Still has issues of course, but she looks more like an android and no chest laser. (from what I remember)

Jesus. I've never played these games, and I think I'd feel super embarrassed playing them with stuff like that in there. It's all fine and good until they release their 'special attack'

I am playing through Tales of Vesperia and Judith randomly received the title of trophy wife. For those who don't know, you can earn and equip titles in the Tales games. In Vesperia, they either do nothing or equip an alternate costume. The trophy wife title does nothing and I have no clue why it was rewarded. I just got it after a story cutscene after the party arrived in a new town. And that cutscene had nothing to do with romance or anything of the like for any of the party members. It's very strange but considering that Judith is the sexy party member of the group that wears skimpy clothes, maybe that the title of trophy wife is how the developers see her. Here's party of the cutscene in question. Spoilers of course:
I wonder if it's a bad translation/localization. Maybe they're saying she'd make a good wife because she took care of all of their arrangements unprompted?
EDIT: Yeah, seems to be the case. In Japanese it's 気の利く女 . My Japanese sucks and is nearly non-existent, but 気の利くon jisho.org comes up as tactful, attentive, scrupulous, tasteful, or smart. 女 is woman.
I think some of those games definitely benefited from their sprites obscuring details. FF6 in particular it wasn't super obvious from the sprite that Celes was essentially wearing a cape and a leotard, especially because the Amano art was a totally different character design. This is more of a point of curiosity than anything else, but does anyone else here feel like a lot of series, particularly with regards to female character designs, are either going backwards or remaining stagnant? Like, I can't help but feel that Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy VI was some of the best work ever done by Squaresoft and it just doesn't seem like it's ever been as strong since then. Even the Dragon Quest series hasn't seemed as inspired since its SNES days. So many of these franchises seem like they're just spinning their wheels or actively regressing into lowest common denominator garbage.
If ff6 had more details Celes' outfit wouldn't have to be a dumb leotard though...I think some of those games definitely benefited from their sprites obscuring details. Yeah, there has defo been some regression. Not that their games (even FFVI) were completely unproblematic in the past, but especially with FFXIII & XV, there were some really low points for FF, especially when we take into account characterization as well. There have been some trashy designs before but ultimately they might've otherwise had at least some redeemable qualities. This is more of a point of curiosity than anything else, but does anyone else here feel like a lot of series, particularly with regards to female character designs, are either going backwards or remaining stagnant? Yeah, MK11 at least is really impressive, but it's by far an exception from the current norm. The MK11 designs deliver in spades. The salty meltdowns on Gamergate websites are too good.
I think what worries me more is stuff where there has been really extreme regression though, as in the case of games like Fire Emblem or Shining Force. Like that does not inspire confidence for a newer generation of artists in games.Yeah, there has defo been some regression. They aren't completely outside of redemption yet but I truly hope that the younger generations who are starting to make a large portion of SQEX aren't all no-life otakus whose examples of female characters are all from trashy anime & Senran Kagura or something.
I'd also like to comment on this. I think, by a similar measure, if they actually managed to recreate Amano's art, I sincerely doubt it would be anywhere near as bad as most current Final Fantasy character designs. And I'm actually talking about recreating it, not simply lazily interpolating it into 3D. Seriously, what defining characteristics are there to modern Final Fantasy characters? They could not be more generic if they were taken from an asset store. If ff6 had more details Celes' outfit wouldn't have to be a dumb leotard though...
Yeah, Fire Emblem is one that irks me the most. Nintendo altogether has had some worrying trends. Even if their handling of female characters has never been perfect (a whole lot of helpless princesses), the objectifying stuff has been relatively rare if not even (almost) non-existent. Buuut... Now Fire Emblem, Xenoblade, Metroid etc. all showcase annoying pandering.Yeah, MK11 at least is really impressive, but it's by far an exception from the current norm.

If anything, particularly with Shining Force, it shows that video games are being thought of much more like pornography or gambling in Japan, even if the game is from a "respectable" publisher.

One can only hope for a bit of a backlash against such blatant, constant fan service in everything, at some point (ASAP, preferably).
This is a bullshit rant if I've ever seen one. For starters middle eastern garb is fly as fuck, secondly this person seems like a racist since he's complaining about Skarlett seeming middle eastern as if that's a down grade. There's nothing wrong with her redesign at all since it's functional. I actually like Skarlett's move set and they did a lot to make her a cool looking character. Oh my fucking god why did I read the comments? Fuck these people. I'll sit right here and be a part of the small boobs are hot master race. The MK11 designs deliver in spades. Ed Boon mentioned that the new character Kronika is the first female boss in the series.
And that is something that is not very common even in current fighting games.

