I've always loved soundtracks that take one theme and really run with it and SMW is the best example of that approach. I think it goes a long way towards making a memorable experience and Sonic 1's music never made as distinct an impression on me.

While we're plugging Sonic tunes, I feel obliged to stan for the oft overlooked and secretly best song, the multiplayer version of Casino Night Zone.

SMW has a couple of great tracks but they're repeated throughout the game. Each of Sonic's zones has distinct and memorable music. Green Hill, Marble, Spring Yard, Labyrinth, Starlight, and Scrap brain...all iconic tunes.

But sometimes Ninten-do

Do it. Make this thread.
And lose my thread making privileges for trolling?! I think not!

Wait, my threads die after 5 posts because I bloat the OP, maybe this is the hot take style thread I need to return to the promised land of a second page.

I love Super Mario World soundtrack, but I gotta go with Sonic 1, just because of the variety of melodies...

though the Castle Theme in SMW ranks above most Sonic 1 tunes

I really can't decide, Sonic 1 with spin dash and drop dash ads a lot to the gameplay and makes the levels flow better
So I can't decide really lol

It was really difficult for me to pick a favorite. I mulled it over for a good 10 minutes. Both have great music, if you ask me.

SMW's music perfectly matches its appearance. There's quite a bit of it. It's upbeat and catchy. It sounds great, and I'll always love how the drums pop in when you hop aboard a Yoshi.

Sonic 1's music happened a couple of years into the Genesis' life, and the sound designers really knew how to make those synths pop by then. It sounds fantastic.

In the end, I settled on SMW as my favorite, because as good as Sonic 1's music is, its loops are definitely shorter...so it can get a bit repetitive by the time you're deep into Act 3.

Sonic.

Think Cell (Super Perfect) for Sonic vs Goku (Super Saiyan 1 after training in time chamber) for mario.

Scrap Brain is great. Really communicates the tension of entering the final Zone (well, besides Final Zone).

i agree with those of y'all saying sonic 1 has the weakest soundtrack of the genesis games but like, it's still better than smw. sonic 2 and especially sonic 3 & knuckles are just so much better that the comparison isn't even worth making. s3k is straight up among the GOATs

I think it would be more interesting to compare Sonic to other 2D sidescrollers that have well-regarded and diverse OSTs, like Mega Man X or Donkey Kong Country.

Despite Sonic 1 having arguably the weakest music of the Mega Drive games it's still better than SMW and it isn't even close. Sonic 2 or 3&K and it would be an absolute landslide.

How is this not a total blowout in favor of Sonic? SMW is the better game, but this isn't even close.

My boy Sonic is winning here, I see. How about some Sonic 2 8-bit love?

Have some Toot Toot Sonic Warrior.

I kinda like the funky groove of this and Aqua Lake Zone.

And the chill ending theme.

I mean, as a series? Absolutely no contest. No other series really has the range and depth of Sonic games. Sonic music spans everything from blue grass to rap to house music to hard rock to pop to jazz to industrial to emo to orchestral music and so forth. And it has really, really good songs in all those genres.

Like, what other series has this range:

The arranged OST of Super Mario World is one of my favorite video game albums of all time. It's a must-listen, nowadays it's normal for a lot of games to get arrangements and remix albums but this was released back in 1991. It's downright fascinating to see how the composers imagined those old tracks were to sound like with band and jazz arrangements.

It's ALWAYS Sonic. Say what you want about the games, Sonic music is consistently incredible, even taking into account those cheesy vocal tracks

Just keeps going and going. Sonic has great music in EVERY genre. It's musical depth is insane.

Sonic has this on lock. lol

I can hear some of the tracks in my head right now and I haven't listened to the OST in years.

I can't decide.

And I am pretty fresh on this. I have been replaying these games recently and Mario World is much better than I remembered it and Sonic is much worse than I remembered it. I was really excited for Sonic and the game just felt more exciting than Mario at the time, which seemed like a natural upgrade to Mario3. But man Sonic is just not as fun for me now and Mario World seems like a work of art.

The one thing Sonic at least as good, if not better, is the music. Everything else (controls, graphics, gameplay, pants, etc) I am heavily in favor of SMW.
