Well, it's been a couple weeks since Nioh 2 hit. I notice that quite a few people around here are finishing it up or closing in on it. It's been interesting to check in on the discourse and see the range of opinion on all the new bosses, systems and tweaks that have come along with it. Some seem to love the increased variety; others seemed mixed, or feel the game is too bloated.

To the people who have played both: which did you prefer? And why do you prefer it?

Two is a really fun upgrade over the first title. Both still amazing though and will gladly replay anytime.

I love Nioh 2's combat. I don't always lean hard on Yokai abilities but it's nice that they're there.

2 offers two more weapons, cursed/blessed weaponry, Yokai skills, a lot of nice QoL changes (like the reforging system), the ability to create your own character, and (at least in my opinion) a more enjoyable story with a much more kickass final boss.

Pretty much the only thing I miss from the original is the Wind/Earth elements (especially the Level 2 Wind spell), but Bless/Curse are more than worthy replacements.

And this is before the upcoming DLC will add even more content.

2 has better gameplay thanks to the addition of Yokai skills and burst countering, plus there's slightly better variation in locations and enemies.

Not to mention, the gear is a lot better as well and I say this despite being really happy with the gear in the first game.

2 easily. Now there's actual enemies.

Feels easier because of yokai burst, but honestly that isn't really much of a lose.

I liked 2 a lot more than 1, and I really liked 1.

I'm probably just better at Souls games now, but I was really happy that I was able to beat all the main mission and sub mission without much trouble (besides one boss). There are still some missions in the original that I haven't been able to beat yet.

I absolutely love the risk/reward feeling of the burst counter and the Yokai skills are great.

The only downside I had with 2 was that Yokai shift didn't seem that good (at least for my build). The gauge took too long to fill up and then transformation wouldn't last long either. I mostly used it to safely get the last few hits in on a boss. That said I thought living weapon in the first game was absolutely busted so I do appreciate the change.

Is nioh 2 like waaaay harder than nioh 1? Every video of it that I see has people getting fucking wrecked lol

No, because you have far more tools this time (burst counter for example) and if you really get stuck, you can summon a live player or even an NPC companion instantly. Makes the game so much more accessible for us not-so-strong players.

Platinumed both on PS4 and I think Nioh 2 is a vastly superior game.

The new player on-boarding is even rougher than it was the first time around (unless, of course, you played Nioh 1, in which, you'll have a much easier time picking up where you left off and learning the new stuff), and the story is just as poorly told as ever. The difficulty tuning is also pretty whack. Trash mobs hit harder than any of the bosses in this game, making the journey to getting to the bosses generally more difficult than that of Nioh 1, but Nioh 2's bosses are generally way easier than Nioh 1's. But those are the only real knocks I have against the game.

In every other possible sense, the game is anything from a modest to a tremendous improvement over the original. Especially combat, enemy variety, encounter design, and level design. In Nioh 1, you felt the Dark Souls inspirations for the overall stage design for roughly the first half of the game, and then it just falls away in favor for simpler and more linear, less interesting stages. Nioh 2's stages largely get better, or at the very least, a few of the very best are saved for the end.

Nioh 2 also leans more heavily into the fantastical elements, which also lets them do more interesting things with stage design. Combat systems are familiar but with just enough new mechanics and quality of life improvements layered on top to make going back to Nioh 1 more difficult. You have such a lovely expanded toolset in this game. Leveling and point distribution are also handled better. Difficulty curve is perhaps a bit smoother. Platinum is easier and more reasonable.

It's just a more fun game, top to bottom. And I loved both a lot.

Absolutely love 2, enjoyed 1 but bounced off it after a handful of hours. I think the Yokai abilities and less reliance on living weapons is far more enjoyable. I also greatly enjoy using a custom character vs being forced to play as William.

I played both of them back to back and prefer 2, just expands and changes things in a good way.

2 is kind of just a better version of 1 in most cases I feel like. I know the story in these games doesn't matter that much but I was a bit disappointed in how quickly Nobunaga's era was finished. Unless I somehow missed it, I don't think we did the battle of Nagashino which is crazy to me. The lack of younger a Yukimura and Shingen was also sorely missed. I also expected better from a Honnoji stage, it was disappointing. Also, unless I missed it somehow I don't think we went through
Matsunaga Hisahide's multiple betrayals either. I wasn't a big fan of Hideyoshi's portrayal throughout the later half of the game at all, just wasn't doing it for me. Keiji Maeda
was lame too.

Nioh 1 on the other hand, I felt I enjoyed its story, characters and their portrayals a lot more.

How difficult is Nioh 2 to plat?

On par with, like, Bloodborne chalice dungeons?

Edited to clarify Nioh 2, not 1
Nah, way easier. It's grindy doing all the weapon and skill proficiency, but not hard.

