...So this is NOT a parody?
Really?
😐
It's purposely being over-the-top and silly. It also makes sense when you realize half of the plot revolves around humans re-learning about sex and reproduction.
Also in Darling in the Franxx, all of humanity is immortal but at the cost of sexual desire. That is unfortunate timing because they humanity is attacked by a race of aliens and the only way to win against them is pilot mechs that are powered by sexual desire and human emotion. So the greatest minds in the world come to together to bread children in tubes so they can grow up to fight the aliens by essentially having sex inside of the mechs.
That's...not quite right. Nobody bangs anybody in a robot. Humanity is immortal because they inject MAGIC GOO into their veins. The reason why sex and emotion aren't a thing anymore is because people basically got bored of it after living so long. The magic goo they use to stay immortal/power all of their technology attracts monsters, who they battle by using robots.
Humanity's robots are piloted by male/female pairs, but there is no emotion between them.
The main characters are a control group of like 8 kids who the mad scientist char puts in a control group. Unlike the other children who are emotionally regulated, these kids are allowed to experience puberty and figure it out on their own.
It's pretty much a show about kids figuring out what love is in a lord of the flies-like environment. But also with robots and monsters. Yes, a girl figures out how babies are made and tries to create one -- but then she's separated from her partner by the government and her memories are wiped. It's the inciting incident that causes the main characters to rebel against their rulers.
The show is pretty crazy and the visuals are ridiculous but plot and theme-wise it's pretty serious. It's easy to pick out particular things and laugh at it but I think it does the show a disservice to be honest.
I think so. Evangelion has it's flaws but it is not that kind of show really. Even the sexual elements serve some sort of character, narrative, and theming purpose. Not like FRANXX which is just gratuitous sexual imagery to titilllate.
Despite its excesses there's more to it than just
hahaha anime. Don't be so reductionist! Everyone loves Eva but you're kidding yourself if you think titillation isn't what drives a good chunk of that show.
People put that show on a pedestal largely because it was one of the first 'good' shows they watched a million years ago. It's not that special.
