Flashy, simple, caters to hyperaggressive players who like to press buttons. They don't become less common in higher ranks, either.
I definitely don't think you see them anywhere near as often once you get into the super/ultra diamond and master territory, at least i don't. But yeah, Plat and below, they're still out there pressing a ton of fucking buttons, especially in the gold ranks.

This has most certainly got me back to playing some matches again. It is such a great game. Criminally underrated.

I obviously have a lot of respect for Ono and what he did with 4 and bringing the series back but man, it's insane how him leaving seemingly just made things so much better pretty much across the board. Remember the roadmap fiasco from Season 1? I sometimes wonder how we all put up with it for so long lol.
Yeah. I like Ono for what he did with 4, but if some rumors are to be believed, he was a bit difficult when it came to other Capcom fighters. Still, its thanks to him we got any Capcom fighters back after they just basically disappeared in the PS2 era (aside from a few Japan only published games, and... Capcom Fighting Jam...)
But even with everything going on in 2020/2021, Ono departing etc. the comms, roadmap and such were just that much better. It really feels like the people handling it now "get" it, and SFVI so far has me very hyped and reassured that things are in good hands.

I'm not particularly convinced that Akira not returning is in any way definitive. Other than the work that went into implementing the first character representing the official merging of the SF and Rival Schools universes through a mainline title (rather than the "maybe, maybe not" represented by Sakura's guest appearance in RS), as well as hint dropping done with Rose and Menat's win quotes in SFV, pretty sure it's not lost on Capcom that Akira is the third most selected female character in that game online after Juri and Chun in their character usage data.
god i hope, still not entirely convinced, but maybe it's another luke scenario where they kinda had to incorporate stuff originally intended for 6 to fill in the gap.

then again, she wasn't in the leaks so i doubt that. Fingers crossed anyways.

Ono deserves a statue for carving out a new space for fighting games at Capcom (and in the industry, tbh), even though he wasn't really the best person to guide the future of that space.

Yeah, it seems like he did the series a lot of good... then stayed on too long and did a lot of harm. It is too bad he didn't duck out sooner.

Bronze league is still full of Kens, I don't understand what draws so many people to him.
It's pretty easy to understand if you put any time in with him. He's the aggressive, over the top shoto. His combos are both intuitive and very easy with two very easy target combos and all-around absurd corner carry thanks to HK Tatsu. This means if he touches you, you're going either deep into the corner or you're like 3/4 of the way there. If you manage to get out of the corner, Ken's back-throw ALSO has equally absurd corner carry, so you're going right back in there from basically half-screen unless Ken just says "Fuck it" and drags you straight into the other corner because he can just do that.

Take that and add both a V-Skill command dash which is a thousand times more comfortable to execute in SF5 than your normal double-tap dash inputs (and can be canceled into a poke/throw or be held into a step kick that's safe if spaced correctly which low ranks WILL NOT punish consistently) and a V-Trigger that basically forces a player into the HK Tatsu casino where you either eat the hit as it comes out, or you block it and you're forced into a 50/50 Throw/DP mix-up from full screen. It's real easy to see why players gravitate to him early on.

It doesn't STAY that free. By Super Silver you need to start playing him a bit more honest and you may have to drop VT1 for VT2's super easy high damage AA juggles, but he still has a lot of legit tech, hype AF Crush Counter chases, strong movement and crazy moment-to-moment interactions that is all really fucking fun to engage with.

Bright side of all this; SF6's Drive Dash is basically Ken's V-Skill 1, so Ken's not going to get that shit for nearly as free as he does in 5, AND everyone else is going to be able to get in on some of that SFV Ken cheese with that stuff in the early going.

I thought about it but then I remembered launch and how much I felt let down by Capcom so I didn't.

The championship edition upgrade was half off on psn so I picked the game up again and there is a ton of content now. It's a shame that it's still stuck on a base ps4 version, though, the 1080p and long load times are a little hard to get used to again.

Well the Kens in bronze will utilise maybe one of these things and not very well. And it'll be something different for each one. Unfortunately I am also terrible and can't also figure out the correct answers in the middle of a match so the guy spamming full screen HK Tatsu's will take games.

Leaks so far only seem to have an idea of the base roster, if that helps. Akira is totally the kind of character you'd keep in your back pocket for DLC, especially if she's as popular as she was in SFV.

Yeah, it seems like he did the series a lot of good... then stayed on too long and did a lot of harm. It is too bad he didn't duck out sooner.

Probably the best way to put it. He was vital in Street Fighter shooting back into prominence but he had long overstayed his position in the over 10 years between SFIV and his ultimate departure, and one could argue his tenure was already starting to get long in the tooth by the time SFIV happened anyway.

