Christmas time has been here for a bit but I'm finding an increase in really shitty memes from in laws about whether to say merry or happy Christmas and I just don't get it.

is this part of the whole mythical war on Christmas shit or am I reading too much into it lol?

depends, is the emphasis on whether or not it's okay to say christmas, or is it asking which to say between "merry christmas" and "happy christmas"?

I dunno, isn't the "christmas" bit itself the war on christmas? Don't see how it would matter what adjective you put in front of it.

I normally say merry because I'd generally go on to say "...and a happy new year"

If the name of the place you live has an "M" you say "Merry Christmas." If it doesn't have an M, you say "Happy Christmas."

America: Merry Christmas
England, Wales, Australia, Scotland, Ireland: Happy Christmas

I just made this stupid shit up now but share it with them in meme format and like 50% will probably think it's some real truism

Persecution complex.
My MiL told me after Trump got elected that she could say, "Merry Christmas" again. I asked who was stopping her before.

I thought the difference between Happy and Merry depended on where you were. Happy from the UK and Merry from the US.

The "war on Christmas" comes from whether or not you use the inclusive "holidays" or not.

Other than that, I have no idea.

Just conservatives with a victim complex, the "war on christmas" has never been real

The entire premise of Christianity is a persecution complex. Take that away and all you have left is their hatred of others and fights about tithing.
