Really boring at times, pacing is all over the place, and the story is nothing new for the series.

Gameplay was solid and tech was on point, but the game has too many walking/driving sections and bad climbig, and not enough combat scenarios (that are good compared to older Uncharted games) considering how long it is.

I feel like they tried to emulate what made TLOU so good, but as Uncharted is more like a Indina Jones wannabe than a survival experience, the pacing and slow moments work far worse.

Well they also were responding to issues people had with 3.

For me personally, it felt more like The Uncharted of Us rather than an actual Uncharted game. Specifically though, I didn't like the ridiculous amount of climbing, even compared to past games. Way too few bombastic set pieces. And the encounter design mostly sucked- It tried to accommodate both stealth and action, but ended up being bad at both, though I'll admit the grapple hook was fun. Sam was not a good character, and the story wasn't fun like the first 3 games. It just seemed like Strucklann were going through the motions, when they clearly would have rather been making TLOU2, but were kind of forced to try to save it cause Hennig and Richmond supposedly screwed it up. I loved The Lost Legacy though, and even Sam was likable in it.

This, except I still can't stand Sam, lol.

I liked it a lot, but I understand what people dislike about it. It's probably the same things that kept me from playing through the game more than once. The thought of playing the more badly paced segments again is not enticing. Anywho, there's a great many things to like about the game and overall I really enjoyed the spectacular ride.

There's always a pretty largely vocal backlash against big GOTY leaders like that. Think about MGS4.

That and it feels a bit emblematic of the gameplay vs cinematic argument of where gaming should be or where it should go. Personally I love the gameplay of Uncharted 4, so it kind of pains me to reduce it but I definitely think it's viewed that way. People who want emphasis on gameplay and systems get angrier that a game like Uncharted 4 gets praised because they're afraid it means more games like that and less like the ones they love.

I really liked it. Much preferred the more sandboxy enemy encounters and even the climbing stuff was more engaging than in past games.

And honestly the ps3 games are hard to go back to from a visual standpoint. Impressive technologically for their time, but the weird mix of realism and cartoonishness is hideous. U4 strikes a better balance and is beautiful.

Not my favourite Uncharted but I still liked it a lot. I remember that a lot of people were expecting a darker tone after watching the marketing material than what we got in the final product, this was one of the reasons of the criticism the game received

& done. after the successful trilogy, naughty dogs (on the heels of last of us) completely shifted gears, & opted to replace goofy pulp with gravitas. obvious from the opening, which ditched the traditional rousing theme song:

& replaced it with this:

I have to assume any negativity was coming form at most 20 posters on Era (and that's a generous estimate). You gotta have some perspective, the game has sold like 15 million copies or something lol.

It´s just because of the abuse of climbing sections, which I must admit there were too many.

Otherwise, Uncharted 4 is a 9.5/10 game.

It's a very vocal minority, as we often see with universally beloved and critically acclaimed games.

It's one of the best video games released this gen.

It gets quite bad near the end and loses alot of its appeal, felt as if they were recycling heavily at that point.

It was decent, nowhere near as good as 2. But better then the bungled 3rd entry.

The first 7 chapters are quite 'slow', but afterwards I think it becomes amazing.

actually liked it even more the second time I played the game, probably because I knew what go expect (a slow start, with not a lot of action).

My favourite entry. And the graphics have aged beautifully imo.

Perfect ending too.

Most people like or love the game.

Some people dislike it, some hate it. That is perfectly okay. I personally didn't enjoy it much at all.

Uncharted 4 and Lost Legacy are both great games. A lot of people on this forum enjoy trashing other people's opinions because it makes them feel better about themselves.

Someone who dislikes the game but is willing to listen to an opposing opinion, is worth having a conversation with. Someone who takes the time to explain why you're wrong for liking something, deserves to be ignored. People in the latter category can be surprisingly clever in how they manipulate a conversation to feed their schadenfreude, but once you've broken their spell, ignoring them becomes a kindness.