Capcom's fighting division is the strongest it's been in a long fucking time, and Ono had to go to make that happen.

Still play every week. I got to super gold for the first time this summer and it felt good but I know I'm still pretty bad at matchup knowledge and the like. I play by feel too much and don't care wether I'm playing super solid sometimes. I'm hoping to change that in 6 and be better than ever.

Me. I kinda ducked out way before Arcade Edition happened not because I disliked it, but there were way too many games that took my attention away, not to mention the influx of fighting games alone.

Has online been dreadful for anyone else who got back into things though?

Literally playing on a wired connection with a friend on the other side of town and the lag was absolutely horrendous.

Most connections have been fine for me but then there's the occasional match where the connection is just awful. There was one match I played a little while where the game actually froze twice for a couple of seconds.

Can't say I ever really put it down. Been picking it up about once a week since I jumped in with AE. Hoping to see myself with 1 million FM someday but since the average is 250 a week I imagine the FM servers or w/e will be shutdown long before I reach it.

I plan to jump back in when I have the time. With the SF6 hype around, there will probably lots of people playing again.

Yup I bought vanilla and arcade edition on release, but never got around to putting time into it like I did SF4 series. SF6 has me scrambling to catch up.

Seems both simpler and more convoluted than what I expected. V triggers seem to make the game so conditional... there's a lack of freedom in some instances. The system feels like it's trying to wrangle decades of abilities and design, like an MMO on it's 8th expansion.

But then the matches play out so fast, it's as if it's all for nothing.

Idk, I'm sure these are stale 2016 impressions. I'm going to keep chipping away at it. Though it feels great to be playing street fighter again.

My brother started playing Ultra SFIV on the Xbox 360 again lmao, because it's all he has right now. Bless his heart.

The new-gen console struggle is real, but so is the Street Fighter 6 anticipation.

I picked up… Ultra Street Fighter 2 on Switch. There's still people online!

I might reinstall SFV though.

I'm not really into fighting games, I just don't have the patience to deal with how these games control (trying to do most of the moves with a normal controller is hell).
As such, I am solely interested in SF6 due to its "Modern" control scheme (the rest of the game also looks really good, so that helps). I wish I could try these noobie controls in the older games.

I tried to but I couldn't find my Xbox copy.

OH WAIT!

...
..
.

Jokes aside, I'd rather play Street Fighter 4 again. But I haven't touched it in quite a while, too. ANd I used to gobble up SF games like hot sauce. (Is that even a saying...?)

I think it's actually pretty great and wish I'd picked it up sooner.

Actually, yeah. lol. After haven't touching it in months.

Just to main Luke in the ranked matches--and in preparation for him being my main in SF6, because I think he's pretty cool.

I haven't played since Lucia I believe, but I picked it up on PC this morning. I have a hard time playing fighting games these days with my hands, but I'm hyped enough for 6 that I want to get back in.

Do you think SF6's Modern control type would help with your hands?
I hope so! My biggest issue is these days is motion inputs, my hands have pretty bad arthritis and they just lock up pretty severely when having to do those repeated motions. I know I'll be losing options using the modern control type but I do hope it's going to make it much more enjoyable for me.

I hope so too. My hand issues are one of the reasons why I switched from gamepad to arcade stick a while back. I found being able to spread my hand out over the buttons instead of curling it around a controller helped me.

Using a joystick might not be ideal if you have wrist problems, though. If I ever play SF6 on a gamepad I will be giving Modern type a run too.

Zeku is just a whole lot of fun and has kept me playing since I started about a year ago. It took me about 9500 matches and about 900 hours (split between Nash, Sagat and Poison before I settled on Zeku) before I made Platinum and feel like I belong there. got about a 50% win rate and hoping to make it diamond eventually, but I'll settle with super platinum if that's all I can achieve. or Platinum is fine too. So I guess my answer is no, I was playing SFV before any SF6 hype. It's probably my favorite Street Fighter next to any of the SFIII games. SFII is still a great game, but not my personal favorite, even with the nostalgia it brings. Never played much of 4.

This exact scenario will always be my enduring memory of SFV. The netcode just was not good. It's why I'm so hesitant to come back, even though I want to play again to prepare for VI.

I'd like to, but I've only got an Xbox.

However I did grab the Ultra SF4 update that was on sale last week cheap and have been playing some of that. Still haven't had the nerve to try the online, but I have been constantly browsing the available fight sticks on Amazon and may just pull the trigger here soon.

I played this game once in a restaurant that had a PS4 while hanging out with some friends, I played it just because we wanted to play a fighting game and MKX wasn't available, but I really didn't find anything attractive or unique about this game, I thought it was pretty raw, but maybe I haven't played enough.
