BUSTED? Why the numbers behind Mitch McConnell's re-election don't add up

On a Thursday in August in Louisville, months before the 2020 election, a parade of cars filled with Kentucky Teamster representatives and labor groups, showed their fury at Mitch McConnell's constant blocking of critical COVID aid. They drove by McConnell's office raucously honking and bearing signs saying "Mitch better have my money."

In 2017, a Public Policy Polling Survey asked Kentuckians, "Do you approve or disapprove of Senator Mitch McConnell's job performance?" Only 18% approved. He clawed his rating back up to 39% on the eve of the election.

McConnell, leader of Senate Republicans, rarely holds town hall meetings with Kentucky voters—not since a heated exchange with an angry constituent went viral.
Even as Republicans across the country still insist that the election was rife with fraudulent Democratic votes, no one's asking how McConnell managed one of the most lopsided landslides of the Nov. 3 election. They should. An investigation of Kentucky voting results by DCReport raises significant questions about the vote tallies in McConnell's state.

  • McConnell racked up huge vote leads in traditionally Democratic strongholds, including counties that he had never before carried.
  • There were wide, unexplained discrepancies between the vote counts for presidential candidates and down-ballot candidates.
  • Significant anomalies exist in the state's voter records. Forty percent of the state's counties carry more voters on their rolls than voting-age citizens.
  • Kentucky and many other states using vote tabulation machines made by Election Systems & Software all reported down-ballot race results at significant odds with pre-election polls.

This is a good read. I don't want to get all conspiracy theorist-but this article did find discrepancies and anomalies. Seems impossible though.

I agree. We also need to look at other Republicans like Lindsey Graham & Susan Collins, too. They want to talk about election/voter fraud? Let's look into theirs.

Wasn't there a story about some counties in TX and FL were Trump ended up with exactly double the votes he got in 2016? Maybe I dreamed that. Anyway, if I believed there was voter fraud I'm sure Republicans would widely commit it.

Is there anything can be done? Realistically? Is this one of those stories that never goes anywhere because of how corrupt the system is?

The only use this line of thought has is getting Republicans to back off the conspiracy bullshit and admit the election was fine.

Actually pushing this shit though... nah. It's just as nonsensical as when Republicans do it.

Is there some forensic science team that can investigate in the next administration? I keep seeing "everyone hates mitch" posts here for years now but Mitch is still King konging it.

I dislike McConnell as much as most rationale humans do, but this article is full of mostly fringe nonsense. For instance, the claims about Elliott County are woefully misrepresented. Donald Trump won it with 70% of the vote in 2016; it was 100% guaranteed to vote for McConnell with Trump on the ballot again. Same with Breathitt, which Trump won with 69% of the vote in 2016. Both Breathitt and Elliott are in the 5th congressional district, which has been extremely conservative for years. The attempt to paint them as liberal bastions falls flat if you know anything about ancestral Democrats in Kentucky, which this article conveniently tosses out the window.

On one hand I don't want to criticize Republicans for calling into question voting machines and broadly casting doubt on the legitimacy of the election; on the other hand Republicans are the kings of projection.

Um no. Once you start pushing voter/election fraud conspiracies you just legitimize what the republicans are saying.

Don't stoop to their level.
Trump & the Republicans are the ones who started it. Someone should retaliate against them for it.

Exactly.

You forget even though the people of Kentucky loathe the man and clearly disapprove of him, but they would rather see him at the seat than a damn democrat.

That's all it boils down too.

You don't need a conspiracy theory when just saying Mcgrath was terrible candidate who couldn't connect with people is a much easier answer and easier to prove.

Guys, I know plenty of Republicans around here (KY) that would criticize the Turtle in a heartbeat, and even claim that they don't approve of how he's doing with the job. However, they would vote for him in a heartbeat against the socialist boogeyman, which would be any possible opponent against Mr. Turtle. That's all it takes around here, just whisper the word "socialist" and the sheep will baaaahhh. Not that Amy McGrath would be capable of inspiring anything else. Mitch has had a cakewalk the last two campaigns of his since the Dems are repeatedly shitting the bed with KY.

If anybody wants to look into election fraud from the GOP then by all means (we know how they rig the playing board under legal circumstances with gerrymandering and opposing policy that would not give them votes), but if anybody wants to look into election fraud then they shouldn't waste their time with the bluegrass state. That shit is as obvious as a national Biden victory.

Cheating or not, his opponent in McGrath was an easy W for him to overcome. It was over for her as soon as she won the nomination to be his opponent.

Remember, Kentucky is one of the top three most conservative states in the country if we're looking at the general population. People like Mitch are genuinely safe there.

Definitely this. McGrath was beyond horrible.

Booker winning and getting similarly routed would have gotten nonstop blowback about how his progressive policies cost us a winnable seat, but her being the absolute worst Democratic candidate on the slate? Not a peep afterwards.

... and Susan Collins had an even worse approval rating than McConnell and lost to Gideon, who was totally viable as a candidate. Don't underestimate incumbency bias, especially for Senators who have decades of service.

That's the thing about Republicans. Their voters don't have to like them and they still get the votes because at the end of the day there's an R next to their name.

That's what we're up against.
