The smart move would be to wait till the lease expires and just not offer them a chance to renew.

The stupid move would be to make a scene on film, where a lawsuit is highly like plus terrible PR

I feel like there's going to be a fat payday for these business owners but this is the US so...

Gotta love how racists go out of their way to be pieces of shit in the middle of everything that is going on. These assholes will never change.

So many landlords are already scummy when doing evictions since they count on their tenants not having the legal knowledge to know if what the landlord is doing is legal or not. This adds explicit racism to that.

The landlord should be sued. I am sad they were evicted but also they should be happy they aren't giving their hard-earned money to a racist anymore.

Ridiculous, I wouldn't do something so if you do it, you are wrong. Hope the sue and win

Can this even legally be done?
Not sure why not. It's the same legal principle that allowed that marketplace to evict a business for one of its family owner/operators saying some racist shit (about George Floyd) on social media. The 1st Amendment only has to do with government infringement on speech, private businesses have no such restriction.

Sue his ass. Would be doubly satisfying if they publicly donated any lawsuit winnings beyond the money they lost for relocating to Black Lives Matter. Make it nice and clear that he's forced to give money to the Black community

Pretty sure this could go the opposite way. You're right there's no federal protection of real estate rights based on political opinion, BUT... especially based on that email from the landlord, if the resident sues there's a very good chance the court will side with them in a "letter of the law" argument due to the housing protections against discrimination based on race/skin color granted by the Civil Rights Act of 1866.

And I hope they rake the landlord over the coals if that is the case.

EDIT: Also, that landlord is probably gonna have to deal with quite a bit even outside the court room, as these past two weeks are proving to be a very bad time to show your ass in regards to racial issues.

Evictions are gonna be the next big battle for leftist organizations out there. Housing is a human right.
