Because people like it, and pay for it, and in return publishers see that as people liking and paying for a thing. So they keep doing it. Simple.

Because it spreads server load, smoothing the launch.

Plus, it makes money.

Its a win win (for the publisher) for a game laser focused on online.

Because it was only really considered a "really bad move" on places like Resetera and places like Resetera don't matter.

You can't wait a week to play the game? Good lord, if people want to spend extra money to play it early why is it an issue?

Allowing hardcore fans to access the game a week early isn't really a big deal. In the case of multiplayer games, it's also allowing you to smooth out the day 1 rush a bit. Also gives you an extra week of public testing.

There's a whole thread this week lamenting higher priced games purely because of FOMO. A lot of people can't help but feel terrible about not playing a game as soon as it's available.

Also, I don't think EA ever stopped doing this.

Time is worth a lot to people. I've never paid to play a game early. But there are certain franchises I would totally do it for.

As someone who isn't playing Guilty Gear yet because I ordered the standard version, I can confirm it sucks. I also don't see this practice ever stopping.

Battlefield games are rough on launch and usually take a year before they play well anyway.
I'll wait that year before jumping in

Im surprised they haven't expanded on this trend, actually. Like, have an arbitrary release date, and different "early bird" versions. $129.99 gets you a 2 months in advance, $99.99 gets you in a month, $79.99 two weeks early, something like that. You can then say your game is only $60, but let FOMO trigger people to buy that way more, double the cost version.
They would if they could get away with it, but they can't. If the game is out in the wild for too long, people will no longer feel like it's "new" and won't feel compelled to pay full price. ("I might as well just wait for a price drop.")

The only good thing from this is, that less people will play on day one and the servers won't be as taxed and hopefully leads to less errors.

Source pls? I mean, I believe you, I just need some official source to get the angry members on another forum to calm down.

Jack says anything gameplay is included in the free tier of a season pass, and specialists are coming with seasons, so logically that means they're free, right?

Everything you need to know about 'Battlefield 2042' | Engadget
" Battlefield 2042 will include a Battle Pass system for seasonal content with free and premium tiers, though there won't be any maps or gameplay advantages locked behind the premium paywall, just cosmetic items. "

How about having early access for buying Deluxe/Ultimate versions, but only on 2 platforms and not the 3rd that the game is available on?

Like Guilty Gear Strive.

I think the only publisher that has stopped doing it is Ubisoft.

Special/gold/ultimate editions seem like such bad value you have to get at least... something. 1 week exclusivity is that something

Is it really any different for waiting for a discount to play a game after release?

It helps stagger the server load a little bit, rather than having every single player hitting the servers on day 1.

Of course they still won't work.

The Year 1 pass includes: 4 new specialists, 4 battle passes, 3 epic skin bundles.

The Year 1 pass is included with the Gold and Ultimate Editions, but not the Standard Edition.
They've also stated all gameplay related things will be free and that theres a free battle pass tier. Sounds like marketing to just make the special editions sound fancier.

What does that have to do with liking it? Publishers offer things because it garners more money, not because people like it.

Do people like paying more for the privilege of getting a game on its actual release date or do they begrudgingly do so?
Does anybody like paying more for anything?

I've paid more for games digitally to play them at midnight rather than wait for them to be delivered the next day (maybe). Do I enjoy paying more? No, who the fuck would what a question. Am I willing to pay more for 12 hours early access, garunteed delivery and convenience? On occasion.

Do people like convenience and not having to wait? I think plenty do.

That willingness to pay more for early access is what they are preying on by selling it to you as convenience and not having to wait. They know you have more time on the weekend so you're more susceptible to a day one price hike.

Wild idea here, what if the release of a game wasn't withheld for anybody?

It exists because there is clearly a ton of people who don't care. Doesn't surprise me there's a defense force for it on this forum.

Making a game available solely to one subset of customers willing to pay a markup for a period of time =/= being unable to afford a game.
This game and many others already withold content without paying a premium. It has a battlepass along with the most successful games on the market designed to lock content to people who are just willing to pay more. It would be nice if it didn't exist and if that content was just free but you can live without it however people are willing to pay a premium for that crap and that's just the world we live in.

Personally I don't think it's important enough to get worked up about having to wait a few days longer, just like battlepass cosmetics it's not the end of the world.

Yea I really dislike this practice, as it pretty much is pay to win. Eg if you pony up, you can learn the map and upgrade your ranks, weapon unlocks etc ahead of the masses, thus have an advantage when the game officially releases.

These types of bonuses should only be cosmetic imo, especially in a multiplayer focused game that is all about (fair) competition.

Title says it all. Why is early launch still a thing? When some publishers started doing this a few years ago, it was considered as a really bad move and the industry stopped doing it. Now, EA has done it again and provides access to BF2042 a full week early to the game. Gold edition is 90€ and Ultimate is 110€ compared to the standard price of 60€. I'm really disappointed behind this release strategy, they are horrible for players and fans of the series.

if all versions will be available early, it won't be anymore early access but normal access…
