Midgar, With Love
I've been playing Pokémon Platinum lately as sort of a "just before sleep and/or prior to my cat usurping my entire right arm as her pillow" gig and I've been steadily impressed with not just the diversity of the game's world but also the length of its campaign. It's by no means some Xenogears-sized epic in clock time, nor should it be, but Sinnoh has a lot going on and the story events occur with enough frequency to keep me from beelining straight to the Pokémon League in no time at all. Added together with the fact that the game isn't even a hyper-linear adventure a la Sun and Moon, and I'm thinking maybe Platinum is my favorite installment in this regard.

But I've also rather enjoyed a few other Pokémon campaigns. Hoenn's springs to mind, specifically Emerald's version. And while Alola is indeed an exercise in railroading, I still had a good time admiring the scenery and soaking in the storyline. (I haven't played USUM yet, for the record.) My last time with Johto was way back in Crystal, if memory serves, but the aesthetic has stuck with me well enough that I have a feeling I'll enjoy my traipse across HGSS rather nicely after I finish Platinum. That said, I do remember folks frequently stating that Johto itself is disappointingly short, and I'm pretty Kanto'd out again after LGPE, so we'll see how highly I wind up ranking all that jazz later.

I can't wrap up my own thoughts without tossing an honorable mention out toward the Unova games; I don't care for Unova itself quite as much as I do Hoenn and Sinnoh, but I think Gen V is the gold standard in storytelling. That alone warrants a high ranking in my campaign quality thoughts!

As for downright weaker campaigns, I reckon it's a matter of listing what's left. I grew up on Kanto first like many other thirty-somethings but I don't really hold it in super high regard. I don't dislike adventuring across the OG island, but I don't exactly crave RBY/FRLG/LGPE replays either. Sword and Shield's campaign was weak on several levels; the lively assortment of rival figures and growing array of locations courtesy of the expansion pass are helping me to reassess, but the story was so hands-off and the lack of dungeons and routes so linear they make Alola blush... doesn't add up to a big winner for me. Still, I dig both Kanto and Galar more than I do Kalos, not just in map design but in storyline as well. I know the XY hate is common around here, and I don't mean to belittle Gen VI fans (...I'm sure you exist somewhere?) but apart from Mega Evolutions I'm not into it much at all.

What about y'all? Favorite campaigns? Least favorites? What do you look for in them most of all — postgame depth? Overall difficulty? Length? Location diversity? I'd turn this into a poll but I don't want to simply list generations, since when we add in all the remakes and the friends we've made along the way, I'd actually be leaving several choices off the list.

The thing I look for first and foremost is new Pokemon that I actually want to catch.
I find X & Y to be extremely underrated in that regard. That gen has a ton of great new Pokemon. Easily better than the ones introduced in Sun & Moon and Sword & Shield in my opinion.

The entire DS era was the peak of the franchise in basically every way. Meaty worlds to explore, lots of content throughout as well as post game.

Platinum, HG/SS, BW, B2W2.
That was a damn good run.

I'm of the same assessment, with Black 2/White 2 being my favourite game of that era for the series.

I honestly haven't been happy with the following 3DS and Switch mainline instalments, to be perfectly frank.

This, hoping that Sw/Sh is just growing pains for GameFreak and they make Switch equivalent installments similar to DS counter parts in terms of world building and endgame.

I honestly had a lot of fun with Y's story, even if the plot was stupid and only served to bring us the "it's been 3,000 years" meme lol. I honestly don't care about story in Pokemon, which is why the games that tried to do it well (White and Moon) didn't really appeal to me, even if I did enjoy the game in White's case.
The biggest thing I look for are 'does it have good Pokemon' and 'are the locations you visit fun to explore', and with that criteria, I liked:
Both
  • Leaf Green
  • Pearl (Never played Platinum but I know it's a better version)
  • Heart Gold
  • Y
Good Pokemon
  • Shield
Fun Locations
  • White
And I didn't like Moon, didn't play the two sequel games, so White 2 and Ultra Moon, and only played an hour of Omega Ruby, but that seemed like Y but in Hoenn, which is cool by me. In terms of Gen 1 and 2, their remakes make them all but obsolete outside of nostalgia purposes, and hell Leaf Green feels super dated now due to preceding the physical/special split.

SoulSilver/HeartGold, B/W, Diamond/Pearl (I haven't played Plat) were the GOATs.

X/Y had a nice start but were clearly unfinished. Sun/Moon was....okay. I havent finished Sword/Shield, but I haven't been impressed.