It's really gotten to the point that I'll wait until after release and seeing what is revealed here/elsewhere about this stuff before I even consider buying a new Fire Emblem game. Echoes was fine but it was also a remake of an old game, so who knows what will happen once they get their pervy little minds to creating something completely new again.Three Houses so far is fine but man has the last few games had some obvious "fanservice". Even Echoes has that one Matilda screen even if the rest of the game is mostly fine. Really hoping Three Houses doesn't decide that women must fight in their bedroom garments.
There are quite a few female boss in fighting games like, Mizuki Rashoujin from samurai shodown, Alpha 152 from DOA4, Karai from TNMT tournament fighters, Dural from Virtua fighter, I-no and Justice from Guilty Gear, Marie from Skull girls (just to name a few). However in current fighting games you're right, I can' t think of a single boss that's a woman or a girl. As someone who avidly plays fighting games I would love to see more female bosses in fighting games. (well aware that Tekken 7 has a female boss and is considered current)

Of course. Shining Force is the most obvious example, but also Fire Emblem, Phantasy Star, Ys, Kiseki, Final Fantasy, Xeno- (if you count that as a series, which I honestly don't -- Xenogears shouldn't be lumped in the dumpster fires that are Xenosaga and Xenoblade ^^), and many more have gotten, or are getting, worse and worse in terms of regressive pandering. This is more of a point of curiosity than anything else, but does anyone else here feel like a lot of series, particularly with regards to female character designs, are either going backwards or remaining stagnant?
Not sure what you mean by that one though. If you mean that Dark Souls had silliness like Gwynevere when Demon's Souls, then OK sure, but even those are mild, and the sequels (particularly DS3 and Bloodborne) had nothing "regressive" or "going backwards" about the female designs (and while it's not a Souls game, I doubt Sekiro will either). One of the rare exceptions in Japanese game designs, to be honest.
Oh yeah, the pre-7 characters in Dissidia are basically Nomura doing Amano's designs in his own style and they look great.I'd also like to comment on this. One thing Nintendo's in-house teams have going for them, at least, is that they prefer to employ people with hobbies and interests outside of video games. Fire Emblem, Xenoblade and the more recent Metroids are all from second party developers, however, which don't have those restrictions and are therefore, I wager, full of otaku...Yeah, Fire Emblem is one that irks me the most. Given the circumstances of the creation of this forum, it's pretty understandable. How did this forum get so many members that are quite sane with this subject matter? I feel like I in not in this world because I am used to hearing people that want female characters to be as sexualized as possible. I used to think that as a straight male, I must be in a tiny minority of people because everyone else just seems to have no problem with over sexualization in games, moves, music etc. Then I come here and it's all different. What is going on? Are good people silent in real life? Outside of this forum I have only heard objections from religious people, old people and some women. I have even seen women say that they cool with hyper sexualization, although I think they are kidding themselves. The research shows that women generally don't like sexualization: https://www.independent.co.uk/news/sexy-adverts-turn-women-off-research-shows-8985656.html
Maybe I shouldn't be asking why this forum is different, maybe I should be asking why the outside world is full of people that are so crass about this subject.
I am aware of that. But even the other place was better than what I am used to among gamers. Even casual gamers seem to be into all the crass stuff.

...you know...when Warhammer 40,000 is somehow better at giving women sensible armor than most video games, you question things...like how could have things gotten this bad?

This one is so bad it probably deserves its own thread I don't have time to write. Nintendo (of America, even) advertising it's "steamy" hot springs event, putting characters that are obviously minors front and center. I don't even know where to begin. Like seriously what the hell

They hate it when women exercise autonomy over their own bodies hence their disdain for dyed hair.lol according to that site, having short hair with red highlights is "SJW" hair
imagine hating women that much
It's more than just Gwynevere, but yes it's still rather subdued by comparison to anything "typical" of a jRPG today. Not sure what you mean by that one though. The hot spring event also introduces another Camilla with even worse anatomy than before. I can't believe she isn't even the worse thing to come out of the event.
There was also Dizzy in Guilty Gear X and Ramlethal in Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN-, Alpha 152 again for DoA5. Android 21 is the final boss at the end of all three story mode paths in DBFZ. In BBTAG, it's System No. XX (probably pushing it here, seeing as she's an A.I.).There are quite a few female boss in fighting games like, Mizuki Rashoujin from samurai shodown, Alpha 152 from DOA4, Karai from TNMT tournament fighters, Dural from Virtua fighter, I-no and Justice from Guilty Gear, Marie from Skull girls (just to name a few). One can only conclude such characters have some kind of advanced synthetic super-spine to both enable such poses and to carry the weight of their improbably vast bosoms.
