Just finished watching someone's lets play of 1,2,3,4 and got me in the Metal Gear mood.

MGS1 - Snake vs Rex, Grey Fox vs Rex, Liquid and Snake convo, Snake vs Liquid, Ending dialogues
MGS2 - AI Colonel, Raiden vs Rays, Everything right after the Rays, More AI Colonel, Raiden vs Solidus, Raiden and Snake convo
MGS3 - Snake vs Shagohod and Volgin, Snake and Boss convo, Snake vs Boss, Snake and Ocelot Duel, EVA outro, Big Boss salute
MGS4 - Microwave, Snake vs Ocelot, final cutscenes, Debriefing with Big Boss
MGS5 - Quiets' leave, The Truth.

For me, MGS2 always gets me. It still blows my mind every time I watch it all. The final codec with the AI is....

It's gotta be 2 the entire meta breakdown of Raiden basically representing the player was pretty insane.

The prophetic exchange between Raiden and the Colonel...

Undeniably 2. And no the Ocelot vs. Old Snake fight doesn't make 4's better.

MGS3 and it's not even close.

That fucking ending with the Boss. That fucking ending. Nothing rivals it in any game, let alone another MGS game.

The best ending was secretly Peace Walker's ending. This should've been the storyline for MGSV in all honesty.

MGS2's ending feels more and more relevant as the years go by. It lacks the emotional appeal of MGS3 (which I like better than 2 overall), but it just feels so visionary to me.

MGS2, not just because of its prophetic nature but also because I genuinely thought it was the most emotional as well, even more than MGS3. Jack coming to terms with his identity and his newfound passion for life was honestly heartwarming.

Showdown with The Boss + shit that made sense and not too absurd levels of plot twists. What a thrill.

As long as MGS4 doesn't win. I don't care which game gets the most votes on that poll.
Also my personal choice was MGS2. I really like the Raiden and Snake dialog there.

I know inequalities aren't especially beloved here but I'm going to begin with one anyway. First, however, I want to note that I will be ranking them based on overall endgame sequences and then by endings alone. This is important to separate because Knowledge includes final chapter content as well as epilogues. For me, that changes things considerably.

From the perspective of endgame:
MGS4 > MGS2 > MGS3 > MGS1 > MGS5.

From the perspective of epilogue:
MGS3 > MGS4 > MGS1 Otacon Ending > MGS2 > MGS1 Meryl Ending > MGS5.

So what changes?

MGS4's fifth and final "act", as the game and strategy guide refer to it, is nothing short of a masterpiece. Sure, it revels in the game's most notoriously incredulous aspects, such as Meryl and Johnny having some kind of Pirates of the Caribbean 3 standoff. But it all comes together remarkably well, and there is nothing else in gaming quite like Snake's slow crawl through the microwave with "Love Theme" playing in the background and Kojima's pitch-perfect cuts to other sections of Outer Haven and beyond. It is fucking unparalleled. MGS2 is twist after twist after twist after prophetic dialogue after prophetic dialogue after prophetic dialogue, sliced up by some of the best boss fights in the franchise. MGS3 has the absolutely sublime cheese with Volgin and it washes it all down with a one-on-one Big Boss versus The Boss duel that is one for the ages. MGS1 is still good, but I honestly don't think it holds a candle to any of that. And I say that as someone who would still cite that endgame as one of the best in the medium. MGS5... is MGS5.

Now for the endings themselves. MGS3 is my favorite ending in gaming. It's powerful, it's sweeping, it sets up Big Boss' downfall in a way that, tragically, none of his follow-up games -- the ones that are supposed to push him farther and farther from the light -- ever rival. Harry Gregson-Williams' best song ever composed swells into crescendo at just the right moments, too, and "Way to Fall" is the perfect end credits theme to match the actual tears I felt upon my 16-year-old cheeks when that game first came out. (Do I still cry? Yes, yes I do.) MGS4's epilogue is criticized for being entirely too long, and much like its endgame, occasionally doubling down on the game's more infamous plot and character beats. And, I mean, fair. But it also has some of the best moments in the series. "Snake... had a hard life." Otacon's last on-screen words in the timeline. And they are masterfully delivered, and maybe I cry a little bit there as well. Is the Snake and Big Boss graveyard scene too long? No. I don't think it is. Next up is the MGS1 ending that ain't canon, and that's kind of a shame. "Hal, huh? I'm Dave." That's a good line right there. MGS1's canon ending just feels like mediocre cheese by comparison. MGS2's is better than that, but "This... is for your ears only." That's such a dull clanker of an attempt at romantic dialogue, capping off a Raiden/Rose relationship that was pretty damn bad the whole way through. MGS5.. is MGS5.