Well put. It's not a bad game by any means but I feel like it's missing a lot of what I loved about 2 and 3

The pacing also was a huge hit to me. The late-game flashback to them as kids (where I thought the game should be wrapping it up) was brutal.

It's era bro, only here was that narrative spread that it has terrible pacing, which is ironic considering a lot of games have bad pacing due to their open world design. My only gripe with the game was that it didn't have those epic set pieces the games were known for. Still it was a masterpiece imo and an appropriate conclusion to a great series.

It's a poorly paced "experience" with an uninteresting been there done that story/game design coupled with a couldn't be any duller side character (Sam).

It's not bad, it's not deserving of hate, but other than its production values it's just not great.

Which is not a good indicator IMO. I mean, player feedback is important and sometimes the best advice, but a project should have a clear vision and U4 is basically the pirate story from U1 again using the succesful TLOU template: emphasis on character interaction, lots of slower sections... It lacks what made U2 so good at launch, the game has barely good setpieces and the biggest one was spoiled during E3, the setting starts strong with some new locations but ends being another pirate island.

This is the main reason I only consider U2 a really good game, U1 now feels really bad and dated, U3 lacks charismatic characters and a good story, U4 has less identity and is boring, and The Lost Legacy felt to me like a "greatest hits" ot the series: the train from U2, the car from U4...

I think the formulae is just a bit played out. I did enjoy Uncharted 4, but it's amazing to me that they've managed to make so many games with such bad combat.

I started lost legacy. I got to some point at the beginning where they blow their way through some ancient relic to get where they're going, and I thought "I just don't want to do this" and turned it off.

I kinda really dislike the Uncharted series, but I liked this one best. The slower, more open ended segments were my favorite. I would take a Firewatch-like from ND where you just walk and drive around talking to someone.

It's...pretty universally praised lol.

As much as I enjoy the discussions on here, it's not really representative of the wider audience.

It was a combination of some legitimate complaints about the game and just some general hate for the UC series because it's at the top. It's also a fairly localized phenomenon to this community.

But it shouldn't insulate UC4 from legitimate criticisms. I love the game, but I would agree with the arguments that Sam is a weird retconned character if you've played the other games and that the game's pacing can be laboriously slow sometimes. Arguably ND even directly addressed these criticisms with Lost Legacy.

Because it's a good story and game trapped under sooooo much boring filler. If they had just trimmed the game, it would've easily been a 10/10.

I disagree, some of the best moments in the game we're exploring some of the most beautiful environments I've seen in gaming, also that moment where you're driving through libertalia with Elena and no ones speaking is very well done. I do agree with that they didn't quite deliver on what made the previous games so great which were those epic set pieces and non stop action. So maybe as a UC game it didn't live up to the hype, but as a game in general it's still one of the best this gen imo. I respect that some didn't like it tho, however I feel like particularly here on Era for some reason everyone tries to give the game a bad wrap.

The game has like 8 chapters with no combat and just walking and climbing. these go on for almost an hour. some are even back to back. it kills the pacing. there is zero tension in the platforming. its basically a walking simulator.

the last half of the game has zero puzzles for some reason. zero. i didnt even realize this at first but i recently played through it again, crazy considering puzzles are a big part of this game.

lack of setpieces. there is only one real setpiece in the game and that was spoiled at e3. the rest are basically your elaborate breaking bridges scenes. the final atc chase was good i guess, but again, a big downgrade from uncharted 3's almost half a dozen amazing setpieces.

Gun Combat. This is the one i cant forgive. the game has fantastic shooting mechanics. the gun fight arenas are expertly designed. you can go in and out of stealth. there is verticality. Drake feels more nimble than ever. And yet, because of one small thing, every fight felt like a chore. the enemies had laser aim. they never missed. your screen went black and white after just a couple of hits even on easy difficulty. its extremely frustrating to play a game that wants you to run and gun and move around, and yet penalizes you for doing so. some small tweaks here and there wouldve made the game a whole lot more fun.

