How good is Dandara? It's on my radar. (I played and really liked Hollow Knight, now starting with Metroid Zero Mission).

I just want to preface that I haven't played Hollow Knight.

I found the art direction to be particularly intriguing if not beautiful. I also enjoyed the story, but I put my language settings on Portuguese, so hopefully the localization was good. It took me around 15 hours to complete, but that's only because there were a few sections of the game where I was consistently dying.

What makes it stand out as a Metroidvania is basically the movement. Rather than having a character that moves horizontally and has the ability to jump up and down ledges, Dandara is a game where the character is grounded on a surface and you, as the player, launch the character towards whatever surface you want her to land on that is safe for her to land on. This seems like it would limit mobility, but you can chain that catapulting movement as quickly as you want, which adds a fun dodging+shooting element to the game that is (considering the Metroidvanias I've played thus far) unique and really fun.

It's good, but it's movement is like no other game I've experienced. It's entirely you dashing in straight lines to walls/surfaces. I'd watch some gameplay if I were you beforehand, but I'm glad I played it despite how subversive it was in that regard.

Axiom Verge is more experimental, but Guacamelee is more polished. I preferred Guacamelee, but it depends on what you're looking for.

Guacamelee

...and I agree with everyone saying Steamworld Dig 2. I didn't care for the first all that much but absolutely loved 2. I just wish it had been an hour or two longer.

Hollow Knight of course, then Ori, then Guaca 1 (humor might be dated, so optional) and Guaca 2. Didn't like Axiom Verge personally.

DONT PLAY HOLLOW KNIGHT ITS VERY HARD ITS THE DARK SOULS OF METROIDVANIA THERE IS LOT OF BACKTRACKING ITS VERY HARD OVER 35 HOURS IN IT NOT FINISHED TOTALLY LOST ON WHERE I SHOULD GO AFTER NOT PLAYING FOR A FEW MONTHS TBH THERE IS NO GAME THAT COME CLOSE TO METROID EVEN ORI WHICH I FOUND VERY DEPRESSING BEST BET IS GUACAMELLE
lol this is obnoxious and allcaps yelling but do I ever feel seen. Hollow knight has the worst pacing of any of these games I've ever played, bar none. it's totally a kitchen sink approach. that 'bloat' and 'padding' everybody always complains about with long games? that's Hollow Knight to a tee

EDIT: oh I see the title was allcaps yelling as well haha

also i do own hollow knight ori monster boy dead cells
so why were they not included in this conversation. did you already play them?

complaints about bloat and length in HK are extremely valid but it's also just very good generally as well. i hope they experiment a little more in Silksong (looks like it), and manage to keep it a little more concise (remains to be seen). if so, they could have a truly incredible game on their hands

Out of those three I'd suggest playing Axiom Verge.

So, what's so good about Hollow Knight compared to any other Metroidvania out there? The art style has always put me off.
The intricacy of the map is godlike, there's an incredible variety in enemy types and build options for your notches, the plot is also pleasant and interesting while taking notes from some other important games. The difficulty is also pretty challenging. In general, it feels like a true world with true inhabitants that has distinctive locations and charming characters.

I don't think you can go wrong with either Guacemelee 1 or Axiom Verge. Both really fun games. If it helps steer your decision by buying Axiom Verge you're supporting the dev in helping his son that has a brain disease.

Guacamelee is a good starting point because it's short and fun.
Axiom Verge is longer, and a more hardcore game for people that likes games such as the original Metroid.

Steamworld Dig's artstyle has been a turn off whenever I see it. So I should...really...check it....out?
Steamworld Dig is a good game. Dig 2 is an excellent game.
You should check them out.

I'm so jealous of anyone who hasn't played HK, Ori or AV yet.

OP also check out Timespinner. Really nice shorter Metroidvania with a sublime soundtrack.

Axiom Verge is one of the best Metroidvanias. I genuinely think it's better than Super Metroid.

You should play it.

Hollow Knight would be my answer as well. Loved both Guacamelee games but I consider HK to be in a league of its own. Even better than Metroid imo.

P.s. Should I play Axiom Verge ? Something about it has always put me off. (graphical style maybe ??)

Guacamelee 2 is pretty decent. Axiom Verge is alright but generally disappointing past the novelty of the weapons.

AXIOM VERGE IS GOOD

GUACAMELEE IS FANTASTIC

(MAYBE I SHOULD REPLAY AXIOM VERGE NOW THAT I HAVE SOME METROID GAMES UNDER MY BELT)

Why is Guacamelee 2 an option? Why would you start with that as opposed to the first one?

Guacamelee is super accessible and charming so I recommend that. Never played the second one though.
Axiom Verge is also very good but I would play that later.
I'm not the biggest fan of Hollow Knight.

Oh wow. Guacamelee really good, Axiom Verge is bad and reminds me of Metroid 1 in all the wrong ways. We've moved on.

I thought Axiom Verge was mediocre. Guacamelee is a better game for sure, but it's really an action-platformer that happens to have an interconnected levels. Exploration and discovery are not the focus.

For the topic, yeah there is something wrong with Hollow Knight. It got everything to be love for, gameplay, atmosphere, but i feel with it is like too much is like too little with this game. People buying it shouls be aware its like a Souls game first than be compare to a metroidvania. I dont think they miss the boat with this game, a lot enjoyed it, but making it a longer game with too much back and forward kinda killed it for me. I wanted to continue it just yesterday, saw again my clock time at 36hours, look at the map and was totally lost on what i needed to do next, on where to go on that giant map. Suck but to get in it again, i think i would need to restart it a, and im positive i dont want to do that.

Axiom Verge then Guacamelle 1 + 2 Punch Collection, and if you still haven't had your metroidvania fill I'd recommend both the Oris and Dandara Trials of Fear Edition.
