Isn't that kind of the truth? A lot of these games go for: "Sexy" and instead of just become... odd? Outfits that seem ridiculous and out of place in the setting. I am of the belief that you can actually have Sexy and Tastefulness. It's not a zero sum game. It's just a lot of these games veer waaaay off into the spectrum of weirdness.

Which then just makes you wonder who they were pandering to when they made those designs.

The only two characters I encountered who had reasonable designs are Aurora and Karen and even the latter still is big heavy on the top side and the game wants you to know that in the flashback cutscene with her.
I kid you not, i stared at Aurora because of how normal she looked. As for Karen, she's pretty comical to me. The human girl at the beginning looked fine tho.

Fallen Cecillia, alternate version of Cecilia who is queen/leader of the dragon people.

You can tell she's the 'big sister' cuz her tits are bigger.

Even after all these days, I'm still disturbed by the sheer dismissive their was to the concerns of gay and bi people there was to the Bury your Gays, seeing people straight up trying to declare that the trope is somehow good for gay people, talking down to gay and bi people, saying "No trope is bad" so you can't complain in the TLOU2 discussion (especially that TV Tropes thread... I wasn't so disturbed by the rhetoric I was seeing of Era since they blatant transphobia in the Cyberpunk discussions during E3.

It's really becoming apparent to me how defensive people get and how happy they are to throw anyone under the bus, whether it's POC, LGBTQ+ people, people with mental disabilities etc if its a work they like that's being criticised, even if they people doing so are also fans. I'm sure I've been guilty of being too defensive as well in the past as well but this year it feels like it's becoming way too common (or I'm just becoming way more aware of it).

You're becoming more aware of it, because people have always been like this - especially when it comes to niche/geek interests.

Basically, insecure people latch on to things to give them an identity, and so when you criticise the thing in question, you're "criticising" the person too.

Glad to know I'm openly being mocked in addition to no longer being a true fan. Lesson learned. Always be happy with sexualization. Never complain. I deserve all these harrasments and shit being slung my way because my life is forfeit because I dared think a design was shit.

I'm sorry this is happening. People are really shit. Especially in communities where anime and gaming intersect. It's always a ton of "Oh she's really cute and I love how cute she is" when the woman is designed to resemble a damn fertility sculpture with a pinched waste. And then that's downplayed as people talk around it - striking environments and gameplay depth.

Because fuck reflecting on humiliating designs amirite?

Also, sorry to quote you again but...

Regarding Aurora and Karen, they were totally a thing right? Might have been the English dub but they seemed to imply it heavily.

Is this happening on Reset? I haven't been keeping up with other threads lately.

The answer is actually a bit simpler than that; Sylvanas got a new model in Wrath of the Lich King based on her Warcraft 3 look. This was back when very few NPCs got unique models. Instead of making different models for all 3, Blizzard just recycled Sylvanas plate bikini for them. Ysera didn't even get a unique dragon model until late in the next expansion.

Unlike the other two, Sylvanas is still a major story player and her model got updated to make a little more sense for a former ranger general (her original model was a generic Night Elf):

8V2vmMdHsQH0akTZwJ-VI4KmWej1sEa9ri5rJoetLxo.png

Now, as to why they decided to not give Alexstraza Sylvanas' pants I don't know.

Just to build on this thread regarding Alextrasza and Blizzard's evolving take on female character design, this quote from Chris Metzen is from around the time of the Overwatch reveal

"We've heard our female employees," he said. "And my daughter tools me out about it. She saw a World of Warcraft cinematic of the Dragon Aspects, and my daughter was like, 'Why are they all in swimsuits?' And I was like, 'I don't know. I don't know anymore.'"

I guess when straight male devs are creating characters while in their 20's they'll have a different perspective than when they're in their 40's with kids of their own.

I'm sorry, what!?

Are those from ERA members or outside assholes that think ERA is a den of pedos? (Yes, that's a thing.)

The weirdest thing of all is the degree to which character designs with models whose chests are larger than their head have become so normalized that "well, what did you expect, it's Japanese!" is such a thing.