Lastly, Lost Legacy does everything better. it makes good use of its open world level by adding optional puzzles and trials everywhere. it is much better paced with almost no levels without gunfights. you never climb for 45 minutes straight. the puzzles are also much better designed and dont require you to refer to your handbook every few seconds. the setpieces come at just the right time. they arent as elaborate as U3 but the final setpiece is the best setpiece in an uncharted game to date. chloe is also a much better protagonist. hell, they even redeemed Sam by making him far more likeable.

that said, U4 has flashes of brilliance tinkled through out. i only picked up on this on my second playthrough because i was so thoroughly bored during my first. the graphics still hold extremely well even after playing RDR2, GoW and Horizon. they blew me away all over again. there are a couple of scenes with Elena that are remarkable like the one where he finally apologizes at the pirate dinner table. the mystery of libertalia is extremely well told in game. every level tells a story as Drake and Sam then Drake and Elena piece together what happened. its realtime storytelling at its finest which is funny because ND is dismissed by its detractors for using cutscenes to tell a story. Everything from chapter 13 when they first find the Market sector to Avery's mansion is brilliant world building. that setpiece that they spoiled was also fucking amazing even though it was topped by Lost Legacy a year later.

those small moments almost tricked people into forgiving its numerous issues imo.

It was the best Uncharted of the bunch, but at some point when everything is Uncharted, it doesn't feel particularly special anymore. I'll expect a fair amount of ennui with TLoU2 as well.

I played it on day 1 and the graphics completely blew me away. I remember thinking to myself, wow so this is next gen. Story and level design were top notch for me. Didnt use the grappling hook much other than quick time events but it did elevate the levels and made it more open. The auction house level..mwha

I don't think UC4 (or the rest of the series) is a bad game at all, it's just everything I dislike about "cinematic" games, where there's no freedom and if you deviate from the devs' set path at all, you die and have to redo it until you get through the game the "right" way. It's archaic as hell to play through a visually incredible, technologically mind-blowing game where you're stymied by a 6-inch ledge that your character can't step on after they've just climbed a sheer cliff after falling out of a plane at 20,000+ feet. They're wonderful games for people who enjoy that style or genre, but not for me.

Ppl like to pretend as though era is exempt from having fanboys, I think some of it is legit criticism but much of it feels like fanboyism, especially when it's the same criticisms by the same ppl over and over in every thread.

I'm really curious to see what's the reaction when TLOU: Part II releases, because it's all but certain that it's going to be longer, slower and more contemplative than anything done by ND until now.

This debate itself is an old one, which won't change whatever it's said. My impression is that people expect different things from different licenses, and some couldn't adjust to what A Thief's End tried to be; meanwhile they have no problem doing that change when it's a new license, like The Last of Us.
People are going to expect that going into TLoU2 as that's what the 1st game was. Uncharted had three game prior to 4 and none of them had that vibe so that's why it had a backlash to it. Two different situations for me.

Weird pacing, the bizarre choice to do a full retread of the "relationship problems/let's look at Drake's childhood" stuff from 3, exploding instakill mummies, not enough bombastic setpieces for people's liking.

Definitely had much better encounter design than most of Uncharted 3, though. The added platforming mechanics and the improvements to stealth absolutely make it feel much more modern to play than the previous games.

The Lost Legacy is the *real* UC2 successor, though. Pitch-perfect pacing, pitch-perfect level and encounter design, and it absolutely oozes charm.

Graphics from the game are indeed good, but for me personally are not a substitute for what the game lacks, not even close. Maybe the scene you described would have impacted me a lot more if the game was not filled with scenes that are exactly the same: you walking from A to B while doing nothing interesting except watching the graphics. At the end, the climbing/platforming is also braindead, so you're really only engaged and taking decisions during combat, and a game that doesn't let me take relevant decisions during a good % of the experience is surely going to be boring.
