Speaking of anime/manga, it's time for one of my favorite Mangas to once again show how sexist attitudes in the manga can be. In the recent Oda Q&A that is featured in every volume, Oda was asked what Nami looks like when she is 40 and 60, this is the page:

jytmbm145ej21.jpg

The top is the "good timeline" while the bottom is the "bad timeline". Oda...Oda does realize that people do get old, right?

What's even creepier is that Nami (especially after the timeskip) is now based off his wife who beforehand was a cosplayer who cosplayed Nani.

I love (hate) how age 60 Nami is literally just the same Nami but with a different haircut.

Don't forget the entire Big Goal of the story is for the artist to make a manga so popular it leads to an anime so a girl can be the VA for the main female character. Which is a fine goal, but the two explicitly don't communicate that much so there's no actual relationship, just an idealization of one

when you try to create an 'unappealing' female character and fail by injecting more personality into her design than the appealing version lol

What's even sadder is that that's just a 1 to 1 copy of another One Piece character unironically proving how one-note his female characters are in design.

shakky_anime.png
Somewhat of a hot take: One piece character design is awful and seeing stuff like this doesn't change my mind.

Yeah 40 year old "bad" Nami is probably the most interesting character Oda has designed.

Yeah 40 year old "bad" Nami is probably the most interesting character Oda has designed.

It's even reflected off of the dialogue (Note: This is a fan translation so maybe the official translation is better...but I doubt it)

D: Odacchi, I have a request! Even if a reader requests "I wanna see what Nami and Robin will look like in the future" , please neeeeeveeeeeer accept and draw it. I beg you!!!!! Pen Name: 420 Land.

Oda: whaaa.... That's unexpected*.... Whaaa

The top is Nami in the normal timeline

Age 40: Come back again when you're an adult ♥ Age 60: fufufu. Me?... I'm already over age 40 you know...♥

The bottom is Nami if something happened/went wrong.

Age 40: I'm telling you to hand over the money!!!!! Age 60: Won't you buy...a magic vase?

O: Ooops, looks like I drew Nami! I'll draw Robin if I get a request for her later.

"Normal Nami": Sexual Innuendo

"Bad Nami": Actually playing up her greed which is one of her important traits.

So, it turns out I'm still salty over what happens with Kairi and Aqua in KHIII

We waste so much time showing Kairi being trained, and pumping her up to be a keyblade master...and she dies before the final boss because the villain wants to motivate Sora into fighting with all his strength...I'm sorry what!?! And the worst part is that this keeps happening to her character. In KHII, Kairi actually uses a keyblade and then...just does nothing. KH:DDD, Kairi just is in limbo until finally being agreed to be trained by Merlin. She just does nothing and always is in a state of "I'm preparing to do something" then Nomura decides NOPE! and fridges her.

And Aqua is even worse! Forced to be saved by Sora, losing her playable fight in a cutscene for no real reason other than for her to be saved by Ventus. Her again being put into a damsel in distress moment for Terra to save her (and Ventus) than doing fuck all until Kingdom Hearts needs to be closed. What is with Nomura and woman characters in this game?

Everyone is a jobber in Kingdom Hearts III. Even Sora apart from key cutscenes where something he does actually works for no other reason than the plot demanding so.

And Aqua doesn't really lose. She's beating Vanitas until he uses a dirty trick to use Ven's defenseless state against Aqua. Ventus also doesn't save Aqua. Vanitas decides to back off when the deck is stacked against him with three guardians of light against him. The whole thing was likely an intentional ploy to force a situation where Sora is under enough stress that he has to make Ventus wake up through desperation, so that the final confrontation can take place.

What happens to Kairi is inexcusable, though. But then, Axel is equally useless even though he had far more combat experience & is shown being a capable fighter beforehand AND the gets same training Kairi goes through.

Recently I was thinking about how with KH1 I can list multiple specific ways Sora saved the universe and his lost friends, but for Chain of Memories and KH2 I'm having a really hard time thinking about anything he actually accomplished himself. It's like did you guys forget that he's supposed to be the hero here?

i mean, yeah, but the problem is that this is our only fight with her and it just doesn't end satisfyingly for it. And it's exacerbated by the fact that it pumps up the moment like it's supposed to be her showing her true power then loses in a cutscene.

that was published in an actual science magazine
Was this released in any actual magazine? If so, which? Is it an ACTUAL science magazine or one of those shitty ones that publish just about anything and have zero merit as scientific publications. Maybe I'm just blind but I can't seem to notice anything indicating what magazine this is published in, and this isn't my first time reading science papers or having to look up relevant info for references. Seems like it's a paper made to look like a proper release in some magazine but I don't notice any names of any magazines? And googling doesn't return any quick results that would indicate anything otherwise. Again, maybe I'm just blind.

Here's the Reddit link of the original post from the author, seems to mostly be a high-quality meme.

It was never published in a science magazine. According to the original reddit post, the engineer was in his last year of undergrad research time for this "paper" as he had already submitted his actual senior project at that point and was basically looking for something to do.

The common excuse such writers trot out time after time is that they "didn't know what to do with her".

I'm still miffed after Kishimoto made Sakura a badass for all of five minutes (fighting alongside an equally badass older women at that!) and then proceeded to sideline her. And, again, he "didn't know what to do with her".

I sometimes wonder if that's code for "I don't want women making the boys look bad".

As someone who doesn't read Naruto I was confused by that sentence for a hot minute.

Also...how bad does it get?

"It's a boys' manga, so we just need to come up with a boy's idealization of a girl."

