As of November 2020, over 10% of all Steam users are running a GTX 1060 in their system. That's kind of insane. I remember thinking the GTX 970 was crazy popular when it was in 5% of PCs with Steam.

What do you think has made the 1060 so popular, and what GPU do you think will dethrone it in the future?

3050 Ti/3060 6GB probably

1060 6GB (important distiction) ran everything and was inexpensive, probably as simple as that

Is the 1060 more popular than the 970 at its peak? I am still using my 970, can even play Cyberpunk! (on lowest settings)

I think so. I tried using WayBack Machine to look at the Steam hardware survey data from a few years ago and that's the impression I got.

Performance / price.
Additionally, everything from 1060 to 1080Ti was being instantly sniped when they were made available due to the crypto mining wars. The 1060 was the most likely GPU to be available on a given day.

Source: Me. Looking for a GPU during those days by refreshing the buildapcsales subreddit every 15 minutes trying to obtain ANY retail price GPU in that performance range.

Hard to say when every new GPU that has hit the market recently are impossible to get a hold of.

Yes, it will likely happen again with a different card that hits the right price / performance.

I remember 10-ish years ago how the 8800GT was adopted in a similar way and had pretty huge market share.

😂 Its a staple for sure. My 1070 is currently pushing 2K on High with a stable 30 in Cyberpunk, so I have to say, it's lasted me more years than many other cards and I absolutely love it. A monster of a 1080p machine, and goddamn utilitarian about 1440p.

couldn't be happier!

Yes definitely. The 970 was and before that the 770 was the go-to. The 2000 series was just a uniquely poor value and the 3000 series is unobtainable now for most.

1060 6gb was a fantastic card at a great price. Ran pretty much everything to a decent degree for me until this year where it started slowing down a bit. If the 3060 is as versatile, I think it could be similar.

1060 was enough for 1080 60fps on almost all games for the majority of last gen. And it was pretty cheap.

The 3060 (ti) seems like it could fill a similar slot in terms of price to performance (provided availability issues are solved). No idea the 1060 was quite that popular though.

Supply will catch up to demand eventually. None of the new GPUs released so far have any chance at taking the crown anyway. If the 970 and 1060 are anything to go by, $250-350 is what most PC gamers are willing to spend on a new graphics card, and all of the new cards from AMD and Nvidia cost more than that.

Yes. The 3050 cards are gonna be popular as hell since they will be likely on par with 2070 or 2070 super.

I don't think Nvidia will be that generous. I'm expecting the 3060 to be about as fast as a 2070 Super and the 3050 to be between 2060 and 2060 Super.

Usually the people who spend big at the start of a console generation get destroyed in some way (7800GTX with its lack of unified shaders, GTX680 with its lack of VRAM). The cards that come out 2-3 years into the console cycle for low prices end up being the people's champions.

My bet is that the $250 card that comes out in 2022 will be the new GTX1060.

it looks like there will be two variants of the 3060, one stronger than the other. also, a 2070 Super equivalent will be too close to the 3060 Ti, especially when it'll have 12GB of vram

The 3060 Ti is like a 2080 Super. It would make sense for the 3060 to be one class down from that. Let's not forget Nvidia saw fit to release both a 1660 Super and a 1660 Ti with the performance difference between the two often lying firmly in "margin of error" territory.

It's important to remember how many people in the PC gaming space buy prebuilt PCs. Cards that are easily available and affordable enough to be included in those midrange bundles will always grab a big market share. And they stick around a while, too, especially if the launch a couple years after the start of a new console gen when prices have really come down vs performance.

It's a cheap card for 1080p 60fps.

There's no reason to replace mine right now other than wanting to play the new games at 144fps

those had the same amounts of ram however. here, there's a difference of 4GB.

If there was availability, the 3060Ti (probably the 3060 too) could take the spot. It costs more, sure, but it repeats what the 1060 was able to do: giving x80 level of performance at the next immediate gen

My Gigabyte 1060 6GB still serves well for 1080p. Combined with Ryzen 3600 I get 30fps on Cyberpunk mixed High/Ultra, 60 fps Kingdom Come Deliverance (which is insanely beautiful), a million fps on Doom Eternal, 30-60fps Metro Exodus, but it struggles a bit in Control.

1060 6GB represent.

It's the little workhorse that could. Used it for Red Dead Redemption 2, Ac: Odissey and other heavy games. It can still do pretty good IQ at 1080p30fps.

...I'll be happy when I can get a 3060 next year. Maybe it will last me as long as this one.

It's just crazy how GPU price inflation has affected the 3xxx series. If not for the Bitcoin goldrush, the 1070 (with a launch price of $379) might've been the most popular GPU over the 1060. But this generation's xx60 card is $399. i feel like we're missing an accessible tier, but maybe people are just buying prior-gen cards.

I had a 1060 6GB. It was cheap and offered great performance. I was able to play all my games at 1080p 60fps. It ran Overwatch at 144fps.

I sold it to my friend and he's using it in his PC.

Hard to say what will dethrone it in the future. For anyone that just wants 1080p 60fps, there's so many cards now that will get that for an affordable price. Its partly why I don't think there will be another as popular.

I love mine, bought at very fair price and it has stood strong throughout the generation.

My question is, which card is going to be the 1060 of this gen, the 3060 maybe?

It was an absurdly good value proposition at launch. I feel like I could probably get ~2 more years out of mine before it really fails to run the newest games.

1060 had quite a few variants from what I remember, all the way down to the 3GB which wasn't exactly far in price from the 1050.

I would in fact bet a ton of those are the 1060 3GB which launched at around 200 USD versus the 140 of the 1050 Ti.

I think a few years down the line the 3060 could take that spot. Price/value is there if the availability stops being an issue.

It is crazy that the performance target stayed around the same levels (970 to 1060).

The 1060 was a great card but I think the 970 was definitely more popular. I remember nearly everyone had one (including me) as the price/performance simply could not be beat and is easily one of the best cards Nvidia has ever made.

AMD's RX480 could've been that card.

8800GT was killing shit the ENTIRE PS3/360 gen into PS4/XB1. I feel like the 750Ti was a people's champ GPU also...