Gens 1-3 all benefitted from being remade.

i look for new & exciting stuff from single player games

red/blue were cool

everything i played after (this isn't every game) felt like a rehash without any innovation

Gen 5 is the best.

Diamond/Pearl were the worst. Just incredibly slow games from start to finish. Gen 1 is also really boring and wonky in hindsight.

My preference:
HGSS>BW2>USUM>RBY/FRLG>Emerald>BW1>Platinum>>>>>>XY

I like to make dumb self-restricted challenges for myself with pokemon games so I tend to prefer the games that actually become difficult with those kind of restrictions. Platinum is the only exception, it has a pretty well balanced level curve, but I just don't like the region. Aside from the stretch of the game starting at the snow routes and up through mt coronet, I find Sinnoh to be kind of bland. Still better than the suffocating linearity of the gen 6+ games though.

Worst of what I've played is XY--no challenge, lots of handholding, barely any room to explore the world, garbage story that constantly interrupts you. Haven't played swsh.

I picked up my Pokemon Black save recently, it's a save I started in 2011 just after I got my 3DS and I ended up dropping it around 4 gyms in because I didn't really like playing DS games on that system. But I'm playing it on a DSi XL right now and damn I am really enjoying it. Game looks gorgeous too and has fantastic music.

edit:

checked out eBay for a copy of Black/White 2 after seeing some of the praise in here and damn this game is expensive as hell

Best - HeartGold/SoulSilver. So much content, two regions, tons of post-game content, expanded even from Crystal. HG/SS is the culimination of everything good about Pokemon and the absolute peak of the series.
Worst - X/Y. Just a trainwreck. Forgettable characters, horrible writing, horrible pacing, terrible Pokemon designs, barely any postgame content. Worst of the series by far.

RGBYFRLGPE- Light on story but endlessly replayable. My personal favorite.
GSCHGSS- Has a little more story but certain decisions made surrounding a split path definitely hurt it in the long run. Honestly think SW99 was better balanced (outside of Falkner).
RSEORAS- The beginning of the Cult Unearths a God plotline, which began to overstay its welcome for about a decade. Overabundance of Sea Routes ultimately added to the tedium in the later parts of the game but imo, the first 5 badges section of Hoenn is the most fun in the series.
DPt- Some may enjoy the slow pacing of this game but honestly there's a lot of fluff they could have and should have cut down on. One of two games in the series where I get frustrated at how slow it is.
BW2- Has very good characters but maybe not as great a story as some would say, upon retrospect. Both region and regional dexes are good and they're games I enjoy replaying.
XY- Too many characters that could have been merged, Flare plot is very poorly done and is thrown at you in a very short timespan towards the 75% mark. Region and regional dexes are underrated, imo, once you get past the whole "Route 1 is a line" fact there's some pretty well-designed routes. The game I have the highest amount of time in.
USM- They took the story criticisms to heart and ended up including too much plot and characterization which makes the games very hard to replay and speedrun (A Button Mashing Simulator). Other than that, they were fine, Ultra fixed some weird decisions with evolutions at least.
SwShAC- I feel a certain twist was unnecessary and there was the opposite problem of DPt where some areas were too short, but I liked their attempts to better blend the Amie mode into the actual game alongside the increased availability of nearly every Pokemon in the regional dex. I'll wait until I can have a run that goes through the DLC during the game to give my final feelings on it but I enjoyed it.

Played every gen but 7. I would say my two favorite games in the series are HeartGold/SoulSilver and Black/White 2. Complete games from top to bottom, great monsters, locations, music. I'll always have a soft spot for Gen 3 as well.

Yeah. x.x I ended up shelling out like $60 on HeartGold earlier this year and apparently that was a steal. BW2 is apparently even worse.
I really feel like I should've got White 2 when it was regularly being sold for under £20 lol, but I held off because I never finished the original. I got to wherever you catch Litwick in that tower, then got focused on shiny hunting one.

Best: I'd give it to the Sinnoh games or Emerald, though nostalgia may well be coloring my opinions there.

Worst: Sw/Sh. The campaign was honestly my biggest problem with the game. Just really weak overall. Besides the hilariously incoherent villain plot, there was really nothing interesting going on throughout.

How have we not had Pokemon World of Pokemon Megamix with all of the national dex and all of the regions so far?

Pretty much. Sooo good.

Strongest: Gen 3 actually. I was one of the people who LOVED Hoenn. Thought it had the best starters, music, and I loved diving. TA and TM were dumb, but the lead up to the legendaries was excellent.