MGS1. It's not fucking confusing or drawn out. It has one fucking ending, not 4 or 5 one after the other like some of the other games in the series. It's also the most self contained.

Difficult to say, because even though I only played up to MGS3, the endings of both were the things I liked the most about them by far.

I think I'll go with MGS2... the sheer prophetic nature of the Colonel's tirade is one of those special moments.

MGS3's last boss is peak atmosphere and emotionally far and away the best part of the franchise, but I think MGS2 distinguishes itself more.

Awesome write up. I defienetely agree thatthe non-canon MGS1 ending is better lol. And yeah, MGS4 ending was pretty damn good. It gets bashed to much imo.

I'll like to try to see someone try to convince us why V would be the best ending.
Saddest I could argue. I've never cried as much as when I realized how disappointing of a game MGSV was.

There are people who think the "2 Big Boss's" twist is the most brilliant one of the series. But the final mission, and Act 2 in general has so much bullshit with levels being recycled, including the final level having no fighting at all/ being a copy of hte opening level.

Most interesting: MGS2

Most emotional: MGS3

Most satisfying: MGS4

If I had to pick one overall, it would probably be MGS3. That ending had a massive impact on my life.

It was sort of cool until you realized that it ultimately changed little in the grand scheme of things and the game ends once the twist is revealed.

Honestly the most disappointing thing in gaming for me. Worst way to end the MGS series.

The first PS1 game with Meryl ending.

Even with polygon graphics, it's beautiful along with "The Best Is Yet To Come" track + music.

MGS3 for me (to be fair I haven't played MGS2 since like, 8-9 years?).
I remember reading some time ago on twitter that this ending makes every game chronologically placed between MGS3 and MG1 feel unnecessary plot-wise, as you already understand what were Big Boss motivations, and I agree.

Man, the final fight with The Boss is so amazing, but the fight with Liquid Ocelot is legendary as well.

I think overall I will go with MGS4 because it hit me a bit more, but it's so so close.

I think 3 is the easy answer. 4 gets my vote though, the credits pause got an audible grasp from me.

The thing I love about MGS 1 ending is how successfully it feels like a single crazy night. I absolutely adore media that can pull off that feeling.

I voted for 3 but I can point out the inaccurate presentation of 5 in the OP to make it a little more fair:

MGS1 - Snake vs Rex, Grey Fox vs Rex, Liquid and Snake convo, Snake vs Liquid, Ending dialogues
MGS2 - AI Colonel, Raiden vs Rays, Everything right after the Rays, More AI Colonel, Raiden vs Solidus, Raiden and Snake convo
MGS3 - Snake vs Shagohod and Volgin, Snake and Boss convo, Snake vs Boss, Snake and Ocelot Duel, EVA outro, Big Boss salute
MGS4 - Microwave, Snake vs Ocelot, final cutscenes, Debriefing with Big Boss
MGS5 - Quiets' leave, The Truth.
Forgot to list:
Venom vs Sahelanthropus, Ending with Skullface, Hueys Exhile, Quarantine Ending.

I'd put 5 at number 2 best ending for me. Also no PW? PW had awesome ending(s)

3 has the best ending, but 2 has the more memorable ending section if that makes sense. Everything starting from naked Raiden all the way through the confrontation with Solidus is absolute peak MGS to me. Meanwhile 3 has some meandering before The Boss fight, but it ends on an emotional high in what is the single most memorable scene in the franchise.
