Previous gen was so long it had two separate Tomb Raider reboots as new releases.

Best games last gen all had 2 in the title... Uncharted 2, Mass Effect 2, Dead Space 2, Assassin's Creed 2.

This gen was mostly continuation of series that started last gen.

Life is Strange, LiS Before the Storm, Life is Strange 2... Does that count?

Tangentially Driveclub, Driveclub Bikes, Driveclub VR.

Until Dawn had two great games, even if one was a spin-off, but The Inpatient was frankly not very good. More on the level of cult classics than being a "signature trilogy" of the gen too tbh.

I hate how video games gets so expensive nowadays.
Sure it's nice to have graphics and presentation like God of War, but I would be just fine with all games looking like Dead Space 2. If that means faster development cycle and less risk.

Everytime someone mocks a game for "looking like a PS3 game" I get a little sad inside, cause people don't understand the cost of looking like a PS4 game, it takes so much money, so many people and so many time just to "keep up".

Playing Dead Space 2 on PC now makes me wonder, how amazing this gen would've been if video game graphic and production value stops here? Instead of new engines we just run the old ones in 1080p 60fps instead.

We are making it harder & longer for creators to execute their creativity, we are also making it riskier. Games like ICO and SOTC are no longer "worth it" anymore.

Man remember back in the PS2 days where you got 3 GTA's, Manhunt, Bully, Midnight Club, Warriors from Rockstar.. in the one generation.. the pursuit of power was a mistake...

Since when is Splatoon 1 current gen? Do you count the Wii U and the Switch as the same generation? They are not.

Plus, there is no 3.

then how are there games listed in this thread that released before Splatoon 1?

Wii U and Switch are in the same "generation" only because the Wii U failed and Nintendo had to make a replacement real fast. the Wii U started this gen.

dev cycles are becoming longer, meaning single player games are getting more expensive to make. a lot of devs move to short to develop MP titles where you can tie games as a service stuff to. even with tools becoming smarter and more efficient, the workload is still getting longer and becoming more complex.
In the time you make a Last of us 2, you can develop 2 MP titles with GaaS model and earn way more money

There is none. And that should worry us.

One of the worst parts of the long Dev cycles is the death of the sequel. Long cycles mean more money spent, more money spent means more risk, more risk means wanting to differentiate by innovating, and for that reason a sequel must be super innovative and such barely feeling like a sequel. And still take a long time which means low chances of having three connected, yet innovative games in a 7 years long generation

Ubisoft however is a very special case. Ubisoft HAS the resources to make actual quick sequels but then treats every game as standalone and that's frustrating too. Imagine if the 4 ACs of this gen would have had a planned story arch, they would had been the actual /only/ long arching narrative of the gen.

It's as if the industry collectively decided that if the game is not standalone then don't bother with creating a with a long term development.
They did it with assassins 2 with Ezio, 2 was good but the other two games were boring.

SONY has MASSIVE IP's this gen that will no doubt get sequels next gen just looks like they'll be trilogies everywhere at the expense of this generation.

Last gen lasted 8 years tbh

We are barely 6 years into this generation. Lots of good 3rd entries came late last gen

Its almost like the whole reason I brought up Youngblood was because I was counting Death of the Outsider as a technical third entry dude. Try reading the posts you respond to its not that difficult.

But the first game was last gen, so you only got two games this gen. Unless you simply mean trilogies which had an entry this generation, which seems like you could just say "The Witcher" and be done with it.

Watchdogs, Destiny, Titanfall and Splatoon seem to be the defining ones.

a few different decisions and maybe we get a TLoU Trillogy (and no Uncharted 4)