Weakest: Gen 8. SwSh are some of the worst RPGS I've played period and the fact every town took a step back from things to do compared to those in previous gens is an embarrassment. Plus I hated Hop from the start, Yell are stupid, ugh.

Black 2, there's a hard mode that has effort put into it.

Really?!?

I had no idea there was a Pokémon with a hard mode. I've tried several Pokémon games but always get bored after 10 hours. I think I would stick with them if there was a hard mode.

I tried the Temtem early access on PC and actually enjoyed it more than any Pokémon game because it was challenging. Several fights I escaped by the skin of my teeth. Gonna look up Pokémon Black's hard mode...

Best:
Generation 3: Emerald
Generation 4: Platinum and HGSS
Generation 5: All of them
Worst:
Generation 6: X&Y
Generation 8: Sword and Shield

Anyone disagree?

Strictly single player campaign? Black and White have the best story (or at least the closest thing to a decent story). B2/W2 have Hard Mode. Easy picks there. Neither of them are my favorite, but both pretty good.

The DS era is easily the peak of anything pokemon OP. HG/SS, Platinum, B/W 1/2 are all amazing. Emerald follows after that, then it just slowly becomes more disappointing.

I grew up with gen 2 so HG/SS are my favorites, though I really loved going through Black 2 and Emerald as well.

Of the games I've played X was by far the worst. I enjoyed Ultra Sun, but X was just awful in many regards.

S/M, Sw/Sh tied worst. B/W/BW2 the best.
No, X/Y was the worst by a mile. Everything was way too easy and didn't have a post-game with the smallest selection of new Pokémon . I personally enjoyed SM and SS much more than RSE, DPPt, and BW(2). BW has the best story and BW2 had a respectable Hard mode but that's about it. SM was a breath of fresh air and had some really great Pokémon designs. SS being on full screen automatically makes it the best in my eyes, unlike Let's Go which required motion controls and simplified battle mechanics.

BW and BW2 are the only games in the series I'd recommend to someone who likes JRPGs but has little to no investment in Pokémon. They're just great games overall, and the peak for me as someone who mostly plays them as a single-player experience.

As far as my least favourite, it's Sword & Shield. I enjoyed XY and SM a lot more by comparison.

Best : BW 2, Platinum, HG/SS
Worst : X/Y hands down.

You know what, seeing how gamefreak is literally unable to make ambitious games, i would rather have the top view of old games back but keep the actual battle view. I really find that view charming and sure i would love an ambitious 3D game where u can rotate the camera etc but it's just not gonna happen properly with GF. They had a lot of time with Sw/Sh and it still ended up being just.. average, even tho it got helped by being the first mainline game on a home console.

And knowing Gen 4 remakes are probably next, i know they are going to screw it up. I have no faith left.

Pokemon Emerald will always have a place in my heart that no other Pokemon game can fill. I remember playing it obsessively during my summer off in 2005. It blew my mind once I beat the game and traveled to the battle frontier. That was one of the most fun post game experiences I've had playing a Pokemon game.

HGSS/BW2 take the prize.
Honestly, even if it's a little too much linear, I love what they did with Unova.

That was a damn good run.

This is basically where I am, though I never cared for Sinnoh much at all (granted, I never played Platinum).

Despite some improvements in some areas (like finally upgrading to 3D), there's also a strong case to be made that there have been declines in terms of story and region.

I do have a bit of a soft spot for Alola. I enjoyed the approach of exploring a region without gyms that was only just establishing its Pokémon league. The ultra beasts were zany in a fun way, IMO, and I also appreciated the (admittedly pretty obvious) spin on the game's evil team.

Of the ones I've played and can remember. I'd say ORAS is by far my favorite in almost every imaginable way. I don't care about end game content beyond evolving my Pokemon and leveling them, so no issues there. I've always enjoyed the story to that game as well.

Least would be Sun and Moon. By the halfway point I just wanted it to be over. The story failed to grab me, I cared little for Lily or Hau, and the world was lackluster.

I'd say all of the DS games were great with their own strengths and weaknesses. 3ds games were the beginning of the end for me. Stuffs been crap once they went to 3d

Gen 4's storylines were above anything else. Then when Gen 6 came everything went downhill.

As it's been said, the DS games are the peak of the campaign experience for Pokemon, especially Platinum and Black/White 2. Long campaigns, robust regions, healthy postgame, and in the case of BW2, hard mode.

Worst is easily Sword/Shield. Just completely barebones in level design and very little meaningful obstacles or challenge. XY gets a dishonorable mention but comes out looking a lot better after SWSH.
