I don't think any 8 bit games hold up well but SMB 3 is at least semi playable. Even if the All Stars version is much better.

The best game of all times happens to be 8-bit but I understand the inclusion of bubble bobble in the poll would have made the thread pointless.

Shovel Knight

On that list, I voted for Tetris, but I'd probably say that the original Legend of Zelda was pretty legit too.

Off the top of my head, Megaman 2/3, Megaman V (GB), Links Awakening and SMB3 are probably the handful I go back to the most.

Of those I'd give it to Links Awakening.

It's Dragon Quest IV for me with Super Mario Bros 3 as a close second.
Special mention for Phantasy Star (SMS) and Link's Awakening (GB) which are the top games on their respective consoles.

Super Mario Bros. 3 is better than 90% of games released today.

Pokemon GSC comes close though.

I'm honestly kind of shocked that Mario Bros. 3 is leading by so much. I think it's a great game, but it's easily eclipsed by other 8 bit games that have slightly more depth.

My vote goes to Pokemon Crystal. Honorable mention to Kirby's Adventure and Metal Gear.

Mario 3 all day, everyday.

Honorable mention goes to Ninja Gaiden II, probably my favourite soundtrack of the 8bit generation!

It's hard to argue against Super Mario Bros 3. One of the greatest video games ever considering how old it is and how well it still holds up. That's a true test of greatness.