I guess they're kind of the same. I managed to like the levels of 2 even less than 1, thought the story was one of the worst I've gone through in a game, and that the bosses were overall weaker, but at least it had slightly more enemy variety. Definitely didn't improve on anything I wanted it to in any meaningful way.

Both... ~7ish, fast food kind of experiences.

Nioh 2 is very good, but I will probably remember Nioh 1 more. The story and characters of the first game were much more interesting, it felt like a classic samurai story with monsters sparkled in. In comparison Nioh 2 leans too much towards fantasy and the plot is very disjointed due to all the timeskips - not to menton the silent protagonist.

In terms of gameplay, erogonomy, level design and overall playability there is no question that Nioh 2 is an improvement and makes the first game dated in comparison. My only gripe is with the difficulty balancing. Nioh 1 was consistently difficult so when I beat it (and platiniumed it) I felt like I was on the top of the world. The first few chapters of Nioh 2 are ridiculously hard with every mob being able to one-shot you, which made the progression very frustrating (no wonder Team Ninja nerfed them not only once but twice). However the latter half of the game is a complete joke.

tl;dr : Nioh 2 is the better game overall, but Nioh 1 is more memorable.

For me, Nioh 1 is a great game with a meh story. Nioh 2 is a slightly better than great game with a trash-garbage story. Because I don't really care about story, I prefer Nioh 2, but boy o boy is that story bad AND poorly told.

Just finished the main story of 2 yesterday. Vastly prefer it to the original. The enemy variety fixes a huge issue the first game had, and the burst counters are a blast. The new way you gain skill points for the tree is lovely as well.

I thought the story of 1 was one of the worst-told stories I had ever seen in a game. I couldn't follow anything or remember most characters. How is 2 even worse? lol

Nioh 1 has lot more to do than Nioh 2, but the DLC will surely change that.

But Nioh 2 definitly has the way worse enemy placements where I always shit myself (worse than horror games) and I did hate that soo much.... just cheap and stupid.

Also Nioh has the better story than Nioh 2.

I'm not far into N2 and played through N1 twice, so make of this what you will.

N2 is basically N1 with improvements/additions in gameplay. It's clear why this game got made that quickly, but I'm not hating that. It just feels like a huge expansion tbh.

While N1's story is certainly ripe with clichés and predictable, I was at least somewhat entertained by it. I really loved the characters and their spirits. It felt very anime (JoJo-esque). I hate silent protags that get a sidekick who does all the talking, so I don't like that aspect of N2 at all.

I don't see what 1 does better than 2, unless you really care about story in a game like this, and even still..
2 just do everything gameplay wise better. Better mechanics, enemies, levels, weapons, bosses...

Unfortunately the last beta for Nioh 2 really turned me off. The first Nioh was a great game and felt mostly fair in all its combat encounters. The area they had you play in the beta felt way too punishing and drained any desire I had to pick it up anytime soon.

Its so much worse. At least part 1, for how bad the story is, has a followable throughline.

You are a dude with a fairy named Bill.
Some other dude named Ed steals your fairy.
You need to find him and get your fairy back. Okay.
You go to Japan and do that while meeting random semi-historical figures.
You find ed and kill him, get your fairy back.

Simple.

In part 2, major spoilers:

You play as a silent protag
Some weird dude just decides you are pals after holding a rock to your head
You hang out with him for 30 years doing odd jobs for a king who dies off screen
Later he betrays you just a little so you betray him full on
He gets sad, so you come back and murder him
Then he comes back to life
Then he murders you
Then you come back to life
Then he gets married to a demon house
Then you murder his wife and then murder him again
Then you take a nap for like 20 years
Then your weird pal who you killed twice wakes up and everything is swell again

Look up more or equip enemy sensor on your gear.

That area is pretty late-game. The difficulty curve in 2 is generally much better balanced with almost no wild spikes. I found it to be slightly harder than nioh 1 in theory, but in practice your character is so much stronger in nioh 2 that the game ends up easier.

I feel like both games basically expect you to understand the basic story of nobunaga and the surrounding people.

I loved playing through the first one when it came out on PS4, but I haven't had time to play Nioh 2 yet. Now I think I'll just wait for the inevitable PC version. Good to see people rating the sequel highly.

Nya sorry I don't really like games where I always have to look up. Endgame was the worst in this regard and it was annoying.

Gameplay wise 2 is better than one. I don't feel it's as bloated as some say it it is. Alps story wise I prefer 2 as I could somewhat follow what was happening.

Nioh 1s story is somehow both convoluted to the point I couldn't care anymore, but can also be summed up in one sentence in a Nioh 2 in - game biography...

If I haven't played either should I still play Nioh 1 or just jump right into 2?
