and Tommy were raiders/bandits. No thanks.

I'm in the camp of seeing the ending of The Last of Us Part 2 as much more hopeful and optimistic of an ending compared to the ending of the first game, which was a gut punch. I think Ellie is on a path to further recovery, now that she's put all that anger, guilt, and distrust of Joel behind her.

I'd rather have Naughty Dog work on something new for their next game. Then, if they have another story in the TLOU world that they feel is worth exploring, have at it, but I was incredibly satisfied with Part 2. As massive of a game as it is, it honestly felt like two games already. Naughty Dog is an immensely talented studio, so the idea of them tackling a new concept/genre/whatever, is more exciting to me than another Uncharted or The Last of Us (don't get me wrong, I adore both series, but man, I can't wait to see what they do next).

The themes I think it will hit could be about the end of humanity - after love (pt. 1) and hate (pt. 2), no matter how fucked up the world gets, we will still find our humanity even if it's down to just the last three of us. And find peace that the planet will go on without us.

Basically everyone will die.

It's a very frustrating thing about the Last of Us and how small they make the world for the conveniences for the plot. I'm sure there are other doctors out there. Hell we're forgetting there are still cities in the East Coast.

It doesn't need to exist. The story is done. It's like people just missed what the game's about, which they apparently also did with Joel in the first game so I'm not surprised.