It's a self-fulling cycle. Games make characters with large chests, games sell well, developers continue to make chests larger, and so on. Regardless if these are multi-million sellers, they have specific fanbases who grew up on these games who then started to make their own games and then these games continued that trend.

Looking at that way, I guess it isn't entirely shocking that this is the path that things have gone down.

I've said it many times but with the price for entry being as high as it is in gaming compared to other media, companies will keep pandering to their base in fear of doing anything to alienate them. Then you start getting developers who grew up on these kind of games and enter the industry themselves.

Probably outside, all emails were burner accounts though

Damn, that's horrible! I'm so sorry :(
Fucking what? This is ridiculous. And people wonder why I really don't like nerd culture despite being a massive nerd myself.
What the hell? What drives people to do this?
How the hell did they get your e-mail? The fuck? That's awful.
There are also a lot of people agreeing that her design is awful. Don't fixate on the other stuff too much.
But holy hell, RIP your mail account. I'm sorry. It's sickening what some people think is "funny".

Thanks for the support.

This is the crux of the matter. Same with mobile gaming. What's the point in targeting demographics who don't have the disposable income, or would rather spend it elsewhere, when you can mine horny nerds?

Shit's fucked. All the more reason to tear it down.

It's not much comfort, I'm sure, but if you riled them up that much, you must be doing something right.

That character should die halfway through the game for this exact reason for biological accuracy.
Turn it into an art form story focused type of game about the experience of this type of injury.
Someone got a hold of my personal email somehow and told some friends because I'm getting spammed messages about how I need to die or be violated for daring to hurt their waifu
Wow, that sounds really disgusting and pathetic. Sorry to hear about what you are going through and I hope you overcome it.
Don't take these assholes seriously. Hopefully they get dealt with.

The thread you made is 100% justified and I agree with you on everything.

there's just something depressing about people seeing that atelier character's proportions and not thinking it looks absolutely absurd. Even if you're the sorta person who doesn't mind sexualization I have no idea how anyone can look at it and go "yes this is good character design." Are standards that low, or do lonely nerds think they're in the most important culture war of a generation that they're blinded to it?

Either way the fact there's harrassment is just gross, but thankfully those types of people tend to have short attention spans and will move on, until someone dares criticise whatever 1000 year old dragon girl shows up next.

People should not be surprised.

Nier Automata biggest selling point was 2B and Ryza doing better than ever is due to Ryza character design and her thighs.
Sex and ecchi stuff sells and Japanese developers will continue to make "horny" and "attractive" female leads in their games to drive sales.

There is nothing as beautiful as a full figured woman with a natural hour glass figure. But this is not natural, this is extreme to a hilarious degree, this is like a failed character creator attempt where someone slipped and maxed out on some sliders by mistake (not really), the extremely wide hips, way too small clothes with the cleavage gap and weird crotch ribbon, the gigantic breasts that stand straight out from her body and don't droop a millimeter. Why????
This actually makes Pyra's design look tame lol

It sells to anime fans because to have sexualized characters in their media, that doesn't mean "sex sells". From Software has been increasing in sales each game they release without resorting to "sex sells", for putting an example of a japanese dev. Or Capcom.

At the end, sex sells isn't a 100% true science and is more nuanced. Sex may sell to people that are used to consume media that has already a lot of sexualization, while doing the opposite for consumers that doesn't. And even still there's a lot of more other than sex sells with the first kind of ocnsumers, at the end Nier is still a good game and hat a lot of hype from the loud Nier 1 fans (me included) and Ryza seems to be the best Atelier in terms of mechanics (new engine, gameplay etc). Other games (even anime games) didn't get saved by "sex".

The character also gets less and less useful in body as the body starts to malfunction.
They also need to add a sub plot about how that lady with the huge assets is able to function in society without breaking her back.

Agreed.

Like I can't for the life of me understand the attraction to that. I would get it if it was natural but it just looks like someone who has issues with their body. You got that big assets lady that looks like if someone photoshopped a character design or the main character chick that looks like she will lose her legs any minute. I can't understand it.