The best portrayal female characters from Naruto got was being playable in fighting games.

Battle shonens always get me depressed in that regard... Anyone here ever read Magi? It has quite a lot of fanservice but the female characters were just awesome, you had Morgiana who was the muscles of team, by far. Ren Hakuei, leader of an army, very strong general which got the respect of a whole horde of a wandering tribe, Ren Kougyoku, which despite the sheltered princess portrayal and behavior ended up becoming a respected and strong leader. Arba, which is one of the craziest meanest villains I've ever seen, and so on. Only to have half of the woman tossed aside in order for the boys to have their final fight between themselves

I love shinobu ohtaka but girl, you gotta learn how to fight your editors >_>

(I've only talked about half of the women in the series, btw x-x)

From what I've seen of the female Naruto fanbase, they weren't coming to the series for strong female representation

They were coming to Naruto because they wanted Naruto and Sasuke to fuck. Or any other 2 male characters.

Also it's weird how Dragon maid got so popular. Author really loves his shota x Huge Breasts Lady, in fact has a pretty much just porn manga just about that.

Ojojojo is his best work because it's really lacking in his usual weirdness.

I don't know, I remember people of both genders furious with some of the shipping marriage canons that happened because Naruto/Sakura was popular I think?

On the same topic of Jump editors affecting decisions involving female characters, the main overt thing I know editors will discuss with mangaka is the necessity of "Designated Girl Fights" because I guess the audience finds MvF fights less exciting for some reason? World Trigger's mangaka mentioned it in one of his volume extras and I always found that bizzare and enlightening.

The Light Fantastic Terry Pratchett said:
In fact, the hero even at this moment galloping towards the Vortex Plains didn't get involved in this kind of argument, because they didn't take it seriously, mainly because this particular hero was a heroine. A redheaded one.

Now, there is a tendency at a point like this to look over one's shoulder at the cover artist and start going on at length about leather, thighboots and naked blades.
Words like 'full', 'round' and even 'pert' creep into the narrative, until the writer has to go and have a cold hower and a lie down.

Which is all rather silly, because any woman setting out to make a living by the sword isn't about to go around looking like something off the cover of the more advanced kind of lingerie catalogue for the specialised buyer.
Oh well, all right. The point that must be made is that although Herrena the Henna-Haired Harridan would look quite stunning after a good bath, a heavy-duty manicure, and the pick of the leather racks in Woo Hun Ling's Oriental Exotica and Martial Aids on Heroes Street, she was currently quite sensibly dressed in light chain mail, soft boots, and a short sword.

All right, maybe the boots were leather. But not black.

This should be the intro quote to the thread, lol.

Because they were the most complex characters ever in that manga
And they had more screentime togheter than any heterosexual couple

Like they dedicate heavy emotional focus on 2 dudes and zero emotional focus on a dude and a girl and suddenly are surprised people think Cap should stay with Buck instead of the girl he has 3 scenes with

Not surprised. Women in many parts of the world are expected to "age gracefully" when they get older while men can get away with grey hair and wrinkles as long as they act like a badass. Hollywood is especially guilty of this.

It's in that weird spot where's a lot of groping shit(because haha the mc is a 10 year old kid he's just playing) and boobs but the female characters also had well written plots and personalities... at least Aladdin learned to keep his hands to himself as he grew up because the beginning is just a trainwreck with that :/

I can't recommend the series here because of that and the shoveling female characters thing, but I kinda commend the author because she came from a 100% ecchi manga and then wrote a battle shounen about deep political views that got ruined because they needed battles

Dad, The Beard Gorilla, And Me started getting translated again, so read that people.

It's about a 5 year old girl (6 as of the current chapter) and her widower father, trying to live their lives after the loss of the mom/wife. Dad's big bearded younger brother comes to live with them, hence the title. It's very cute and very pure, with a child character who actually just acts like a child.

It's becoming increasingly rare for manga to address any political issue with any sort of nuance. And if I had to guess I'd actually say that's because the internet has a really bad habit of dumbing things down, such that nuance no longer exists.

For example, while it's true that our current legal system is vastly over-complicated, it doesn't mean that there is NO room for discussion about legalities and constraining them to good / bad moralizing is a problem. Unfortunately popular media continually shaves away any form of nuance and that's continuing to get worse (i.e., hatred for lawyers is generalized, not specific to those who help large corporations and patent trolls).

What's it with clothing designers and their aversions to giving women pockets?

I really don't think so because for like 99% of the series it's hard to believe Naruto and Sasuke are even friends despite them saying it constantly.

The series squandered all of its characters, men and women.
There's a tendency in fandoms to ship characters on clearly toxic relationships, one example would be Jonathan and Dio still ranking high on the Jojo ship fandoms

I didn't read much naruto but I know they fought eachother till they were almost dead or something, that's healthy :p

This is just all overblown. It's a video game, it's pixels on a screen... I don't get offended at all when I see male characters in nothing but underwear for armor, it's just eye candy for those of us who want to make a female character and enjoy the gameplay by looking at things we want to see all game instead of just blandness.

It literally doesn't or shouldn't hurt you at all how someone else equips their character or how "sexualized" you think they look, sex isn't the point of these games and the main focus is often on the combat or what have you, focusing on tiny details that make a few people happier/buy into the game and trying to remove those is just silly.

That's because, unlike women, you barely see them. Your situation and the overall portrayal of men in gaming can't be compared to women.

Male characters are nowhere near as sexualized as female characters are, be it design wise and/or quantity wise. Media affects how people view others, be it print, TV, music, video games, etc.. Character design is not a tiny detail within video games.
